Microsoft unveils table computer

Microsoft unveils table computer. The computer does away with the need for a keyboard
Microsoft has unveiled a new touch-sensitive coffee table-shaped computer called "Surface".
Designed to do away with the need for a traditional mouse and keyboard, users can instead use their fingers to operate the computer.

Also designed to interact with mobile phones placed on the surface, Microsoft says it will initially sell the unit to corporate customers. These will include hotels, casinos, phone stores and restaurants. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6703249.stm

who's going to be using this stuff? how are they going to keep manufacturing stuff ? how much will costs increase while oil increases?

It would be great for corporate presentations, but I don't see it replacing the desktop or laptop -- well ever

I have to say best of all is the laptop - laptop keyboard last the life of the machine without getting all stiff. Laptops use less energy. You can grab a laptop and run, even though now things are just barely beginning to get shitty this has already proven useful. Laptops tend to use touchpads, which although a bit slower than a mouse, also won't cripple you for life.

$3 Windows XP Faces Tough Competition from $1 Windows Vista

Unread postby EROEI » Sun 22 Jul 2007, 21:25:15

$3 Windows XP is bound to face tough competition from Windows Vista, as pirated copies of the latest Microsoft operating system are sold as cheap as $1 in Mainland China.

China is one of the markets worldwide where the adoption of Windows Vista has been limping. Reports have indicated that Windows Vista sales in China are insignificant, as Microsoft managed to sell only 244 genuine licenses of the operating system in the first two weeks of general availability.

OMG Microshaft only managed to sell 244 copies of windoz vista in China the land of 15 Giga? I could see more girlscout cookies in 2 days walking door to door. This is pathetic.

"many Chinese consumers may have chosen either pirated versions of Vista that sell for as little as US$1, or free versions of Linux that are offered free of charge. Although Vista contains enhanced antipiracy technology, press reports indicate that illegal copies of Vista were readily available in China, and piracy remains quite prevalent in the country"

"can't see a profit in the $3 suite because there is no profit to be made in emerging markets. However, they won't be emerging markets forever, and then Microsoft will benefit from a foundation of Windows users. "

So no one gave Billy Bill Gates and Balmer a heads up about Peak Oil and negative EROEI yet?? Emerging markets? Potential? Return on Investment? Future projected Growth? Bacteria in a Vista Disc?

I really wanted to play the Alan Wake but stupid Bill Gates made it a freaking VISTA ONLY game and which means it only works on VISTA and not only that its freaking only on DirectX10 with ZERO backwards compat. and being how it is Gates schemed to have DirectX10 as ONLY on Vista and even John Carmack says there is no reason hell on earth for XP not to have DirectX10 except cause Gates is wanting be gatekeeper to riches of the world more MONNIES for him and Balmer and the likes @ Microshit.

Since Microshaft force everything exclusive DirectX10 only and Vista and "GAMES FOR WINDOZ" , VISTA ONLY, VISTA READY, Vista this.. Vista that, Vista Instant Upgrade, Vista Defender, IE7+, DRM, UAC, AERO, blah blah blah.. M$FT like a paranoid overprotective jealous husband worried he about to get cockholded or something... . I still can't believe MOFT ditched/abandoned/pulled the rug out of XP like it was some bastard child that it didn't want to raise or be associated with in any way..... just so Billy Bill Gates can pimp out his new Vista and whore his pocketliners that much more lucriative,,,, sick.... And he'll do it again in two more years when Vienna comes out in 09. Same shit with Office 2007 Ultimate and that retarded looking Ribbon interface like that Bush "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" banner.... sick bastards all of them... Dick Cheney is just like Ballmer....

Save Windows XP! The clock is ticking

Microsoft plans to end most sales of Windows XP on June 30, despite a deep reluctance by many business and individuals about moving to Vista. InfoWorld believes such an expensive, time-consuming shift with problematic benefits should not be forced on Windows users, so we have decided to rally XP users to demand that XP be kept available. more ')

Forget petitions. Bill Gates is a hardened criminal. He's not interested in what you think. He's only interested in money and power. If you really think he's gonna stop selling xp, you should be buying up copies. You'll make a fortune scalping them on Ebay later.

Might have cared one or two years ago. Now, my office, most of my coworkers, my home, my laptop... everything is Ubuntu. I don't intend to go back.

Ubuntu Linux is the "heirloom seed" of operating system software for sure. Get yourself a bootable CD of linux for free or a couple of bucks and at least spend an hour or two getting familiar and all the while
maintain your existing OS without risk.

There are faster alternatives. Also don't use gnome or kde. Those things are way overbloated.

Meh. Depends on the hardware, just like Vista, I guess. I run Xubuntu (xfce based) on my 400 MHz and 900 MHz laptops, and standard (Gnome) Ubuntu on my desktop "more than I need" boxes.

I've been using some Linux/Unix for over a decade now. Servers I run OpenBSD. But, mostly I don't care to bother any more with my desktop computers. Ubuntu starts up and runs. More software comes "with" it (downloadable chunks, the Debian heritage) than I have any need for. Haven't had to install my own library for anything in forever. Ubuntu is the first Linux that I have had to do exactly nothing to. This has its place in the world.

But, it's all good. Use and contribute. The beauty of free software is that playing with alternatives costs you nothing.

Arch linux

jasonraymondson you're wrong, KDE and Gnome are not slow, only when you boot up the computer they take time

it's just that Ubuntu, Debian etc... they still support i386 it means some old 20 year old CPU when they compile their software, they don't take advantage of all the inventions (extenstions to CPU's) in the last few decates

stick with Arch Linux they compile their software for i686 which i belive is pentium III and above

Right. Get a clue.

Vista sucks though. Do not buy. It is the least pirated software on the interwebs.
