There's not going to be a dieoff.

There'll only be a minor dieoff and yeah, I'll most likely be fine.

There'll be a dieoff but I'm make it because... (perhaps I'll post why)

No idea if I will survive, but I am sure as hell going to try. Wants do not save me from stray bullets, or aimed ones.

There will be a dieoff, and I probably won't "make it".

Oh, I will for a time. But the percentages build up. After the tenth, or twenty-fifth, or hundredth firefight, one's luck runs out. Thus will it be with me.

But on the bright side, it beats being surrounded by [s]vultures[/s] relatives feigning sorrow as they wonder whether they were mentioned in the will.

Of course they'll be mentioned. Just not politely. 8)

I'll make it, at least longer than many others.

Why?

I voted that I probably won't make it.

Why?

No one gets out of here alive anyway.

I "won't make it" a lot longer than some, however.

Well, I meant "make it" to a ripe old age of natural cause (or self-selected ones like heart attack or lung cancer if you prefer).

I can only hope.

I'm hoping that I'm mentally prepared well enough not to panic, but I have no illusions about how "soft" I am.

I am in a very good location, it might help me survive longer than some.

I am in iffy health as it is (diabetes, high blood pressure, likely heart problems). In THIS society/civilization, I have limited $ funds. Plus, between my age and health probs, I'm unlikely to be approved for insurance. If someone DOES approve me, the premiums and deductible (which I have to pay before the insurance kicks in) will be beyond my capacity to spend/maintain.

And that is where I am in the Business As Usual setup we know today. When TSHIF, and BAU isn't possible cuz, well, TS has HIF, things will get even worse. By the time dieoffs start in the USA, I'll be well-set-up to be among the early victims swept up by this (hopefully) natural culling.

So no, I'm not gonna make it. But then, by the time the excess population has been eliminated, it'll be obvious that MOST of us humans didn't/won't make it. So I'm hardly alone.

The honest recognize that they won't survive. At the same time, it's equally honest, in a different sense of that word, to try to survive through all the measures we discuss on this site.

Belief in one's indefinite personal survival no matter what is part of the general delusion that's got us into this fix in the first place.

If TS actually does HTF I probably won't "make it" (whatever that means) because I'll be so old by then I won't see any point in putting up a fight.

And who wants to go on in a post-SHTF world anyway? Everything will be thoroughly fucked, people will be behaving like the bad guy characters in an apocalypse movie, and prospects for a better life will be essentially non-existent.

Better to just get out of the way and let everybody else make out as best they can.

You can't assume you'll be that old by then, Zardoz, unless you're plenty old already.

It's only human nature to assume that collapse will occur when it's convenient for us, and at some safely distant point in the future, but I wouldn't count on it.

One needs to be constantly skeptical of the conclusions our human nature steers us toward.

I voted "minor dieoff". It's been debated endlessly in other topics, but I haven't found a convincing argument that "oil shortage=blood in the streets". I expect first major impact of PO in 3 to 5 years, major depression in 5 to 10, and maybe a sustainable new economy twenty or thirty years after that. Nothing scientific about my opinion, just my impression after two months of obsessively mining this site for some hard evidence or at least consensus for what is coming, and when. During a depression prepare to be ruled by a fascist police state here in the US. Hardly a stretch if you read the newspaper lately. We may witness "controlled die-off", make sure your government thinks you are useful! [smilie=adora.gif]

I'll make it (so will my 3 kids). I've made preps, my best friend's family has 40 acres and her parents are the original survivalists and if we need to bug off I have some place to go with a population of 200 farmers and 22 acres there.

I was also raised in the mountains and from the age of 8 we were taught survival skills in winter. We'll be fine. I would rather that we not have as many problems as you envision. Mind you our provinces don't have the populations of one of your american cities.

Have you read this book? It might convince you. Of course, there's already plenty of blood in the streets of Baghdad.

I have not read "Overshoot" yet but thanks for the link, I just purchased it!

However, is it possible to concede that we are in overshoot without agreeing that major violent dieoff is imminent? The violence in Iraq is a walk in the park compared to the "zombie horde" doomer scenario. I am not trying to say there will be no violence, just that it will not be a major cause of death for those of us living in industrialized societies. I expect malnutrition, lack of adequate health care, infant mortality, poor sanitation, etc. to be much more significant as a cause of death in the coming decades.

I'm convinced for quite a ways out it's going to be the haves and the have nots. I'd rather be a have than a have not so that's where my intentions lie at this point. ::shrug::
