General interest discussions, not necessarily related to depletion.

And another, more topical one:

FAITHLESS LYRICS

Mass Destruction

(Whether long range weapon or suicide bomber
A wicked mind is a weapon of mass destruction
Whether you're soar away SUN or BBC1
Misinformation is a weapon of mass destruc
You could a Caucasian or a poor Asian
Racism is a weapon of mass destruction
Whether inflation or globalization
Fear is a weapon of mass destruction)

My dad came into my room holding his hat
I knew he was leaving,
he sat on my bed told me some facts, son.
I have a duty, calling on me
You and your sister be brave my little soldier
And don't forget all I told ya
Your the mister of the house now remember this
And when you wake up in the morning give ya momma a kiss
Then I had to say goodbye

In the morning woke momma with a kiss on each eyelid,
Even though I'm only a kid
Certain things can't be hid
Momma grabbed me
Held me like I was made of gold
But left her inner stories untold
I said, momma it will be alright
When daddy comes home, tonight

[CHORUS]

Whether Halliburton or Enron or anyone
Greed is a weapon of mass destruction

We need to find courage, overcome
Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction
Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction
Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction

The skin under my chin
is exploding, again.
I'm getting stress from some other children.
I'm holding it in, we taking sides, like a politian
an if I get friction we get to fightin.
I defend my dad he's the best of all men
an whatever he's doin he's doin the right thing.
Its frightenin but it makes me mad, why do all
of these people seem to hate my dad?
an if that ain't enough, now I've got these spots.
I go to sleep every night with my stomach in knots.
and whats more I can hear Mama next door
explore the radio for reports of war.
and all we ever seem to do is hide the tears,
seems Daddy been gone for years.
But he was right, now I'm geared up for the fight
an he would be proud of me if Daddy came home tonight.

[CHORUS]

My story stops here, lets be clear
This scenario is happening everywhere
And you ain't going to nirvana or farvana
You're coming right back here to live out your karma
With even more drama than previously, seriously
Just how many centuries have we been
waiting for someone else to make us free
And we refuse to see
That people overseas suffer just like we
Bad leadership and ego's unfettered and free
Who feed on the people they're supposed to lead
I don't need good people to pray and wait
For the lord to make it all straight
There's only now, do it right.
Cos I don't want your daddy, leaving home tonight

[CHORUS]
Whether Halliburton or Enron or anyone
Greed is a weapon of mass destruction

We need to find courage, overcome
Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction
Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction
Inaction is a weapon of mass destruction

Faithless

I Want More {Part I:}

Hey friend your misery bewilders me
How come you're never satisfied or gratified
Four walls n' a roof, electricity,
Stable mind, wife and child,
Hot and cold water to run anytime.
But still you whine:

I want more

A bum could rummage through ya bin
And live like a king
On just one crumb o'ya cake
N'ya say ya life needs fulfilling
Some would give anything to live like you
Shame your mind don't shine
Like your possessions do.
Whining, complaining all the time,
Don't see no rain on you
What side your bread is buttered on
If only you knew

What d'ya mean I want more?

I was told as a child,
"I want" never gets,
Learned to count my blessings
Long before I saw an abacus
So what ya family don't speak
At least they're alive
Show me a man without guilt
Or a soul that ain't lied
You don't know what ya got
Open your eyes, look around
Really, hear me you,
Ain't got no reason to be down

What d'ya mean I want more?

Friend what is it that you seek
What is it that you try to find
Someday I hope you realized
It shined in you all the time.
Hills to climb, sights to see, seas to cross,
Friends to make, hands to shake, the world is yours,
Foods to taste, sounds to hear, love to feel,
Seeds to sow, things to know, fish to reel,
Space to quiz, stones to lift, life's a gift

What d'ya mean
I want more

{I Want More part II:}

I want more
I want some
And then some
And do you know what I wanna hear?

I want more
I want some more
And then some
I want more

You know how I love that stuff

I want more
The waiting's been so long, so long.
I want more
Been so long

I want more

More oneness, less categories,
Open hearts, no strategies.
Decisions based upon faith and not fear.
People live right now and right here.
I want a wisdom that wise men revere.

I want more

THE Peak Oil Song Thread (merged)

Unread postby EnergySpin » Wed 06 Jul 2005, 20:40:31

I was listening to online radio ... and the following song from the movie "Great Expectations" was playing.
Title - Life In Mone, Artisti - Mono
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')The stranger sang a theme
From someone else’s dream
The leaves began to fall
And no one spoke at all
But I can’t seem to recall
When you came along
Ingenue

Ingenue
I just don’t know what to do

The tree-lined avenue
Begins to fade from view
Drowning past regrets
In tea and cigarettes
But I can’t seem to forget
When you came along
Ingenue

Ingenue
I just don’t know what to do
Ingenue
I just don’t know what to do
Ingenue
I just don’t know what to do
Ingenue
I just don’t know what to do
Ingenue (fade out)

Connecting the dots:
"The stranger sang a theme" Collin Campbell, the Irish!
"The leaves began to fall" to become biofuel!!!
"From someone else’s dream" Hubbert's dream I guess
"And no one spoke at all": well no one but ASPO and the others
" I cant seem to recall when you came along" we will only know for sure when it hits us!!!
"I just don’t know what to do" -> Appropriately describes the reaction to PO right?
"Drowning past regrets In tea and cigarettes" Initial reaction to PO
"The tree-lined avenue Begins to fade from view" -> yeap no more burbs

Another Song that could very well be the Post Oil Song
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')nd so we sail towards the dawn
Joining those who gently mourn for you
It's only because of you
Friends may come and friends may go
The only friend I need to know is you
It's only because of you
Mighty castles, lonely kings
Hear the ragged children sing it's you
It's only because of you
He who smiles at lofty schemes
Stems the tide of broken dreams is you
It's only because of you
It's only because of you

And when the storms have died away
Only truth will live to say it's you
It's only because of you
And when the darkness flies away
Only love will shine to say it's true
It's only because of you
It's only because of you

Only Because Of You Lyrics
by Roger Hodgson

Funny how the primed mind can find hidden connections in the world.
Back to work now all of you

"Here is a scale.
Weigh it out and you will find, easily,
more than sufficient doubt
that these colors, you see were picked in advance
by some careful hand with an absolute concept of beauty.

They are smeared
and these blurs
come in random order
to color the eyes of your former lovers.

Hers were green like July,
except when she cried they were red.

Now I know a disease that these doctors can't treat.
You contract it the day you accept
all you see is a mirror
and a mirror is all it can be.
A reflection of something we're missing.

And language just happened.
It was never planned.
And it's inadequate to describe
where I am in the room of my house
where the light has never been
waiting for this day to end.

And these clocks keep unwinding
and completely ignore everything that we hate or adore.
Once the page of a calendar is turned it's no more.
So tell me then, what was it for?
Oh tell me, what was it for?"

It's a good song and the lyrics are somewhat cryptic.

If you like that one, I can give you a list of other great songs by Bright Eyes (well, they're all great, but some are better than others...especially for people not familliar with the band)

In no particular order:

First Day Of My Life
Take It Easy (Love Nothing)
Scale, a Mirror, and These Indifferent Clocks
Attempt to Tip the Scales
We Are Nowhere And It's Now
Train Under Water
Bowl Of Oranges
You Will. You? Will. You? Will. You? Will (strange title so just type Bright Eyes and it will be one of the most popular songs)

Conor Oberst (the lead singer) doesn't have the world's greatest voice, but he is one of the best song writers out there. If you really listen to the lyrics, it's very poetic stuff.

But I'm not the most unbiased source...

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

One off my latest album...

Unread postby JohnLudi » Fri 29 Jul 2005, 18:08:03

It's called SUV:

It’s all going to go away
so use up all you can today
Hoard all the manna of progress you find,
suck it all down ‘til it makes you go blind

You were drinking your ambrosia and feeding on the fat
as the dinner bell of plenty started ringing flat.
You were basking in the sweetness of luxury and leisure,
wading in the excrement of unconscionable pleasure

Buy a thing, another thing, and then some things to house them,
eat the leaves and gnaw the roots and suck the juicy stems.
Frivolous and carefree, living second to second…
(the skeletal hand of the future now beckons).

Spend your way to nowhere with debts you’ll never manage
Soulless and rapacious and mindless of the damage
Driving towards the better life (always one purchase farther)
down a road paved with all the lives our countries bartered

(C) Driving by in my SUV.

The worlds is a playground for your appetites,
as long as it feels good it must be right.
And little dark people are working so hard
so you can max out your fat credit card.

You have hungers and desires the past could not imagine
and you don’t see how your consumption fans the fires of famine.
Images flicker on the screen that speak of desperation
caused by the sick desires of a fat decadent nation.

(C) Watch them die on my big TV.

Cheery, isn't it?

I don't know why but I think of PO when I hear Durran Duran's Come Undone.

Mine, immaculate dream, made breath and skin, I’ve been waiting for you,
Signed, with a home tattoo, happy birthday to you was created for you.

(can’t ever keep from falling apart.. at the seams)
(can’t I believe you’re taking my heart.. to pieces)

Ahh, it’ll take a little time, might take a little crime to come undone
Now we’ll try to stay blind, to the hope and fear outside,
Hey child, stay wilder than the wind
And blow me in to cry.

Who do you need?
Who do you love?
When you come undone.

Lou-ah, Lou-ah --> Up the front side of the curve, party on.
Whoa, whoa --> plateau, some trepidation
We-gah-go --> down-side; ashes, ashes, we all fall down.

Here is one from the time of the last energy crisis - though cyptic it still has resonance:

Machine Messiah

(Downes, Horn, Howe, Squire, White)

Part I

Run down a street
Where the glass shows
That summer has gone
Age, in the doorways
Resenting the pace of the dawn.
All of them standing in line
All of them waiting for time.
From time, the great healer,
The machine-Messiah
Is born.

Cables that carry the life
To the cities we build
Threads that link diamonds of life
To the satanic mills
Ah, to see in every way
That we feel it every
Day, and know that
Maybe we'll change
Offered the chance
To finally unlearn our lessons
And alter our stance.

Part II

Friends make their way into systems of chance
(reply- friends make their way of escape into systems of chance)
Escape to freedom I need to be there
Waiting and watching, the tables are turning
I'm waiting and watching
I need to be there.

I care to see them walk away
And, to be there when they say
They will return.

Machine, Messiah
The mindless
Search for a higher
Controller
Take me to the fire
And hold me
Show me the strength of your
Singular eye.

Part III

History dictating symptoms of ruling romance
Claws at the shores of the water upon which we dance
All of us standing in line
All of us waiting for time
To feel it, all the way
And to be there when they
Say they know that
Maybe we'll change
Offered the chance
To finally unlearn our lessons
And alter our stance.

Machine, machine Messiah.
Take me into the fire

Hold me, machine Messiah
And show me
The strength of your singular eye.
