That reminds me of the Russian joke:

Man goes into a bakers and buys a loaf of bread and says:
"5 roubles? That's very expensive. The baker up the road is only charging 2 roubles. Why the difference?"

The baker then says "The difference is that I have bread on the shelves"

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')inally his wife had to call around.

Umm...maybe he should have called around to begin with, instead of driving around wasting gas?

Shortages have also been reported in the Southwest. (Parts of Texas have been hit really bad.) Basically, anywhere they are switching over to ethanol. In some states, only the large cities are affected.

NY has no shortages, because they switched over to ethanol last year.

That's nothing. After Katrina, in my hometown some guy got ran over during a drive-off. I couldn't find a link for it or even a story, just what a friend of mine told me. I'm not sure if he died or not though.

But this is nothing yet. I'm wondering what will go down at $5 gas.

Why on earth do some gas stations even allow unpaid pumping anymore? THis shouldn't even BE a problem if some service station owners would demand their payment upfront before releasing the goods.

This is not rocket science.

Maybe the unwashed masses are afraid to use their debit cards at the pumps... me, I'm the vanguard of the cashless society. I haven't been inside a gas station in months.

People robbed gas stations when gas was cheap. It has always been a mostly cash business which attacts plenty of robbers.

True, but this is more of a man bite dog kinda story. Let put it this way I'll be scared if Wal-mart associates start shooting at shop lifters.

Here in Oregon, we are forbidden from pumping our own gas. I haven't touched a gas pump in months. And all payment is made upfront. No chance of idiocy here. Any robbing needs to be done before the criminal makes it to the gas station.

Then be afraid because Wal-mart associates have killed shop lifters in the past and often in horribly painfull ways.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pea-jay', 'H')ere in Oregon, we are forbidden from pumping our own gas.
it is (or was) the same in New Jersey. why? seems stupid and a waste of time. Is this just job-creation? If it is, it is toxic.

Ummm... "pump your own" only started after the oil shocks in the 70s as a way to reduce costs. There used to be these things called "station attendants" who actually pumped your gas for you. They also did things like check your oil and fluids, clean the windows and check the air in the tires. That's back when they were referred to as service stations...

Here in WI, we have the system that allows you to pay inside AFTER you've pumped your gas. I talked to a cop that said they say its BAD for business if they were to make you pay first. Give it time boyz. We'all be ridin dirty in time.

Re: Local gas station anticipating shortage (TX)

Postby oil4u » Tue 06 Jun 2006, 20:52:28

Wow! Haven't seen anything like that here in Ontario, Canada, but based on the Weekly US supply report, Valero fire and spill plus your Memorial day weekend, I wonder if there was a very steep draw down of Unleaded gas inventory?

May 26 report

Gasoline production remained relatively flat last week, compared to the previous
week, averaging 9.2 million barrels per day. Total motor
gasoline imports (including both finished gasoline and gasoline blending
components) last week averaged nearly 1.6 million barrels per day, the third
highest weekly average ever.

Total motor gasoline inventories
increased by 0.8 million barrels last week, but remain in the lower half of the
average range.

I suspect nothing of it. It's just a ploy to get more money out of you :). But it's probably just the refinery. The ethanol thingy is so old that I'm pretty positive it's all been phased in.
