Rock/Pop Music for Peak-Oilers. Hey anyone have recommendations of music with thoughtful or meaningful lyrics for responsible peak-oilers to listen to? Less self-centered "personal" songs and more social commentary.

I like Midnight Oil and Bruce Cockburn a lot, as well as Joe Jackson and The and Clash.

Meanwhile.... I listened to Mozart's Piano Concerto #20 the other day and I had a thought - one of the reasons that classical music was so viable in the pre-electrical-amplification days is that with all those loud acoustic instruments going at once, you can have a concert for a couple thousand or more people all at once. The local travelling troubadour with his lute could only entertain tens. Of course, "classical" music has always been publically funded either by governments or religious institutions.

I can jiggy with this. I'll run through my music base a little more and put up the relevant lyrics here.

The Prophet's Song by Queen.
Check Famous Quotes thread for lyrics and my interpretation of it.

{Oops. I'm not paying attention. Those lyrics are now in this thread http://www.peakoil.com/postt458.html (EE)}

A cornicopian finding him/herself a few years in the future...

Talking Heads- "Nothing But Flowers"

Here we stand
Like an Adam and an Eve
Waterfalls
The Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
The birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them
From the age of the dinosaurs
Cars have run on gasoline
Where, where have they gone?
Now, it's nothing but flowers

There was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers
you got it, you got it

We caught a rattlesnake
Now we got something for dinner
we got it, we got it

There was a shopping mall
Now it's all covered with flowers
you've got it, you've got it

If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower
you've got it, you've got it

Years ago
I was an angry young man
I'd pretend
That I was a billboard
Standing tall
By the side of the road
I fell in love
With a beautiful highway
This used to be real estate
Now it's only fields and trees
Where, where is the town
Now, it's nothing but flowers
The highways and cars
Were sacrificed for agriculture
I thought that we'd start over
But I guess I was wrong

Once there were parking lots
Now it's a peaceful oasis
you got it, you got it

This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
you got it, you got it

I miss the honky tonks,
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
you got it, you got it

And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
you got it, you got it

I dream of cherry pies,
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies
you got it, you got it

We used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries
you got it, you got it

This was a discount store,
Now it's turned into a cornfield
you got it, you got it

Don't leave me stranded here
I can't get used to this lifestyle

By the way Peter Garett is running as an MP for the Australian Labour Party.

I would have to say the album "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd, especially the song "Wish You Were Here", and "Welcome To The Machine"

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pink Floyd, Welcome To The Machine', '
')
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
Where have you been?
It's alright we know where you've been.
You've been in the pipeline, filling in time,
Provided with toys and 'Scouting for Boys'.
You brought a guitar to punish your ma,
And you didn't like school, and you
know you're nobody's fool,
So welcome to the machine.

Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
What did you dream?
It's alright we told you what to dream.
You dreamed of a big star,
He played a mean gituar,
He always ate in the Steak Bar.
He loved to drive in his Jaguar.
So welcome to the Machine.

This song is about a boy sick of school, drops out, buys a giutar, and attempts to make it as a rock star. Welcome to the machine, (the daily grind). You are a machine. Get up, go to work, go to bed, repeat.
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
This song is about Thermonuclear War. The earth has been destroyed, No green trees are left, because they have been either singed to a crisp during the blast, or have died of radiation sickness. No people are left, as the Nuclear War killed everyone. You have no idea if this is heaven, or hell. There is no people, but you have the whole earth to yourself. Everything has been obliterated in the giant inferno. The atmosphere has been destroyed by radiation, the very air its self is radioactive. The last 2 people on earth, trapped in holocaust, with no hope of bettering their situation, and living with the same fear, "Am I going to die today? What will kill me?" I miss the old world of green. Wish you were here, wish you were here.
Here Lies the United States Of America.

I like this snippet from The White Stripes song The Union Forever:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')Well I'm sorry but I'm not
interested in gold mines, oil wells, shipping or real estate
what would I liked to have been?
everything you hate

A voice of reason? :)

I'm a huge Midnight Oil Fan.

Midnight Oil
River Runs Red

So you cut all the tall trees down
You poisoned the eart and the sky
You've taken what's good from the ground
But you left precious little for me

You remember the flood and the fall
We remember the light on the hill
There should be enough for us all
But the dollar is driving us still

CHORUS
River runs red
Black rain falls
Dust in my hand
River runs red
Black rain falls
On my bleeding land

So we came and conquered and found
Riches of commons and kings
Who strangled and wrestled the ground
But they never put back anything

Now I'm trapped like a dog in a cage
Wherever the truth is pursued
It must be the curse of the age
What's taken is never renewed

CHORUS

I thought Midnight Oil are world famous?

They're a quality Aussie rock band with a sense of moral responsibility. Led by a tall guy with a shaven head called Peter Garret. Most famous song, Beds are Burning I guess. 80s hit.
Burning the midnight oil, whilst I still can.

Sam Phillips: "Black Sky"

the trees are listening each time a missile's made
they hide three mystics the earth sends from her grave
to tell us the future has been stolen away
by diggers, drillers and sellers
but we won't stop 'till we're under a black sky

he took my picture int he cemetery sun
my body was tempted to crumble into one
reunion of dust until creation's done
returning ashes to ashes
we won't stop 'till we're underneath a black sky

the commerce the intrigue
self-slaughtered souls cry out to dead poor men
for a drink at the water hole
but their tongues will burn dry
as the day they were sold for
forests raped into deserts
we won't stop 'till we're underneath a black sky

Bruce Cockburn
"Wise Users"

from the Honor The Earth CD which I highly recommend.

Hear me you business blackmailers
When I see what you've done to the wild
I feel like a man standing over
The corpse of his murdered child

Use it wisely
Use it wisely ... go on
Reap your harvest, Wise Users
'Til everything is gone

Haul the last fish from the ocean
Poison the beds where they spawn
Drag the last tiger to market
So some prick can stand tall in Taiwan

Use it wisely
Use it wisely ... go on
Reap your harvest, Wise Users
'Til everything is gone

And if you lay drunk in your wasteland
I'd take your wallet and spit right in your eye
No point in explaining this action
You'll never get it 'til the day that you die

Use it wisely
Use it wisely ... go on
Reap your harvest, Wise Users
'Til everything is gone

If I gave you a gun with one bullet
For the honor left so far behind
Would you think what you've willed to your offspring
For nothing unto nothing consigned

Use it wisely
Use it wisely ... go on
Reap your harvest, Wise Users
'Til everything is gone

And yes, I believe there is beauty
And yes, I believe in truth
And in the seemingly infinite hunger
Of humans for destroying them both
Use it wisely
Use it wisely ... go on
Reap your harvest, Wise Users
'Til everything is gone

Sun Green by Neil Young and Crazy Horse (Greendale album):
Sun Green started makin' waves
On the day that Grandpa died
Speakin' out against anything
Unjust or packed with lies
She chained herself to a statue of an eagle
In the lobby of Power Co.

And started yelling through a megaphone,
"There's corruption on the highest floor."
Suits poured out of elevators
"You're all dirty."

Phoneheads began to speak
"You can't trust any of them."
Security couldn't get her down
She was welded to the eagle's beak.

Sun Green leaned into that megaphone, said,
"Truth is all I seek."
Security brought in some blow torches
News cameras recorded her speech,
"When the city is plunged into darkness
by an unpredicted rolling blackout

The White House always blames the governor
Saying the solution is to vote him out."
On top of that great bronze eagle
Sun's voice was loud and clear. She said,
"Power Co's working with the White House
to paralyze our state with fear."
Burning the midnight oil, whilst I still can.
