Oh my god, theres a story about the twin cities there...

Actually, I think the twin cities would be a LOT better off than, say, New York or something. For hundreds of miles in every direction there is farmland surrounding the twin cities...

Good start Jack. You need to expand it into a novel.

I don't think it's been mentioned, but if you like doomer fiction check out Frugal Squirrel or TB2K, they both have an extensive collection of amateur fiction, some of it very good, although not all peak oil related.

I just wanted to add my compliments, Jack. It was an especially nice touch mentioning how the doomers were ridiculed for pointing out the obvious---four years into the crisis! I agree with the others, please don't hesitate to expand upon your ideas.

Re: A Doomer’s Midsummer Nightmare

I just got back to this thread (I don't visit Open Discussion often), so I apologize to Chuck for the lateness! :)
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')here seem to be many in Denton that are PO aware, even besides yourself.

It may SEEM so, Chuck, but I personally haven't met any. A couple apparently tried to start a Meet-Up PO group, but that fell through. (As they met on Wednesdays, I couldn't have joined, anyway, but the whole thing fell flatter than a pancake, anyway.) I think there's a group in Plano, if you ever want to check that out. Me, I don't have a car (not because I'm PO aware, just that I never could afford another one after my one and only died in 1992).

A group DID actually have a showing of "The End of Suburbia" back in 2004; I am sooooo lucky to have been able to see it!

People here are like people everywhere: mostly sheeple, but even the potentially "wise" prefer/accept voluntary denial. What PO means (especially with GW and Climate Change thrown in) is just too inconceivable for people raised in during the Oil Party of the 20th Century. I see right now as the ocean rolling back to help out the incoming tsunami (i.e., people note that something's wrong, but just can't/won't grasp the enormity). When TSHTF, it's gonna be like the tsunami--hard, fast, devastating, merciless. Doesn't matter how slow/fast depletion's gonna be, or when the Actual Date of Peak is/was. Society and Economy are built on eggshells, stacked up domino-like, and will fall like dominos (or the infamous house of cards). Time's virtually up, even though things LOOK pretty much like they've "always" been. (I'm always amazed at how 20-30-40 years = always, in our silly human minds.)

I'm currently unemployed (for a salary, anyway, my time's filled with things I'm doing, none for $$), living off a small inheritance my dad left me last year. I shall soon seriously think of what happens next; there's little I can do about it, though. Before inheritance, I could only work jobs that barely--if that--kept my head above water; I've no reason to believe it will be any different (in fact, it's probably WORSE out there now!); just kind of trying to have faith that God loves his more foolish children (like me!). I do know that I've been given the intelligence and sense to come to realize what's going on; I think that might be of SOME help in the times ahead! Also, maybe some sort of bartering system might arise--exchanging the talents/items you have for other talents/items may be the only way some of us survive what's coming.

Doomer? Maybe. Trying to be realistic, sensible, and creative against a scenario that has little cornucopia with which to present anyone! I, too, thank Jack for his story--he seems to be writing from a realistic/sensible/creative point of view!
Glad this site, and other PO/GW/CC aware folks are dropping in here on a regular basis. It makes one feel less alone. Thanks for letting me vent.

And, Chuck? Getting out of Dallas in the next 12-18 months might be something to consider. Cities may seem to be good food/aid-distribution points, but they will quickly become too DANGEROUS for such things. Where you'd go--I don't know. Somewhere where there's enough capable people to become the basis for a community that wants to do more than just survive. Different posters here have worked toward their definition of that; some of them are likely to be right. Me, I'm staying put. Despite Denton being the SW Regional HQ for FEMA Telecommunications, I do sense the components for such a community are here; it's just that I don't know if the components will come together in time. But that's a worry we ALL have, no matter where we are. But cities and suburbs--that's just no good. Just saying.

Glad to talk to a fellow Texan, though! :-D

You missed out the effects of climate change, a bird flu pandemic, terror attacks and resource wars. :P

Only joking.

I'll add my name to the list of compliments. Good work.

PO TYPE TOPICS APPEARING DIRECT IN DREAMS

Unread postby galacticsurfer » Wed 15 Feb 2006, 06:35:20

I read a lot on PO, global warming and such and talk to my wife about it. After a while she had a dream where she saw the street we live without all the cars always driving along and parked everywhere and realized why in her dream. I just had a dream where I saw a couple of small elephants whose skin was really loose as if they were sick and as I was trying to find my house I stumbled across a coupld of big boats stuffed with hay like Noah's Ark. I think after reading this stuff long enough it penetrates into the subconscious. Obviously in this dream I am worried about global warming and destruction of environment but PO is obvioulsy a part of all that.

Is anyone else getting hints in their dreams on PO, global warming or other such topics?

Sex dreams and PO? what kind of body lotion does your dream woman use? Is it petroleum based?

If I dream of a gusher oil well at high pressure that is definitely more sex than PO dream. I think most wells are now like old men who can't get any sort of erection, unfortunately.

Now seriously.

Dream recall is a really good tool to deal with fear and such. Just wake up slowly and lay around a few minutes. Earlier more primitive cultures who had more contact with their subconscious trusted their dreams to give them direction. It is also possible to see the future in dreams or to solve problems as the day to day consciousness is "only the tip of the iceberg".

I have dreams of being chased by military type people in a bombed out city. Never had those before I knew of PO. BTW, I always give them the slip.

I have had dreams in which I have been telling people the production figures for the world's largest oil producers. Names such as Ghawar, Burgan, Canterell, Daqing and the North Sea and their respective production figures are being discussed. Something's got to give.
