This lives right over my bed. 7 rounds of 12 gauge 00 buck just for uninvited guests such as yourself. Hopefully the dog slows you down enough for me to reach the shotty. If you're still going after that, I'll have time to reach my purse which has my Glock 19 and 45 Winchester Ranger +P+ 9mm hollowpoints. If you're still going after that, you are just more of a badass than me and you were fated to live while I die.

Well, there is me, no slouch when it comes to defending myself unarmed, though I make no claim as to being some kind of 'superman'. There is the norse style saex knife I keep within reach from bed. There is my fox hound, that sleeps 3 feet away, and finally there is my Winchester Ranger 12G shotgun that resides about 12 feet away.

Am I a 'keyboard toughie'? Perhaps, but that doesn't mean if someone broke into my house and was trying to do damage, that they wouldn't get my best effort to stop them cold. It is a survival instinct after all. I have a couple of years of martial arts training in krav maga, kickboxing, and various ground fighting and submission techniques.
I was in not one, but two branches of the U.S. military (Army and Navy). I will now highlight what could be considered a level of 'dorkdom'. Here is a picture of me, showing one of the things I like to do with some spare time. Get in armor and get medieval on people.

Great minds and all that... That's exactly what hangs on my headboard.

Funny how those who live in a Right to Protect state indicate they are prepared today and those that don’t pretend this might only happen when TS hits; tisk, tisk. As for me I have few outside defenses aside from my and my neighbors dogs.

Well that and some few miles from someone silly enough to come wondering into a strangers house. That said; I do have a few things at hand depending on where I happen to pass out and whether you are a bird or a buck.

Oh, as to my first point, I now live in a state that says I have a right to use force; better check where you live before you get too tough or the morning after could be a bitch… Google Castle Doctrine.
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

Yeah me too... gotta love a 12 gauge. We had a spate of robberies out here at one point. The dog tipped me off when he was orbiting the house growling. When I found the scumbag he was hiding behind a tree about 200 yards from the house. (I could see him shifting feet - I have exceptional night vision and don't use a flashlight) - I was wearing my body armor (terrycloth bathrobe) and protective footgear (flip flops) - I said "step out from behind the tree! Hands first!" - He didn't move so I racked the slide... I've never seen anyone run so fast.  the fucker almost got tangled in the barbwire top of the fence (ow that had to hurt) - then he sprinted down the road and jumped into the neighbors yard down the road making a beeline out towards his buddy who apparently had car parked down on another road... I got a good laugh hearing the neighbors pack of boxers chasing his sorry ass though the woods. The sheriff got him and his buddy on their way out the 10 mile exposed stretch that leads up this way. Very hard to get out of here unnoticed when the alarm is up. Neighbors up here have been known to block the only road out when somethings up. They caught one asshole that way after he robbed a place and calls went out. He was stopped 2 miles out the road by about 10 neighbors with rifles/shotguns leveled over their car hoods. Dumbass...

But I probably just made all that up right Eastbay? Robbing rurals is a good way to get dead. Oh by the way - sweet armor Olaf...

Jesus, is everyone on here a gun nut? I refuse to get into that because I would either off myself or a friend while drunk or something if I had one around. If my Easton softball bat can't ward off an intruder, I lose, I guess. Olaf, are you admitting you're a LARP dork?

Not exactly. No lightning bolts for me and we fight with rattan (solid form of bamboo) not wiffle bats or foam weapons. Much more power and pain involved...but otherwise...yes. Any of the folks you see in the picture you show would be knocked unconscious in about 2 seconds. Not bashing LARPers. They are just different kinds of dorks. :)

Yep.

Why is it so hard to believe that there are people here who are perfectly capable of defending themselves from home invaders? Admittedly, there may be a few posters who are just pretending they're tough. But surely there are people here who ARE capable. I personally know lots of people who would get very ugly with home invaders and yet easily be able to return to sleep after the police and/or paramedics hauled away what was left. 8O

That being said, I am confident that my three dogs would alert me before anyone could get to my bedroom. Two of them are actually somewhat formidable. The third is old, but she can act like a wild bitch and would probably make someone think twice, giving the other two time to flank the visitor before moving in for the kill.

I suspect that rather than being surprised in my bed, I would actually encounter the intruder in my living room, where I would bathe him in the very bright light of my 6-cell mag flashlight. As I tried to calm the dogs and call them off the stranger, I would proceed to share the Good News about Jesus with him and point out to him how disappointed Jesus would be to find one of His flock breaking into the house of another of His flock.

If the dogs and the Good News have not worked their magic at this point, I will be in position to satisfy an abiding curiosity I have had about how well a 6-cell flashlight substitutes for the rattan sticks I used in my Kali/eskrima study :)

On a serious note, to those that say they can respond to a situation with a gun almost instantly do they have children living with them? Do they ever have visiters staying with children? If their gun is quickly retrievable (as in not in a gun safe) and doesn't have a trigger lock on it they could end up with a dead kid. Kids can be tricky, sneaky little beggars and could end up playing with that gun. Kids also do dumb things. That equation could easily equal a dead kid.

Do they ever have visiters staying with children? If their gun is quickly retrievable (as in not in a gun safe) and doesn't have a trigger lock on it they could end up with a dead kid.

As Eli noted a couple of pages back, there are small gun vaults specifically designed to hold a loaded handgun on the nightstand, which can be opened in a matter of seconds by deftly entering the proper code. Children do not possess the finger dexterity, nor do they know the code. The keys in the lock in the photo are a back-up means of entry in case the batteries fail. Of course, the keys are normally safely locked away elsewhere and the batteries are kept charged. :)
Households with children and households with firearms are not mutually exclusive. Nor, IMO, should they be.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Eli', 'A')nd Shannymarra here is what I have: Vault Securing weapons is a must as far as I am concerned.

Yup Turtle, Also you can keep the magazine out of the handgun for added safety. It only takes a second to load a handgun when it is stored that way. A child under 14 would have a very hard time loading a handgun, pulling the slide on mine is pretty stout.

Also to all those with children who are nervous don't forget it isn't just handguns in your own house you have to worry about. When the time is right all kids should learn how dangerous handguns are. What happens when they go over to a friends house? They have seen thousands of handguns on TV by that time and will be naturally very curious if they run into one.

and Zardoz said we were all a bunch of keyboard toughies, just for that I am going to type something really nasty about him.
