Man, in my worse dreams almost none of the above disappears, it just becomes more expensive.

What I will miss will be the remaining beauty of the unspoiled parts of world that I have yet to see.

The biodiversity of the flora and fauna.

Peakoil will decimate the environment in the struggle to offset the loss. We are seeing it now with biofuels.

I don't plan on missing anything.

My off grid home will support my musical listening, philosophy studies, and photography.

I'll miss the mobility of the personal automobile. It's incredible to be able to zoom around. I was standing looking at Mount
Washingon yesterday. There was 4 feet of snow. Later we hung out at my friend's place on a lake, 100 miles away. The day before I was down by the ocean. It's not going to be as easy to get around after peak oil bites. I appreciate it much more now. I am going to miss it.

I will miss seafood since we presumably won't have radar and thus warning for hurricanes which rules out living near the coast.

I will miss the internet although I will still have my computer.

I will miss getting movies in the mail.

As far as AC I will have an earth sheltered home which will stay in the 70s during summer and muscovy ducks which will kill off 95% of the mosquitoes, fleas, and ticks everyone else will be forced to endure.

Herbs will heal us at least as good as hospitals although traumatic injury poses a problem.

I will welcome the return of community.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('max_power29', 'y')ou kind of backed up what i said though, Modern medical care
especially anaesthetics.

I've also decided recently to go to the liquor store and start stocking up on decent booze with each paycheck for both barter and getting wasted after the crash. I imagine there will be nobody to tell us not to grow marijuana during our short-ass lives either.

I wouldn't be too sure about that...unless you're thinking of a Lord-of-The-Flies-meets-Road-Warrior type future. There will be medical care to be have--just not the real high tech stuff. I think it will be like living during the American Civil War (Not before, not after, *during*). Except that we have a few more things up our sleeves.

As for anesthetics, we'll always have chloroform. And don't forget Heroin. Heroin? Yep. They gave it to me at Johns Hopkins after getting burned pretty good. They call it "Dilaudid" or "Synthetic Heroin". Heroin. It worked pretty well too.

I don't know much about antibiotics, but Penicillin was discovered early 20thC, right?

So...you could write yourself off--which is fine by me--or you could start studying medicine and first aid. Most community colleges offer EMT & Paramedic courses. That's the kind of person I'd want in my community.

As for me, I'll miss all the dramatic versions of Peak Oil events we all imagined :)

I'll miss discussing peak oil like it was an academic exercise. The reality of this is going to suck. It was a lot more fun as a looming threat than it will be as reality.

You're right - usable penicillin was developed during WWII, followed by all kinds of other useful antibiotics. (Penicillin was "discovered" around 1929, but it took WWII-era knowledge of chemistry and a massive amount of research funding to isolate it so you could inject it into folks without killing them with impurities in the "mold juice.")

I like your positive attitude about preserving medical technology! I think it's going to be one of the biggest challenges, but I think it's doable.

As for me: I grew up off-grid with an outhouse and stuff, so no big deal living without e.g. on demand hot water, but the love of my life relies on asthma meds. Post-peak is a horrifying prospect for me for that reason alone.

I'd guess you and yours may end up living on the coast far to the north of here. I had a rotten case of childhood asthma. The ocean and/or Lake Michigan was the cure. Carpeting was part of the problem.

I will miss-

Cigarettes (more than anything)
Spirits
Sweets/chocolate- no more Mars bars or Cadburys!
My car
Coca Cola
Listening to my favourite music

There are a lot of negatives but IMO PO could bring better points after the initial chaos. Communities would get together, man would be more in contact with the earth through farming, foraging, cooking, hunting etc. Pubs and churches (social centres) would play more in people's live's.

Standard of living drop would be horrendous. But after a while socially people would be better off.

Perhaps people would look back to the bad old days of commuting, traffic fumes, stress and consumerism with bitterness? That is of course they can grow/obtain their own food and live a moderate self sufficient lifestyle.

So many things...

But most of all having the big safety net under me that is state benefits. Up until now, losing a job was no big deal, I'd still get just about enough cash to live comfortability while I looked for work at my leisure.

How about open-mindedness and the ability to talk to people who's minds aren't controlled by culture and religion... That might go for good sooner or later.

Cheap travel so I can afford to visit my children (who are living in another country).

The income from my job so I could afford a lot of things. A loss of job would be like a sudden 1 000% jump in inflation. As inflation here is currently 2,6% I have difficulty sensing what it would be like, even having lived through time when inflation was up to 20%.

I will probably have lots of regrets about "why didn't I buy that while things were good and I had a job?" or "why didn't I visit so-and-so while travel was cheap?", and even "why did I waste money on that?".
We should teach our children the 4-Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rejoice.

How many open minded people do you know? If you know a few then you are lucky. Most people I'm in contact with worship celebrity's and there minds are controlled by TV news. I really don't' think I'll miss that. If you know many open minded individuals then I envy you sir :)

If there is one thing this whole peakoil thing has taught me, is that most in the west are as brainwashed as those in the east.
