Postby Mominator » Thu 26 Jun 2008, 18:23:22

I just wanted to introduce myself. I have only just recently learned about peak oil and I have been insatiably reading about it.

I've got loads of questions--especially about the economic issues of it all and how the real estate market is being affected currently. If anyone has any golden old threads to recomend I'd really appreciate it.
There's SO much here I don't really know where to start and I don't want to start new conversations asking redundant (stupid)questions.

I'm a homemaking mom to two little boys. I am 6 credits away from finishing my BS in Anthropology. Our family is currently downsizing our life in anticipation of possible job losses of the future.

Welcome.
Massive Human Dieoff must occur as a result of Peak Oil. Many more than half will die. It will occur everywhere, including where you live. If you fail to recognize this, then your odds of living move toward the "going to die" group.

Welcome! This is an interesting place; Don't try to absorb all of it in one sitting! It can be very overwhelming. When I first started, I would check the posts posted since my last visit. Then, as I began to understand a bit more, I would pick a forum and go through its thread titles, and start reading with the topics I understood.
Then, read from there. When you wish to pick a certain topic, pick the search option (The "How to get around this site" is quite helpful.)

Welcome, Em! Check out the "How to get around this site" thread, then have at it! Cur is right, read as much as you can when you can. Although humanity is (IMHO) sliding down the other side, it is not going to happen in the next day or two, so you have time to assess your personal situation.
Enjoy yourself!

Welcome, Buggy!
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('wisconsin_cur', 'O')h and if you think you are from a nut house... just wait until you spend some time around here. You just left the nut house and entered the big box nut super-store.

OH boy, is Cur right!

From a doomer's perspective:

Best case scenario = total economic meltdown will be delayed until 2010 to 2012.

Worst case scenario = total global meltdown of financial markets this fall (roughly Sept/Oct 2008).

Hi Elisse we're in SE QLD. Did you kill one of your chooks yet? We've got problems with this. we're having 5 but I think you'll really be able if you have like 20 or so. And we have kids and for them they're pets which lay eggs. Do you have a rooster?
I myself would like to buy an acreage, but my husbands work is nothing for rural areas.

Being an anthropologist I am sure you relize that all civilizations eventually burn themselves out one way or another. Peak Oil will be our downfall. As a society we have refused to accept the consequences of the end of the cheap oil era.

ferretlover-- I need to take your advice and get away from the site for the night. It is SO much to absorb.

Impervious-
LOL, certainly :)
I'm finding that I'm experiencing an odd emotion with all this new knowledge. I'm having a bit of Kunsler-like "glee" at having front-row tickets as the ship is going down. It's like I've known deep down that this was going to happen and here it IS . . .

That being said I still am feeling urgency- in action. I need to change certain things quickly in order to feel "comfortable" in light of the new things I know.

I guess the objective scientist in me is sitting back with a bag of popcorn while the child-scout in me is trying to figure out the true meaning of the word "preparedness". Fun stuff. I'm an optimist, if you can't tell.

sigh.

I'm here for the long haul. Or as long as the internet is up and I can afford to be on it ;)

Hi alokin,

We have only conducted "mercy killings" so far for sick chooks that we couldn't make better with TLC and medical potions. I agree with you that the more chooks you have the easier it would be to eat them, i have considered having egg layers as "pets" and others as broilers? What do you think? We have no roosters yet because technically we are not allowed, but I have been considering getting one because they are only about $5, keeping him for a few weeks to "do his thing" and make chicks, then.... the BBQ...... I feel a bit mean, but if we started with that intention, then he gets a good life (albeit short) and we get some broilers...

Hello

Postby Scenius » Fri 27 Jun 2008, 11:33:41

Long-time lurker for news and information about the oil scene. I like this site except that I wish it were a place you could pick up stock tips and things like that. The "Trader's Corner" thread seems more like a running commentary on macro-econ.

I think it's interesting that T. Boone Pickens is going to be starting up the US' largest wind farm using GE turbines. That got me interested in wind stocks but I found that there were few pure plays in wind.

Seems like there are a number of small wind developers who are building their total MW projects and who look to one day being bought out by big utilities. But is that the most profitable niche in the wind?

Welcome Scenius,

I don't think wind power generation companies are a place to speculate. Wind power projects typically have very dependable revenue that they have contracted to supply at a set price for many years in the future. Think f them as party of the utilities sector. You buy them for the dependability and immunity from recession. If you want to speculate on wind power the manufacturers are a better pace to look.

Certainly Boone Pickens must be thinking about profits. I see these wind farm start-ups as little future cash cows. Once they're up, they can generate power at 4 cents a kw/hr.

Hi Mom, welcome.

As has been said; take your time.

If you are looking for things to do try the Planning forum: http://www.peakoil.com/forum8.html

The index threads can help you find those golden threads...
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.
