$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')The argument is silly; all you have to do is look at the balance of payments over the past few decades to see the truth.

Good point, looking at the balance of payments demonstrates that I am right. The balance in goods and services has stabilized and even started to return to equillibrium (thanks to a weak dollar). The only reason our total trade balance continues to get worse is because of higher oil prices. If oil prices stabilize or even start to fall then our total trade balance will improve faster.

That's a nice prayer, Snark.

Only you could look at that graph and read something good into it.

As for oil prices falling, good luck. With God on your side, I'm sure you'll turn it around.

I didn't say it was a good thing, I simply used it as evidence that America is not without exports, that our oil bill is inflating our trade balance.

Personally I don't care about the trade balance. If foreigners want to hold U.S. assets instead of U.S. products then so be it. It is their money, they can do with it whatever they want.

I've seen the chart. After the Oil Crises of the 70's people actually conserved.

Industry conserved. Gasoline consumption actually rose. More efficient vehicles and mpg resulted in more driving.

And as you noted, most of the heavy lifting has been done already, along with greater dependence upon the auto.
