Hi and welcome! Great having some Asian people here, to defeat a bit the US centric of the forum.

Hidari
Are there any Japanese writers who are speaking out about Peak Oil?
Do you happen to have one or two links to Japanese-language articles that explain the ramifications of Peak Oil, similar to Richard Heinberg or Matthew Simmons?
I have a Japanese spouse whom I would like to help unplug from the matrix.

Ah Hidari-san, so happy to hear! Please be welcome! Please pardon my jengrish.

Please remember, the letter "l" is pronounced "r" in jengrish. Be very careful, some words have different meaning if pronounced differently. Do not say "Election" in jengrish, not good word.

The official international business language for American and Japanese automotive businesses is: jengrish (80% English, 20% Japaneses, and usually 100% misinterpretation). Some know how to speak, many so confused.

So preease be happy to discuss good ideas from Japan. You have good conservation ideas, but some bad ideas. Every country has its good and bad.

muchi muchi....

[quote="Drifter"]Hello, Hidari. Welcome. :)

As you probably know, Japan imports about 60% of it's food and 99% of it's oil. It's probably a good thing that Japan's population is slowly decreasing.

Oh man, 60% of it's food and 99% of it's oil????

Get outta there before it is too late

Hi there!

Am new to the boards but have known about PO for some time now. As it appears that we are now finally slipping off the cliff towards the rocks of harsh reality, I've joined the boards to glean some ideas for how best to deal with this issue.

I tend to be something of an optimistic doomer. ie. I think that modern industrial society is on the way out and we're heading for a nasty die off in the population levels. On the other hand with decent planning surviving this myself shouldn't be too difficult given my skills and ultra low consumption lifestyle.

So see you on the forums!

Welcome Lowkey.

With the skills and lifestyle you mentioned, it sounds like you'll be able to make some great contributions to the Planning for the Future forum. I look forward to them!

Hi everyone! From Melbourne, Australia..

Unread postby elisse37 » Thu 26 Jun 2008, 08:41:15

A BIG hello to everyone here, I have been reading all your posts with much interest over the last 2 months, and felt it was time to introduce myself!
I live in Werribee, which is about 35 kms out of town, and a large percentage of the state's veggies are grown here, so we have good soil which I take advantage of to grow as much as I can (about 50-60% of our veg) plus we have 4 chooks, I am keen to grow chooks for meat as well as eggs and fertiliser but have not quite got that into practice yet. I do preserve a lot of our produce and excess I can get my hands on either cheap or free from close by.
I am really keen to rid myself of most car dependency and get away from the city, i would like to move to an acreage in north east VIC where I can grow almost everything I need and barter the rest.
Did anyone see that show on SBS last night about the guy in Tassie that makes the knives? It was awesome! link
I can't wait until next week's show about the bee keeper!

Hi and welcome.
We got quite an Aussie community here now. But if you have been snooping around here for a while you would have seen that already.
Hope youv'e seen the Aussie section also. Always interesting with some local topics.

I am in the Eastern suburbs by the way, but still ready and keen to hop on a good opportunity to move up north to the sunshine state.

Hi Lowkey,

I am also a new poster, but have been watching for awhile.

I am in Australia, and I think the effects of PO will be different here, but I think you make a valid point about modern industrial society being on the way out and population levels dropping. I myself have made a conscious decision not to have kids, and (obviously) the more people who do that, the slower the population will increase.

I also wonder how much of a difference is will make if we all switch to a low consumption lifestyle? And I mean really low, like grow everything you can, veg, fruit and meat, make your own power, save your own water and barter the rest...

Hi Micki,

Thanks for your welcoming words :-D

I have been checking out the Aussie community, it is really good to see such a large group of good, creative and free thinking people here! That's one of the reasons I felt I had to stop looking and start participating.

I am looking forward to meeting everyone!

Hi Hagakure,

Thanks :) i am working towards as much self sufficiency as possible, and at the moment I give way all the excess in the hop of helping others to convert, but when things get serious I will be hoarding (hopefully with others).

I would love to stay in Victoria when iI get my acreage, but I am worried about rainfall.. whereabouts are you?

I recently visited the Talbot Farmers Market and I was so inspired, I thought it was a great way of showing people what can be achieved.

My mum grew up in Stawell and my cousin lives in Maryborough bit I think it is too dry there. Practicality rules over sentimentality...

That's why I am thinking about moving to north west vic or NSW, more rain...

I'm located in the macedon ranges elisse. About 50 minutes from Melbourne.

I think there is a lot of scope for leadership with the changes people are going to have to make now. Setting a good example with self-sufficiency, local food exchange and renewed community values will really provide the greater community with a sense of direction during energy decent.

There is a growing pessimism in the people I know who aren't transitioning from their consumer ways. These people are going through the stages of grief, and they are going to need examples to follow when the finally land on acceptance.

Good on you for doing the things you're doing. It's a good start. :)

Yes, a chook is a chicken Troyboy1208.
