Things could get very bad if Iran drops a nuke on Tel Aviv, the Israelis retaliate big time, and a world war ensues, with the middle east and its oil as the prize.

Yep, leave it up to the governments to fuck it all up. (ALL governments that is)

To define what SHTF will be like is very difficult because quite simply not all the variables are there. One thing, which we see now, is a slow grind. Prices slowly creep up over time. Interest rates slowly rise over time. No one realizes how dangerous the path is because the changes dont happen right NOW. People just complain and make minor life changes.

What takes it into the unknown is how people and governments will react. They could bank on their first world status and powers to just flat out buy their way out of it, but that really is a hit or miss solution. They may also go a route that involves a bit more strong arm.

I see it ending 2 ways. Either a country will take military action on an unprecendented scale to secure resources or a country will go broke.
The first option will be an all out world war unlike anything else. Previous wars were fought for glory and empire building. When a war is fought for empire saving all bets are off.
The second option is almost as bad. Instead of an empire tumbling at the hands of overwhelming military power it will tumble at the hands of its own people. Imagine what its going to be like when the government coffers are dry and welfare momma and baby daddy dont get that government check......

(SHIVER)

What some folks may not realize is that applies to a heck of a lot of rural America as much as urban America. People living in poverty living in the sticks can be just as dangerous. Just what will Bubba do if (Disability check, WIC, Welfare, Military pension, lotto tickets) stops? The difference between them and a Katrina victim is I know Bubba is armed.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Baldwin', 'L')atin America, Asia, the ME, and Africa will collapse first.

Phew! Luckily our oil doesn't come from those countries. We can just kick back and watch them crumble from the drivers seat of our latest model hybrid...

Really though. These countries may lose the economic means to buy oil before us. That's about it, and much of their population has a lot smaller horse to fall off of.

When it comes to Latin America, well you already live there.

If they do collapse before us, don't worry they'll make sure to take their oil infrastructure down with them.

We're all in this one together.

I know I'm positioned downwind of the fan because the UK couldn't feed itself in 1917, let alone now. Once the ships stop docking and the trucks stop rolling, the country is fucked. Here's hoping the decline is at least gradual.

Twilight you Brits had trouble then, and during/after WWII too, I think there was real rationing and real hunger, of course during, but also after WWII up into the early 1960s right? At least the old council houses etc were set up to have gardens.... we don't even have that in the US....

Yeah, we're so screwed....

Truly the most coherent post ever from the Raph.

Stuff's hitting the fan every day, I think we're desensitized.
Or maybe it just hasn't reached some of us, YET.

Saw a story on the local news that newspaper carriers (which apparently are all adults now, WTF?) can't make ends meet with gas prices, so maybe the paper doesn't get delivered soon (doesn't affect me, but it's an indicator). I looked at the ole lady and said "uhm, use a bicycle like I did when I was a kid with the morning AND afternoon paper route?" The contradictions are growing exponentially. Common sense is non existent. I mean really, the houses you deliver to are on a route all close together, perfect job for the bicycle, but it will never occur to the average dope.

I wrote down some indicators a couple years ago, and they're here.
You know what they are, we discuss them here every day.

Time to order the emergency food, stockpile bourbon and tobacco, and get my pistol permit (and I hate guns, but if everyone else has them and I have the supplies....you know the story) and expand the garden as Strider3700 reminded us recently. All this foreknowledge has to be put to good use.

Should be done with all that by the time hurricane season is in full force, I reckon.

Don't worry Raph, I'm staying away from both the exhaust AND the intake. One spits stuff at you, the other sucks you in to be shredded to pieces. Ima gonna go stand over here....

When TSHTF? TEOTWAWKI, IIRC. OTOH, WTF, it might not be that bad.

They say that crisis can bring out the best in humanity. That has always been dependent on there being someone else with not only the good-heartedness and generosity, but also the available resources to donate.

Who will have the available resources?

I'm expecting to find out just how sociopathic we all really are when our survival and our way of life is at stake.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('George Carlin', 'W')hen you're born into the world, you get a ticket to the freakshow. If you're born in the US, you get a front-row seat.

You can either get on the stage, or get situated in your secluded, barricaded, solar-powered media room and get out the popcorn. Either way, I'm also expecting that this will be the last, best show.

When? Ha Ha, If one needs to ask, it ain't happened to you yet
Answer 'rather' depends upon ones personal circumstance.
For some, self included, Collapse has already begun (just getting started - ain't seen nuttin' yet.)
Those of the 'lower' rungs of the economic (consumption) ladder will be struck down first and probably adapt relatively easily (if they live).
Those presently existing on the manifold 'higher rungs' will experience proportionally greater falls (terminal impacts). Think Humpty Dumpty (free protein).

"At some [past] point, optimism seamlessly morphs into [wanton ignorance and willful] stupidity". (stolen and ammended)

"The sole basis of optimism is sheer terror [of the alternatives]." ~Oscar Wilde

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Baldwin', '
')Get real people, this isn't going to be something where the sheeple wake up on October 10th, go to their 9-5 job, then wake up on the 11th to find the world has ended.

I think purcatty has it pretty much nailed ... one day you have a job, then one day you don't. This will happen (for 80 percent of people) long long before the electricity fails, food shortages and the rest.

How many of you could survive a year without a job - right now ? How about 5 years ? Anybody for ten ? Assume any money invested in stocks, real estate or bonds - or for that matter, held in any paper currency - is pretty much worthless. Figure the govt find s a way to confiscate in principle or fact any hard assets like gold and silver as well.

Maybe one family/person in ten thousand could make it more than a year in such an environment without massive govt handouts.

Then someday the govt will stop handing out ...

Anyone heading into bankruptcy, which is a LOT of people, anyone who owes back taxes, anyone heading into foreclosure, again a LOT of people, is staring streight down the barrel of this kind of situation.

this is why some hope for a fast collapse.

I think the feces has been hitting the fan for some time now, just little turds one at a time. The mother lode is yet to come.

Have seen friends lose jobs and foreclosed upon.

Cannot think of much that has gone down in price.

I kinda expect a slow decline, which will lead to more and more crime. Lately, lots more stories of folks stealing scrap metal from homes/farms, car & home break-ins, 7/11 hold-ups, etc.

It will only take one big turd to make things really smelly.

sure, I'm self employed, but I did better in '05, the year I went car-free for the summer, than in '06. People in my field are pulling in their horns, things are gearing down. I'm trying to sell my car because as much as I love the thing, I think I can do better biking and perhaps getting an old beater or just renting a car when needed.

I'm actually considering the possibility of getting a job, and doing what I do on the side. I'm trying to work out of debt but am still not sure if it's possible, if it's not I'm prepared to just rent a cheap place and draw ppl's caricatures in bars, at fairs, stuff like that, do odd jobs, etc. Because if TSHTF for me financially, I won't be able to have a bank account as such (garnishment), credit cards, anything like that - the system will make sure I'm never in a position to pay 'em. Remember what I said about capitalism eating itself, shooting itself in the foot?

Others are considering things along this line too - one large businessman saying sales are the worst EVER and he's been in biz a LONG time. Another ready to pack it in. Another got out of his shop and just works from home. And so on.
