Dare to be abnormal

"When a story enchants us, we lose the sense of where we are; we are drawn into the story so thoroughly that we forget it is a story being told. This is, in Aristotle's phrase, "the suspension of disbelief."==Nigel Spivey, “How Art Made the World”

To understand is to grasp meaning; it is a suspension of disbelief. Understanding is a confluence of emotion and reason wherein I create that which is meaningful to me.

Know is see. Understand is grasp. These are rather common metaphors. Such metaphors help us comprehend.

Empathy is a technique for understanding. We can try to understand another person by creating a means whereby we can ‘walk a mile in her shoes’. We can create analogies of what the other person experiences as a means for us to ‘put on their shoes’.

An artist may paint in the manner of Picasso, or perhaps in the manner of a Rembrandt, or perhaps in the manner of a Monet. These different forms of painting represent different ways of seeing. They represent a personal understanding which provides us with a prism for seeing.

Mathematics is a way of seeing. Mathematics is the science of pattern. Imagine a very elaborate Persian rug. Imagine that you have only a small fragment of that rug. Mathematics offers a means whereby you might be able to construct the rest of that rug to look exactly like the original. Math can perhaps create a formula for the pattern in the rug such that you can, by following that math formula, exactly duplicate the pattern from which that rug was created.

Understanding is a stage of comprehension whereby a person can interject them self into the pattern through imagination. ‘Understanding is math’ because it helps the individual to ‘walk in the shoes’ of some other entity.

Understanding might correctly, in my opinion, be considered to be a personal paradigm. Knowledge is about truth but understanding is about meaning. Understanding is a means for placing the individual within the picture including the entity about which the individual wishes to become very familiar.

Understanding is a creative process that extends knowing. Understanding may or may not enhance the truth quality of comprehension. Picasso and Monet may paint the same object but have they captured the truth of that object?

Is truth anything beyond what humans have normalized (standardized)?

Does understanding aid or deter normalization?

Are you normal? Would you rather be normal than right?

To see what other miss........... Beyound words, that's the treat.

Once I had a little game
I liked to crawl back in my brain
I think you know the game I mean
I mean the game called 'go insane'
Now you should try this little game
Just close your eyes forget your name
Forget the world, forget the people
And we'll erect a different steeple.

This little game is fun to do.
Just close your eyes, i'm going too.
And I'm right here, no way to loose.
Release control, we're breaking through

I would rather laugh.

It also provide me a little bit of freedom here as well. As the village idiot it helps protect me from getting banned again.

I have been banned three times already, and this time around they have allowed me to stay. (probably because monte is no longer a mod)

Solzhenitsyn tells a similar story in The Gulag Archipelago. He told of when into the brutal oppressive camps came a cheerful crazy fool. He wasn't really 'crazy' he just acted crazy. And whereas Nurse Ratched wouldn't have any such behavior in her prison, the cruel Gulag guards were quite tolerant of the guy.

Group dynamics are so fascinating. You ever notice how some people, often the more talented ones, act a bit idiotically as a kind of psudo-scapegoat for those around them, just to make the others in the group comfortable?

Also, don't forget that the Open Forum is not "open" to the general public. Only registered insiders get to read the "crazy aunt in the attic" threads. I was wondering how does one get the most enviable title "village idiot", I guess that background explains it? Wear it with pride, bro!

Been banned enough times, usually merely for posting while extremely drunk and angry - so totally undeserved!  . But there was a case on a pagan forum with moderator team of exceptionally twisted fascist bureaucrat types where in my foolish pride I very consciously took a "valiant" stand against the pettiest and meanest moderator and called her shit out when she acted exceptionally bad and pompous, knowing perfectly well where that would lead - only to serve a "greater cause" of course  . And naturally after getting banned as expected, and not only once but twice, I felt like a total loser - that I am.

Or did you mean the mannerism of self-deprecating humour by Candidatus Clinton, served with a cackle, that for some curious reason is not quite doing the trick hoped for? 8O

Sometimes life is not simple, sometimes people overtime are forced into roles that allow them greater acceptance of their peers then what they would receive if they were to be who they really are.

Intelligence is not always a blessing, sometimes knowing and understanding a little more than those around you can you put you at odds, and it is easier to take on a role that you know does not fit you then to argue and end up in fights over something that someone else will not accept, in a battle that can not be won.

We have an interesting mix on this board, we have people who are exceptionally intelligent and we have those that only think they are, because they have accumulated over time more information about one particular topic than others. The vast majority of us though are just people trying to find our way in life and who have joined up to meet people who are just as terrified of a possible outcome.

I know some people on here think I really am an idiot, and I know a few who think I am just pretending in order to win acceptance. Either view is fine with me, because I don't care. I just want to laugh and joke around, because if I didn't, I am afraid I would cry. The world is not a nice place, and we are just tiny ants and the magnifying glass just seems to get closer everyday.

I am not going to debate the merits of intellectualism, nor, am I going to state that I know something of such great worth in order to win some form of appreciation for my contributions. Group dynamics are interesting, and I also enjoy watching how different arguments form and then coming to understand why the outcome could have only evolved in the way that it did. Why each of our personalities allow us to create a community where some must hide and others must eventually flourish. I enjoy it and I am sure that on some level I am a better man for having witnessed the growth of this community and whilst I have not been here since its inception, I did join before the boom and have seen what events lead to increased activity and what has caused the decline in posting that I have noticed as of this year.

I know that a vast majority of us are introverts and that in the real world we would have a hard time articulating the thoughts and feelings that we share here. Regardless of how you all feel about me or how I may feel about each of you, please understand that I believe that each one of you in some way or another has contributed something that has made this site as great as what it is. :) even Raphael

This is a good forum for a kid to hang around. I remember, as a lad, I'd hang out in coffee shops and listen to the ol folks chatter.

Another thing, don't let those peeps with a fancy education and sliver tongues talk down at ya.

Not me, I'm an extrovert. I could have been an Incan King who paraded his erect member to show just how extroverted he was. It was expected of him. Then of course, Spanish steel put an end to that. Ouch! Still, I'm glad you didn't leave like you said you would.

I would like to hear more introvert loser stories about attempts to share PO "thoughts and feelings" with the real life. My wife really hates those attempts I so poorly articulate, and I don't blame her (thogu I do) so I don't anymore even try, but anyone even more introvert loser would make my day.

Why is that? Who but an extrovert would call himself 'Penultimatemanstanding'? Only an extrovert likes to show off and be the center of attention. You ever notice this: extroverts don't envy introverts, but the converse isn't always so true. It is true that I enjoy solitude and don't feel lonely without company. So maybe I am an extroverted introvert, or maybe and introverted extrovert.
