I would have to say the album "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd, especially the song "Wish You Were Here", and "Welcome To The Machine"
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pink Floyd, Welcome To The Machine', '
')
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
Where have you been?
It's alright we know where you've been.
You've been in the pipeline, filling in time,
Provided with toys and 'Scouting for Boys'.
You brought a guitar to punish your ma,
And you didn't like school, and you
know you're nobody's fool,
So welcome to the machine.
Welcome my son, welcome to the machine.
What did you dream?
It's alright we told you what to dream.
You dreamed of a big star,
He played a mean gituar,
He always ate in the Steak Bar.
He loved to drive in his Jaguar.
So welcome to the Machine.
This song is about a boy sick of school, drops out, buys a giutar, and attempts to make it as a rock star. Welcome to the machine, (the daily grind). You are a machine. Get up, go to work, go to bed, repeat.
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skys from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade
Your heros for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
This song is about Thermonuclear War. The earth has been destroyed, No green trees are left, because they have been either singed to a crisp during the blast, or have died of radiation sickness. No people are left, as the Nuclear War killed everyone. You have no idea if this is heaven, or hell. There is no people, but you have the whole earth to yourself. Everything has been obliterated in the giant inferno. The atmosphere has been destroyed by radiation, the very air its self is radioactive. The last 2 people on earth, trapped in holocaust, with no hope of bettering their situation, and living with the same fear, "Am I going to die today? What will kill me?" I miss the old world of green. Wish you were here, wish you were here.
