Belatedly, Britannica lambastes Wikipedia findings

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he publisher of the venerable encyclopedia this week released a scathing 20-page rebuttal to a December article in the journal Nature that tallied errors in both Britannica and Wikipedia and found that the Web upstart more than held its own. The experts who reviewed comparable entries found 162 factual errors, omissions or misleading statements for Wikipedia, compared with 123 for Brittanica.

The article was widely seen as a validation of Wikipedia's content and methods. The Internet, meanwhile, has made the Encyclopedia Britannica an endangered species.

Planning for the Future: Wikipedia

Unread postby kevincarter » Thu 15 Nov 2007, 14:57:13

I've seen some wiki pages and they are impressive. It seems wiki is a way to set up a website so that everyone can build its contents, something like the PO.com forums but more dynamic.

I think that the Planning for the future could very much use a wiki section. Think about it, that forum is full of really smart people with very good advice :) With that dream team we could set up a kick ass planning for the future wiki and maintain the current forum. So for example when you look at canning, or guns, or stoves or whatever you get a wiki page with nice ordered information on how to do things, look at this example it is awesome.

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

HOW TO DO (wiki index)

Unread postby kevincarter » Fri 07 Dec 2007, 07:49:42

There are huge amounts of information in this forum and on the internet, also in this particular forum it seems there are very intelligent personas and brilliant individuals like yourself :) that could help build a great resource place only if the proper tool was available, I think wiki can do that. This thread is an index of useful wiki pages that cover “HOW TO DO THINGS” related with planning for the future. As we find more/better pages we’ll include them in this initial post so it serves as an index. You can very much help by submitting wiki pages that you know of or by writing the ones that are listed here but have no content(marked with a *, just click on them and then on the “edit” tag at the upper part of the screen). If you don’t know what the hell “wiki” means please don’t panic, sounds as difficult as it seemed to write an email or participate in a forum in 1996, but if you try it will prove just as easy and useful. We are starting with a “food” category, ideas for more categories with their chapters are welcomed, and of course better / new wiki pages are welcomed too.

Lets Wiki!

Unread postby Pops » Thu 14 Feb 2008, 17:57:09

Someone with more savvy explained to me the PO.com format is for talking and not researching.

Researching should be in the Wiki format.

So let’s GO!

You don’t need to sign-up, volunteer or nuthin’ just pick your favorite topic and populate the category. Try to link to authorities and of course back to the merged threads, which can be found here in the PFTF Index.

The deal is lots of folks will be looking to us for concrete and credible answers in the days to come; not just talk. Lets give them something they can use.

OK, I stated adding some links and wrote an intro to the food section here:
http://www.peakoil.com/wiki/index.php/Food

Get in there and edit me, add hyperlinks to all the keywords I salted into the intro or just post up some relevant links.

It ain't all that hard and I am an old technophobe...

Wow, what a great idea! Wikileaks could be the kind of thing, however, that the empire will not like.

Of course, in the world of the politicians there is dirt upon dirt. This site could be used as a means of threatening those that are dirty. The threat of it could be used to keep people in line as well as to reveal what whistleblowers have to say. Imagine being able to leak wihtout having to pass through the gauntlet of the established press.
When it comes down to it, the people will always shout, "Free Barabbas." They love Barabbas. He's one of them. He has the same dreams. He does what they wish they could do. That other guy is more removed, more inscrutable. He makes them think. "Crucify him."

What all is supposed to be on here? I clicked random page and it took me to stuff about food, however, that article is somewhat unreachable from the main page unless you specifically searched "food". I can see someone typing in "how to prepare" and coming up with nothing.

Needs better links/organization!

Hmm, I'll have tons of time this weekend since I have tests this week. I'll attempt to clean this up. For one thing, the main page should not be an article. It should have a format similar to Wikipedia perhaps with a fat link somewhere saying "Click here for an introduction to what peak oil is!"

Somewhere in there it says:
Please note that all contributions to PeakoilWiki may be edited, altered, or removed by other contributors. If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly, then don't submit it here.
You are also promising us that you wrote this yourself, or copied it from a public domain or similar free resource (see Project:Copyrights for details). DO NOT SUBMIT COPYRIGHTED WORK WITHOUT PERMISSION!

IOW, it is all open source. You don't need to justify anything in this thread or anywhere else except in the links and references you cite in your contribution.

Contribute away!

Tehre is also this idea of an index, to have an index on a single post USING P.O. WIKI AND OTHER WIKI PAGES ALREADY DONE, (why do it twice if it's already done somewhere else?, let's just gather all the good quality wiki we can find.)

Theres a seemingly infinite number of topics which can be explored.

A starting place would be useful. The Main Page is all well and good, but it needs to be a presentation piece for the uninitiated. To get down and dirty, as well as offer a place where notes can be organized and where unexplored topics can be listed can be a help.

in the Wiki, enter: Start Exploring Peak Oil

see what that gets you, go from there.

Its a place to start pecking away at.

Thanks to those who made an effort.

As I mentioned earlier, this is obviously a Talking Board and not a helping baord.

61 pages at this point

Some could surely use more extensive content

I cleaned up a lot of gibberish, added a little

A little here and there adds up fast with many hands.

I came by this wiki about open source techs etc., and at first glance it seems like very serious and extremely usefull combination of ideas for planning for future, how to build an ecovillage etc:

http://openfarmtech.org/index.php?title=Main_Page

Perhaps at least a link to this wiki could be added to the PO wiki?
