$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eastbay', '
')Yeah, Turtle... maybe so. Probably so.

But the topic of this thread was about being surprised while in bed. Not a scenario with one of us surprising an intruder on the stairs or in the kitchen or anywhere else.

I think several of us pointed out why that is never going to happen.
If we're going to speculate about meaningless "what-if"s that will never happen, I prefer considering the following scenario:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')'m in bed, sound asleep, when suddenly I wake up to find Monica Bellucci, Jessica Alba and Scarlett Johansson all wrestling naked on top of me. I'm still groggy from sleep, but I quickly reach for ...

[everyone feel free to replace the three women in my scenario with whomever you wish when considering your own reaction in this situation] :P

If we're going to speculate about meaningless "what-if"s that will never happen......

Exactly my point. Our weapon's, for example, are very nearby while we're sleeping. But they're certainly not in bed between the sheets with us. We would have a tough time getting used to brushing up against the cold steel of one or two of our AK-47's lying there between the sheets along side us, with a round in the chamber and the safety off. Or maybe with a semi-automatic handgun or two set on condition zero resting in our hand (s) all night.

Oh, I have no doubt there are people who sleep like this. Maybe even a few here. This site can attract a few peculiar characters now and then, that's for sure. Maybe this is why some suddenly stop posting. I can imagine, ya know, an itch in a hard to reach spot screaming at you in the middle of the night... or a bad dream.

Reminds me... I've been told, and it's probably true, that no matter how crazy and bizaare one can imagine a possible human behavior to be, someone's probably nutty enough to do it. So nothing surprises me anymore.

Pffft, with GUNS, the story dies with the intruder. With THESE, the tale lives on...and on...and on. :-D

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jboogy', 'A')nd I must take exception to your refering to me as one of the more violent posters in this thread , all I got is dogs , remoteness , and a popgun next to the door . Everyone else here is ready to be air-dropped into Baghdad , armaments wise.

You were also the one who suggested "instead of heads on pikes just imagine headless bodies on pikes" which BTW I think is an excellent suggestion.

Waste of good resources right there.

Dried blood 2 lbs per 100 sq ft.
Ground Bones 5 lbs per 100 sq ft
Wood Ashes 2 lbs per 100 sq ft.

Plus all that meat that you could barter or trade as long pig jerky

Nice miniguns!

The problem is, they eat serious quantities of ammo. Worse, they need a lot of parts - which won't be too easy to come by. Mobility might be an issue in a fuel-scarce world, too.

Fortunately, I've come up with answers that work for me...as long-time readers know. 8)

So last night I got an interesting insight into this question. For the record I should add that I have not been through any experiences that would give me PTSD nor have I been through any intense military training.

We had some guests staying with us. One of our dogs was not socialized very well so we kept her in our bedroom during the evening and, when we went to be for the night, closed the door to a crack (so the cat can get in and out) with a small step stool in front of the door. At 5:30 am my three-year-old opened the door and the dog barked. I landed on my feet yelling in best kung-fu fashion. I was not moving to attack, someone with a gun could have dropped me where I stood (unless they shot in the direction of the dog first).

Two observations:

A) my primate brain was in control for a second or two, I was on autopilot ready for fight/flight with no warning prior to the sound to the bark.

B) I mentioned early in the thread that if things degrade and we feel threatened I have an idea on how to make the house not burglar proof but such that you would have to make noise to get inside. If I feel nervous (because TS is about to HTF), I have little doubt that I will be able to be up and have the go to gun in hand before anyone gets the second leg in the window.

I should add that after 20 minutes in mom's arms and some dad cooked pancakes the three year old was fine, at least until his future shrink says else wise.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 't')o those that say they can respond to a situation with a gun almost instantly do they have children living with them?

Yes.

As for me:

Glock 22 / TLR-1

Remington 870 / Surefire
Ruger Mini-14

That should cover home defense.

I used to have my G-22 rigged up with a beamshot laser...I pulled it and installed Big Dot tritium sights.

Having an active light source might make me a target. I can't say I''m comfortable with that. I much prefer to stay in the darkness...or at least, the shadows. 8)

On a lighter note, I would go on the verbal offense, shame him with a few well chosen mom-guilt=type phrases, and then suggest he go down the street to _____'s house where I happen to know they have ________ .

I have a household of 6. During darkness, I need a light to identify my target (my personal requirement). Additionally, a bright light shined into the eyes of an intruder at close range (inside my dark house) can work to my advantage.

If I DON’T need it, or if I want to remain stealth, I can always leave it turned off.

Depending on what I had to eat, I might incinerate you with a particularly loud and nasty fart, or you might just gag, convulse and slump to the ground if it was one of the silent corrosive variety. Should there be any witnesses, I'd blame it on my wife and if that failed, I'd blame it on her cooking. If the teenage nephews are in the household, a veritable farting contest would ensue and the resulting mushroom cloud would be visible from space.

WRT lights, I've set up remotely activated floods before. Since extremely bright lights coming on all at once would hamper my vision as well, a few leds might be all that is neccessary to do the trick: illuminate the zombie horde leader so that I, my wife or any of the other family members in any of the other bedrooms woud be able to line up the heads and torsoes above the three little dots.
This assumes the yappy dogs, parrots, geese and any other electric or mechanical alarm systems all simultaneously fail.

It would also be a good idea for fellow tribe members to stage a few paintball drills in extremely low light conditions just to get a feel for how intractible these sort things can really be.

You kids still planning how to nab the burgalars?

Anybody got any statistics on home invasions and how they turn out-whether or not the homeowner has a gun? That would be interesting to read...
