I'm not proud to be an American, but I'm glad to be an American. There are a lot of achievements that came from America that I have a lot of respect for, and a lot of things our country has done and is doing that I am ashamed of. America is a great country but I personally can't take credit for it, and I am not a better person simply for being an American. Being proud of your nationality is for people who aren't proud of themselves as individuals.

In comparison with other "world powers" throughout history, I'd say that America has done a pretty fine job. No one is perfect of course, especially when in the position of absolute power as the US was post WWII, but I think we have handled it better than any European government ever did.

There always have been and there always will be those who dream of a peaceful ruling power, but those are just fantasies and can’t be used as a measuring stick. The bottom line is that man is a territorial predator who instinctively hoards resources and suppresses rivals because it is in his best interest to do so.

If he didn't, he would not occupy the throne for very long.

Well I'm not American so I shouldn't comment.

But I'm not even proud to be human.

All in all, I'm proud of America. If you compare the country to some ethereal utopia, it comes up extremely short. However, if you read history and compare the USA to past superpowers, it shines bright. Things could be much, much better, but that's always the case with human civilization.

The ability to post to threads like this do make me thankful and proud my ancestors had the guts to stand and many die for that ability.

I suppose they also died to protect your right to disrespect them.

Have at it…

Probably not, because they are "rigged" by the Nazis and all.

When you said “and all” I thought of the nearsighted Kid who imagined himself a Bad Man in the movie The Unforgiven.

Sorta like some here...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('zensui', 'F')rom Wikipedia:

American may mean:

* A person or attribute of the United States of America
* A person or attribute of the Americas, the lands and regions of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere
* A person or attribute of the indigenous peoples of the Americas

What kind of american are you talking about?

The kind of american that bombs third world americans back to the stone ages if they don't sell us their resources for 10 cents on the dollar.

The kind of american that pays more attention to the size of rims on their SUV rather than food supplies.

The kind of american that hates mexicans, but won't do the work they do.

The kind of american that says to question our government is a terrorist act.

That kind of american.

Can ya dig it man?

You could always move Rocman. I mean you are living on stolen land, using the internet that was subsidized by TPTB, using electricity that is produced by burning coal, and paying taxes that go to make bombs.

Why not take yourself to a nice uninhabited tropical island and start your own country.

Hurry, I want you to make it there before hurricane season ends...

In all actuality, I like the fact that someone can whine and complain about their government. I find that most people who would say no, either envision some fantasy land where everyone gets along, or they do not know their history, and what the former powers did to keep their power.

I think a good poll would ask, What power in history did the best job. (or least horrible job if you prefer)
