$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mattduke', 'T')he Party has been proven to kill by the hundreds of thousands. The advantage the party has is that they are willing to think what to ethical citizens is unthinkable.

Thats a little over the top, I think. The President doesn't need for the Party to win the election in '06.

Rep upsides for a Dem victory in '06:
1.) Bush can blame them for the coming rehikes in gas prices after they fail to open ANWR.
2.) Bush can push the whole empire building mess to the right by causing democrats to choose military spending over social programs.
3.) Dems likely will win seats in '06 that they could never hope to hold for more than one cycle.
4.) A Dem congress gives the Reps in '08 a foil in order to finesse/refine the public's understanding of their positions.
5.) Dems may not be able to restrain themselves and could push for investigations, gun control, tax hikes, etc; all of which would doom them to another decade of powerlessness.
6.) A Dem congress has no chance of stopping an attack on Iran.
7.) Some on the right had started thinking in terms of having a "right" to eternal power, no matter how much money they spend. A little wake up call before '08 could be helpful.

Granted, I don't think they'd (Rs) lose on purpose, but from Bush's perspective, its no big deal..

About the only real disadvantage, is the Dems might be able to claim some credit for the deficit falling, even though its already doing that.

AgentR,

I do think the Repugnicans are going to lose on purpose. For the reasons you stated they have nothing really to fear from losing. Most importantly, however, they need someone to serve as a foil for the failure of the null hypothesis regarding war with Iraq and Iran. They need the Dems to be the ones that push for a pullout and for that pullout to be a disaster.

It is a long sad road when you consider we could just let them have their oil to industrialize themselves instead. That way the citizens of the ME could learn to use capitalism to sort their problems out.

Isn't the Kittyhawk due to be decommissioned in 2008?

I would suggest that BushCo. isn't all that upset, behind the scenes, that NK is making this much noise.
It is a great distraction. While everyone is looking east, the taskforces are positioning in the gulf.

And more ships heading there:
The herald

I found this to be extremely worring news, this operations cost a big deal or resources and with an army overstreched, US and UK cannot afford to burn money and resources like that. Reason says that if they attack Iran, they WILL block the Ormuz straight, and there will be another ramifications (refineries in Saudi Arabia for instance), no one can be as crazy as to contemplate this, but they still keep piling up hardware there...
