Re: Hello from Toronto / Relocating to New Brunswick

Thanks for the welcomes. I am gradually eating my way through the site. I go frequently to The Oil Drum, but wouldn't dare post there, though I find the information fascinating.

I will definitely be going through "Planning for the Future".

I am from Ottawa originally, but my partner is from New Brunswick which is one of the reasons we bought land there. We did not buy near the coast, just to be safe, and because he grew up inland and so is more used to the interior. Also, coastal land, even in New Brunswick, is more expensive.

We paid $25,000 for 32 acres of rolling farmland, about 20 minutes out of Moncton. The land is about half wooded / half field. There are at least two springs on it, and it borders a very small stream. The springs are active year-round, we found them working in winter and they were burbling away last week as well, so we are feeling good about our water supply, though the quality is untested as yet.

Our land is nothing exceptional to look at, to be honest, but it is on a fairly quiet sideroad which was important for me. My partner has a degree from an agricultural college (while I am city born and bred) so I am hoping that plays in our favour.

Welcome, that is a beautiful area, especially during apple blossom season and October.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('elisse37', 'B')TW, your dog looks cool! What breed is it?

I guess you are referring to my avatar.
Sorry, don't know that. It is from a photo I found on the web. Been rotating a few different dogs as my avatar for some weeks now.

And regarding you comments, yes there is always a risk people buy stuff they don't need just for the sake of a bargain.
Similarly quite a lot of food is thrown away as it got old/bad before finished. That is why I will also be quite selective if I buy bulk.

Glad you finally made it. I was worried.

Massive Human Dieoff must occur as a result of Peak Oil. Many more than half will die. It will occur everywhere, including where you live. If you fail to recognize this, then your odds of living move toward the "going to die" group.

vtsnowedin says hello

Postby vtsnowedin » Sat 02 Aug 2008, 16:39:09

 I was rude enough to not make my first post hear so I apologize to anyone who is annoyed by that.
I found peak oil by googling algae oil after seeing a picture in Time Mag of a greenhouse growing algae in vertical plastic bags claiming to be a viable alternative to oil.
I must say this is a very interesting site with a wide range of viewpoints and much to consider.
As to myself. I am an retired redneck that is about to become an empty nester. I grew up on the place I now own and my father farmed it with horse power only. In the 60s peace corp trainees were sent to our farm to learn which end of a cow the milk comes from before they went off to Africa to solve the worlds problems. I am a hunter, a hand loader, a wood burner and believe that a wise Vermonter lives more by lack of expense then from income. I hope to have many useful and entertaining conversations with many of you here.

Howdy vt,

You sound like you have a lot of great experience. I'm sure you'll
enjoy the endless forums and sharing with us. Welcome!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('vtsnowedin', '.')..so I apologize to anyone who is annoyed by that.
Spoken like a true gentleman.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('vtsnowedin', 'I') was rude enough to not make my first post hear...
Come to think of it, I don't think I ever made a post introducing myself... :-D

I think you have much to teach us here. Mind if I borrow this quote for my signature line for awhile?

Welcome, this is really a place with something for everyone. :-D
What brought you here? What are some of your interests?

By the way, I think a mod will move this thread to the welcome section,
but no big deal...

 Its not mine!! I stole it. Some book of Vermont humor written by a Dartmouth proffessor that lived on the Vermont side of the river. It is old enough to be public domain but use at your own peril.

Hello Hello

Postby ZebraDog » Sun 03 Aug 2008, 14:28:28

I've been lurking for a while and figured now was as good as any a time to introduce myself. Originally from North Dakota, now an Art Student in Minnesota looking for a way out with only a year left of school. Father is working on the Bakken deposit which is where I'm looking to go before/after I graduate. (Still trying to decide if this art degree is worth it.) I'm hopeful that I'll pick up something here worth more than just gloom and doom.

Welcome :)

What kind of art do you do? My daughter does pencil and graphic art. She's a senior in HS at the moment and trying to decide whether art school would be worth it.
