Re: Cheaper fuel helps GM SUV sales surge

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('gg3', 'W')hat I have nothing but contempt for, is the vanity vehicle whose purpose is to pamper its usually solo occupant and intimidate other users of the road, while navigating the twice-daily stop-and-go over perfectly smooth pavements. Pampering is for infants, and intimidation is for hoodlums. People who engage in that type of behavior deserve the darwinization they are most certainly going to get. And those who enable them, by which I mean the current crop of major automakers, deserve likewise.

I spent some time in Florida late last winter, and the area near where I stayed had an abundance of the 1 ton, dual wheel pickups. Most of these were new and dolled up with all kinds of chrome, fancy rims, running boards with lights, flags painted on the back window. Really, some of these trucks were worth as much as the shacks some of these folks lived in. I hope I do not sound elitist, but I just can't figure what would possess somebody to put so much of their income into their truck, which will lose value, versus their home which does not. And, to suffer the pitiful fuel mileage the "doolies" provide.
People are hard to figure. I wonder what a three year old doolie goes for?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('The_Toecutter', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')e shouldn't blame the car companies. If people didn't buy SUVs/trucks, they'd stop making them tomorrow. They're just whores, nothing more.
This is all on us.

Yet when the public wanted electric vehicles in the 1990s, the car companies refused to even offer them for sale. The market for them was huge, 12-18% of new car sales with a 95% confidence interval, in the state of California. But they make less profit per vehicle than a large SUV(or even a normal car, for that matter).
What the consumer wants to buy and what the car companies want them to buy are often two totally different things. The car companies will make the latter.

Fair points, particularly on the electric car. But at the end of the day, no one can put a gun to the American consumer's collective head and make them buy a truck or SUV. We have free choice and the responsibility that comes with that free choice. We may not be able to buy electric cars today, but that doesn't mean that the ridiculous SUV is the only other option. There are plenty hyundais, kias, and Cooper Mini's out there. :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('The_Toecutter', 'I') didn't mean for my reaction to be misinterpreted. I was by no means accusing you of claiming that it was a significant gain. My comment was towards General Motors.
Don't mind me. I'm just pissed that we have all these solutions to this problem around us, but through somewhat clandestine means, we don't have access to them.

 Yeah, the Trilateral commission with the black helicopters on the grassy knoll are the ones who are keeping the 100 MPG carburetor and the Mr. Fusion energy converter off the market.
Why can't people on this board get their minds around the free market? If people bought more cramped, slow, high fuel economy cars, the world’s manufacturers would make more of them. I for one drive a large, comfortable car that averages about 29 MPG. Why would I want something slower, less comfortable, less safe, and much less useful to get a few more MPG?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('gg3', 'I') would not object if someone went around painting on those vehicles, the words "Stop!, you're killing me!", which was one of the slogans of the enviro group in John Brunner's quasi-prophetic sci fi novel The Sheep Look Up.
Paint it on with tempra paint of course, which is water soluable and nontoxic, and can be washed off with a hose (hey it's not vandalism if there's no actual damage!). At least it will get the morons pissed off for a few minutes, which might get them to think.

I wouldn't bother.
Post peak, when the angry mobs are roaming the streets looking for someone to blame, the SUV owners will be among the first to be strung up.

GM targets 2009 launch of new Hummer

Unread postby BrazilianPO » Thu 09 Nov 2006, 00:01:00

"DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp. will likely launch a new Hummer truck in 2009, the head of the niche brand told Reuters on Wednesday.
"The new product will have unparalleled off-road capabilities," Hummer General Manager Martin Walsh said. "Like our current Hummers it would be recognizable from a distance."
The brand currently has two models: the H2 and H3. It stopped production of the H1 in June.
Earlier this year, GM's activist investor Kirk Kerkorian urged the automaker to consider spinning off Hummer, which began as a high-mobility vehicle for the U.S. military.
But GM executives have argued Hummer is key to its strategy as it tries to recover from a $10.6 billion 2005 loss, reverse a market share slide and return to profit in the U.S. market."

Great new product for the urban traffic! Just what we need, more of these monsters. At least they will make great makeshift campervans when it becomes too expensive to drive them. I hope Peak Oil hits GM really hard!

Oh please, like anybody uses their SUV for off-road.
Oh wait!!! Maybe he meant what you meant???

Living in them is "off-road", isn't it?

In the third financial quarter, GM’s cash position declined by $2.5 billion. Cash flow from its automotive operations was a negative $5.1 billion.

No need to get puffy over consumer products you don't like. The market will do its magic.

TJ: right on target. The market will take care of those dinosaurs and the dinosaur that makes them.
Now let us hope the new Democratic Congress does not indulge in a welfare-state bailout of GM when the market pulls the flush handle.
As for the new Hummer, why anyone would buy a vehicle named after an act that got a President impeached, is beyond me.

Unless they've figured out a way to grind up dead Iraqis and pour them into gas tanks, the H3 is going to bomb, and take what's left of GM with it. They won't be able to GIVE those things away.

Unless you shorted GM over a year ago, you are in a world of financial hurt right now!!
What's all of you GM bashers excuse for the Toyota FJ Cruiser, Land Cruiser, Tundra (the new one will be huge!), Sequoia, GX470, etc? Those Whale Killers sure are smart, building more and more giant, gas sucking trucks and SUV's. But when GM does the same thing, they are dumb as rocks!

I guess for me, it is GM sentiment such as
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')M executives have argued Hummer is key to its strategy as it tries to recover from a $10.6 billion 2005 loss, reverse a market share slide and return to profit in the U.S. market.

I admit I don't know for sure, but I would bet that the Land Crusier etc are not seen by Toyota management as the key to Toyota's success going forward.

Precisely.
Sure, the other companies offer their own versions of monstrously inefficient behemoths, but only GM (and to a lesser extent Ford) view them as flagship product lines. Not even Chrysler is as bad as they are (although they are pretty bad).
