Yeah, I agree. In many ways - not just charities, but globalization in general - we have made people in other countries dependent on us. Mexico used to be self-sufficient in their staple, corn. But we've flooded their market with cheap, fossil-fuel subsidized corn, and forced the farmers out of business. What will they do when we start making our surplus corn into ethanol instead of selling it to Mexico?

I also fear that peak oil will undo the progress in population control we have made over the past 30 years. The mortality rate will rise again, encouraging large families. Rural people are also more likely to have large families, so if people leave the city to go back to the farm, we can expect higher birth rates. Farmers need the free labor kids provide; city dwellers don't.

Well, whew! I'm SO glad Bill is on the case now.

He'll figure out what to do. Maybe franchise sustainable community campuses all across America where the blessed can take great joy in their uni-verse.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pfish', 'A') person's opnion that I would value more than Bill Gates would be his bridge partner, Warren Buffet. Has Buffet said anything about PO? He has about as good of grasp on the future as anybody.

Well, he's been buying silver since the late 90s.

Notwithstanding the Gates bashing... I believe that this is a pretty significant event. This signifies that at least some of top echelon of world business leaders is getting into the mind set of the existence of Peak Oil and a coming energy crisis.

I have to believe that Gates is discussing this in his poker matches with Buffet and others.

Awareness filters from the top down. As these heavyweights start shifting their fortunes around to position themselves for this, people are going to take notice and awareness is going to increase.

oh god. That link to the rm video of some retarded portugese pundit interviewing bill gates made me want to stab my eyes out, lob off my ears and jump out my window.

Bill Gates is perhaps one of the most dull, uninspiring humans that walks the earth. He makes Proust seem like Guns and Roses.

phew...

I'm glad I didn't watch the entire thing... maybe later I'll capture it into a better format and then I can jump around it easier (without it freezing up) to see if he mentions good 'ole Matt, perhaps one of the most responsible business men walking around--at least it seems like he cares.

Mr Gates just sounds like some 9 year old zit addled geek who suffers from clinical depression.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Novus', 'I')f Bill Gates cares about oil he should make his next Windows OS more efficient on older hardware. Everytime a new Windows comes out you have to buy a whole new computer. New computers cost about 15 barrels of oil to make. Bill Gates has the power to make a lot of change in the world and I am not talking about his charity foundation. He could make a lot of money if Microsoft went in the direction of reusing old PCs.

Bill will be living in the same world as us, and it is going to take enourmous resources to keep himself isolated, this won't last long, soon he will be homeless and wandering and everyone in the world will recognize him, that will be interesting.

And with his clout and money Bill will survive the first few months, so at some time in the near future , bill is going to be homeless. I may meet up with him as I try to find camping spots along lake washington. (We can see his house from our boat.) I think peak oil is good payment for windows XP development. - dumb thing crashes every so often and if a drive fails they make you buy a new copy.

post peak there will not be one XP version running heh heh heh, nor the newer windows because no one will have power, yes, but you also can't licence tose over the phone anymore either. When microsift goes, no more installation of programs XP and above.
Linux will rule the world.

Never thought of that , did you?

I have a proposal for him. If he reads this site ( :P ), he can pm me and I will give him the required information for giving me a share. I will put them to good use by buying a BIG piece of land and lead a life as a hunter/gatherer.

what people don't realize is that the rich
are rich ONLY because they are PROPED UP by the money
of the 'poor'.

Gates is rich BECUASE the world has a lot of people.
I mean he makes WINDOWS OS, if the world was only 500 million people instead of 6.4 billion he would rack in MUCH LESS MONEY, but the developement cycle and resources spent to make the OS would NOT decrease. So therefore Gates is RICH becuase he is lucky to live in a world with so much people. If the world had 64 billion people he would be 10X as rich, and he wouldn't have to DO ANYTHING EXTRA except burn more CDs at the rate the Feds print Paper Money....

This is a pyramid scheme and those on TOP are always the FEW and the RICH. By the structure of a pyramid, the bottom is ALWAYS the VAST MAJORITY of PEOPLE and this so happens to be the 'Poor'. And it just so happens that (like a pyramid) it is the poor that is the foundation and base that props up and supports the rich. Without the poor the rich cannot exist in a vaccuum.
Wealth does not exists in a vaccuum, REAL people have to do REAL work to make REAL value all to had it over to sharks like Gates and Trump and Cruise.

Take Tom Cruise for example. Late night I was reading TIme magazine about Mi:III, and it said how the other two movies MADE
386 million dollars. How the crap does movies MAKE money???

I have yet to understand that.....

If anything, movies ABSORB and CONSUME MONEY. People put there hard earned money to watch a crappy movie about a so called bad ass actor trying to portray a spy acting like he saving the world. That JJ Abrabms guy is gay too, when PO hits he's bank account will TANK.

Mi:III CONSUMED/DESTROYED 386 million dollars. Wow, Cruise gets paid to help fuck up the world, no wonder he is in scientology crap, they are all morons.

How the FUCK is gates supposed to fly a private plane post peak oil? You think they will keep an airport running just for HIM? You think Trump can afford to pay the DOT to keep the roads in working order so he can drive his limo around town??
You think Cruise will still be rich when no one can afford $20 to watch a new movie ($10 for the moive, $10 for gas) ????
The rich people forget they are ONLY rich BECAUSE OF THE POOR!
Wealth does NOT exists in a vacuum, we the commoners are propping them up! Foolish us! What benefit do we get? NADA

And yet the mob, all the mob cares about is which celebrity is fucking who and who is getting pregnant, while they are being ripped off by those exactly people..... this world is full of retarded people.

People spend big money to buy name brands, yet they not realize that they are PAYING the name brand companies to ADVERTISE their product!!!! (think about it...) Why buy Name brands? They cost MUCH more and its all about hype, about populairty, about mob thinking, mob mentiuality, in the end the mob no realize that they are being played like the god damn fool they really are....

Its a gaint pyramid scheme. Just remember that the bottom is needed to support the top. When the bottom goes to shit, what do you think will happen to the top???

Hi amps,

but who doesn't know this shit already? What can you do when you are born into this system which cannot be changed without something major happening? One person definitely cannot change this shit that we call reality. It is going to take a dark liquid named oil to do that for us, and we should be thankful.

You are an anarchist like myself, so nice to know you.

I will refrain from quoting bible verses, but will say that is part of the decietfullness of riches spoken in the bible.

Gate's money will be worthless when he is unable to buy anything with it.

I suspect he will buy a self sustaining island or something like Mel Gibson did with his profits after the "Passion". Funny that his first movie just happened to be about Petrocollapse and his next movie is about the collapse of the Mayan civ.

Think he knows something the ignorant masses don't ?

THough my sentiments fall along the line of 12amps as well, my comments will be more for the moment...

Dear Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Steve Jobs and other Pacific NW& Nor Cal tech moguls;

Your firms have done amazing things over the past few decades and made many things possible that few had ever dreamed of. Along the way you and your firms became fabulously wealthy. Unfortunately there are challenges out there that there that will threaten every achievement that your firms have brought to us. With that in mind, my suggestion to you and your colleagues is use your new found fortunes to preserve technological civilization. Well the better aspects of it anyway... See, if we suffer a full scale civilization collapse, the stuff you and your firms do aren't going to be worth crap.

What good is tech if the electricity is hard to come by and know-how, resources and energy is lacking to replace the failed components and further inovate ? Who will be concerned about operating systems, routers or databases when most people will be fighting to stay warm in the winter, cool in the summer and fed all year long?

My suggestion is use your ample wealth to ensure every thing you need to keep functioning is attainable locally or regionally. But look beyond the tech world. Fund nacent industries that recycle/reuse the detrius of today's world. Support localization efforts in your region. Prod governments (let's face it money still talks) to redirect infrastructure investments into modes that have a long term future. Even educate your customers about the need to conserve.

It goes against your business model for sure, but really, what will 30 billion of inflated dollars buy you when your factories can't operate, users cant buy from you and the hungry and homeless clamor around your ample estates?? Protect your investments and your innovations by keeping a full scale collapse at bay. It may not work on a global scale, but some regions will undoubtly fare better.

Thanks in advance,
-greatful tech user.
