Since when is Dr Lovelock a new age guru.
His gaia theory has nothing to do with spirituality.
Now why didn't I take the blue pill.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('EnemyCombatant', 'S')ince when is Dr Lovelock a new age guru.

That may be what he intended but you'll fing his books on sale at all new age shops and as I have the un/fortunate position to live in the new age capital of the world
http://www.isleofavalon.co.uk/
I can assure that every new ager worth their cystals uses Lovelock's Gaia as their bible as 'scientific' proof of their long held beliefs that the Earth is a living spirit which indeed is all about spirituality and nothing else.
Of course the new agers are a bit flummoxed now since Lovelock has become such a vehement support of the nuke industry.

anyway a quote
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')nce dismissed as New Age quackery, Lovelock's vision of a self-regulating Earth now underlies virtually all climate science.

which is from
Lovelock New Age Quack
as is
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')f you type "gaia" and "religion" into Google, you'll get 2,360,000 hits -- Wiccans, spiritual travelers, massage therapists and sexual healers, all inspired by Lovelock's vision of the planet.

It is too bad he named that book Gaia. The theory really belongs more to the Darwinian tradition than anything else.

By that i mean that Darwin's theory of natural selection showed how complexity could be explained by nothing more than entropy, which seems counterintuitive. But it is what makes the theory so beautiful and powerful.

Darwin's theory of species diversity requires genetic degeneration, survival of the fittest, and population isolation.

Lovelock expands that idea of population isolation into a more general theory of ecosystems, wherein the sum total of species diversification leads to another nonintuitive condition of self regulation, when taken as a complete system. The circumstances of that self regulation aren't supposed to be consciousness, but merely the entropy fed diversification, in it's specific form as described by Darwin.

Funny to me that today Darwin is attacked for being too non-spiritual, and Lovelock is attacked for being too spiritual. I just think of them as being so intertwined.

In 1990, David Brin wrote a science fiction book called "Earth", set in 2038 in which a fictional englishwoman named "Jen Wolling" is referred to as "the mother of modern Gaia Theory." She's an obvious stand-in for James Lovelock, though she's supposed to be a step beyond him. Anyway, in the book, Brin writes about how millions of people develop a religion around her theories, though she herself is nothing more than a mathematician. There are hundreds of different sects, some of whom hate one another. Wolling herself finds it all amusing, and loves nothing better than to come out with a new theory or idea that totally f*cks with her supposed followers. It strikes me that Brin described Lovelock to a T!

Wretched excess: F650 SUV

Unread postby Zardoz » Fri 04 Apr 2008, 19:53:44

Oh, what the hell. As long as we're racing toward the cliff with the pedal to the metal, it might as well be in something as absurd as this:

I wonder what that thing weighs? God, I hope it has a diesel engine.

No---please---not a diesel engine.

It turns out that new scientific data shows that diesel engines release significant amounts of soot that, together with CO2 emissions, go into the upper atmosphere and cause more greenhouse warming then the CO2 would alone.

Kewl beans, where can I test drive one of those monsters? It would certainly impress my F-150 driving co-workers more than my Honda Civic!

Exactly. What could be more appropriate for this monstrosity?

Even better: Diesel is about $4.39 a gallon around here now.

This truck is just the U.S. equivalent of the lip disc.

Image

Just a gratuitous expression of local culture run amok.

The diameter of the disc is analogous to the diameter of the wheel on the monster truck.

Check out the diameter of the wheels on the Chevy Volt concept. well, 90% of all concepts have oversised wheels. I don't understand that fetish.

How about for the first offense we just require that he let Ms. Lip Disk ride with him in the front seat everywhere he goes?

If he is caught driving without Ms. Lip Disk, it will be straight to the Soylent Green facility.
