$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('killJOY', 'I')t doesn't matter how much one prepares, because if one's neighbors haven't prepared, then it's all for nought.
Then you'll just have to get your neighbors on-board, no?
The greatest asset in almost any scenario that unfolds won't be weapons, it won't be hoards of freeze-dried food, it won't even be specialized survival knowledge and tools. It will be community, and working things out together.
My neighbor to the north just gave me 100 bales of old hay for making raised beds. Earlier this year, I helped him muck and feed his horses when he had a hernia operation. My neighbor to the east just gave me his slash piles, left from milling wood for a new barn, which I'll use for firewood, berming, mulch, and compost. Late last year, I helped him clean up some other slash on his property. They both are incredulous -- and curious -- why I don't just burn stuff, instead of using the nutrients. We have them over for pot-luck dinners.
Are my neighbors prepared to survive alone, as most of you seem to be planning for? No way. Are they prepared to listen to me when I explain how they must start changing their lives? Absolutely.
All you rugged individualists are prepared to run through your ammunition on zombie hoards. I'm prepared to stand by my neighbors, like the final scene in
Witness, if there's trouble. I've got a big bell in back that they all can hear, and we'll all owe each other enough favors that they'll all come if anyone starts ringing.
