Re: Welcome Guests

Hi, I'm afraid I am new to the internet (believe it or not) and don't yet know how to use these forums. I would like to ask a sincere question about peak oil (I'm fairly well informed for a non-expert, well read on the issue). But how do I post my own question? As far as I can find out, all I can do is respond to other people posts. Any help?

First, do a search and see if your question has already been asked

if not then hit the *new topic* button and write.

The same way you posted this question. Did you mean something else?

Can someone remove the "whatispeakoil.bravehost.co" from the title of this thread? It's screwing up the formatting on the front page.

You know if you want some help with your web-design, you could ask. There are a lot of smart people here who know how to build a website. Better yet, you could post an add in the newspaper that you'll pay a student a few bucks to help you with your webpage. Students are always looking for real work experience. It might cost you a hundred bucks to get something decent, but it's worth it.

Personally, a simple free template would elevate your site to a level where people might actually read it. Presenting peak oil as a pile of hand written notes held down with a rock is not the way to publish a book or present information on a website. I suggest you work on your formating and also buy a real domain and server space. But even if you want to use a myspace like service such as bravehost, you still need to work on your presentation.

Sorry about sounding harsh, but this is a complex well studied subject so it should be presented as such. And web design is commonly criticized, so that's something you need to think about.

Ummmm...

I just clicked on the link to your site and was greeted with that Microsoft Installer thing that pops up when someone's site tries to install software on your computer.

I could not close the window, so I had to yank my DSL cable AND had to close the window via control/alt/delete...AND I cleared out my history, cookies and cache just so it wouldn't come back to haunt me...as so many of those things often do.

I doubt it was anything particularly sinister, but you have to be careful thesedays...

You seem like an alright human so I doubt any of this is intentional on your part, but if you really want to spread the word you may want to host your page elsewhere or can the ads. Don't know if it was the host or the ads, but SOMETHING wanted to makes its home on my hard drive.

Well, on behalf of humanity in general...thanks!
But here's the thing: if you are trying raise awareness of an issue as important as Peak Oil, you should be doing it out of the motivation of your own concience...not because you are looking for recognition, "props", or any sort of pat on the head...or money, if that's the case.

You do it if you think it's the right thing to do...don't expect praise and adulation to come raining down from the skies...it won't.
In my own case, I've spent 27 of my 42 years trying to raise awareness of a great many issues through my music.
Has it worked? Maybe here and there.
Has anybody thanked me for it? Maybe a couple dozen times over the years...out of probably hundreds of thousands of people who have heard my stuff during that time.

Is that the point of doing it? Nope. That's just ego gratification and it taints the purity of the action if you allow it to influence your motivations.
Raise awareness if you feel motivated to do so...just don't do it because you think you're going to "get" something out of it.
And if you're really doing this to get "ad clicks"...well, you need to take a moral "inventory" one of these days...this is far too world-changing a subject to try to make money off of it.

Yes...well THEY are not the subject of THIS post that YOU started...YOU are.
And I would not have responded to this post had the ad that had been on there tried to load software onto my browser after I clicked on your link out of open-minded curiosity. That kind of thing really pisses me off!
As for the people who run THIS site...I doubt they are getting rich off of it...and they probably have spent time, money and care on this site.
As for Savinar...well, didn't he forego a law career in order to do what he does? He would have made a LOT more money in that field, I suspect....and he has probably spent time, money and care on his site.

And, for my own small part in the world of activism...I gave up a regular life and career in order to try to make the world a better and more aware place...and I KNOW I have spent time, money and care on trying to do so and have gotten very little reward for it....not that that is really the point, as mentioned previously

What sacrifice have YOU made by throwing together your insta-site...with all the ads? Hmmmmm?
By the way...there are free site hosts that don't use ads. If all you're trying to do is spread the word, why not utilize one of them? Hmmmmm?
(Hate to get personal on you...but you're pressing the issue...)

I thought I'd take a break from rolling around in giant piles of your money, to chime in.

This is a 100% volunteer community effort here folks.

Everybody here, including me, is an unpaid volunteer.

It actually costs money to host this little experience.

Now... if you'll excuse me, I need to report in to my Chinese handlers; then it's off to the club to sit around sneering at poor folks.

<Lights giant cigar with rolls of food stamps... extinguishing the flame into the soft, yielding eye of a baby seal>

That is all.

(Now that's comma usage!)

Okaaaay...so what you are now saying is that you are making a choice to spend long hours covering your own a**.
Sacrificing to only help yourself isn't really much of a sacrifice...
But I kinda see where your innate motivations are from your responses, so take care and best of luck to ya! Good luck with the garden!
