What's the soundtrack to your peak oil awakening?

Postby RacerJace » Tue 10 Jan 2006, 07:12:13

I've always been a music lover and have had different music mark various times in my life like a soundtrack to my world and my experiences. Every time I hear certain songs I instantly reminisce of the time when that song had imprinted itself on my mind and what I was doing, what emotions I felt. It's quite profound.. for me anyway.

So I'm curious... what are people listening to as they discover and study the meaning of peak oil and what the future holds.?

For me it was initially marked by an attraction to the heavy metal group Mudvayne. (I'm a bit of a hard rock / heavy metal fan). Their following songs struck a chord with me:

Death Blooms
A World So Cold
Negative 1
Trapped In The Wake Of A Dream

Then my wife started getting frustrated with my angry music and I tried to find something else that resonated with my mood.

As I "matured" with the knowledge of peak oil (and I've still got a long way to go), I found these guys really fit the bill... Porcupine Tree. They could be described as a mixture of Pink Floyd, Supertramp and Alan Parsons, to me anyway. This song in particular has my present soundtrack number one: "Arriving Somewhere but not Here"...

Never stop the car on a drive in the dark Never look for the truth in your mother's eyes Never trust the sound of rain upon a river rushing through your ears

Arriving somewhere but not here

Did you imagine the final sound as a gun? Or the shattered windows of a car? Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear as you're fading out was a song?

All my designs simplified And all of my plans compromised All of my dreams sacrificed

Ever had the feeling you've been here before? Drinking down the poison the way you were taught Every thought from here on in your life begins and all you knew was wrong?

Did you see the red mist block your path? Did the scissors cut a way to your heart? Did you feel the envy for the sons of mothers tearing you apart?

Well, I'll lead off with the obligatory "It's the end of the world as we know it (and I feel fine)" by REM, although it's the title rather than the lyrics themselves that have any meaning really.

More interesting is a gem by the Talking Heads called "Nothing but Flowers". While it was written in the 80s, it sounds like David Byrne and co. were inspired by a Kunstler from the future. Here's the lyrics (please don't sue me RIAA)

"Here we stand
Like an Adam and an Eve
Waterfalls
The Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
The birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them
From the age of the dinosaurs
Cars have run on gasoline
Where, where have they gone?
Now, it's nothing but flowers

There was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers
you got it, you got it

We caught a rattlesnake
Now we got something for dinner
we got it, we got it

There was a shopping mall
Now it's all covered with flowers
you've got it, you've got it

If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower
you've got it, you've got it

Years ago
I was an angry young man
I'd pretend
That I was a billboard
Standing tall
By the side of the road
I fell in love
With a beautiful highway
This used to be real estate
Now it's only fields and trees
Where, where is the town
Now, it's nothing but flowers
The highways and cars
Were sacrificed for agriculture
I thought that we'd start over
But I guess I was wrong

Once there were parking lots
Now it's a peaceful oasis
you got it, you got it

This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
you got it, you got it

I miss the honky tonks,
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
you got it, you got it

And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
you got it, you got it

I dream of cherry pies,
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies
you got it, you got it

We used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries
you got it, you got it

This was a discount store,
Now it's turned into a cornfield
you got it, you got it

Don't leave me stranded here
I can't get used to this lifestyle"

There are several songs I like that sound relevant to peak oil:

Headlong, by Queen:

Headlong down the highway and you're rushing
Headlong out of control
And you think you're so strong
But there ain't no stopping and you can't stop rockin'
And there's nothin' you can, nothin' you can
Nothin' you can do about it

Money, money, by Liza Minelli:

Money makes the world go around, the world go around
The world go around, money makes the world go around
Of that we're really sure, [thrrr] on being poor

When you haven't any coal in the stove and you freeze in the winter
And you curse to the wind at your fate
When you haven't any shoes on your feet, your coat's thin as paper
And you look thirty pounds underweight
When you go to get a word of advice from the fat little pastor
He will tell you to love evermore
But when hunger comes a rap, rat-a-tat, rat-a-tat at the window
See our love flies out the door

I heard recently a funky seventies song that said again and again:

There is only so much oil in the ground.

Also, I've written a couple of songs myself on the subject of peak oil. The most relevant is called The Party's Over:

What do you want?
What do you need?
How do you do
to tell them apart?

When is the time
when there's no time left?
When is the time
when you've gotta go?

When is the time
to switch of the lights and go?
The party's over.
The party's over...
The party's over.

You don't need a car,
you don't need the keys,
you don't need to be
in anywhere else.

This is the time
to look for the time
that you've been wasting
all along.

This is the time to
switch off the lights and go.
The party's over.
The party's over...
The party's over.

interesting idea :)

I always associate different temporal events with some soundtrack that has subliminarly associated keywords and sounds associated inside it, and is also associated with other soundtracks that are associated with other events as defined by me, as a way to recall previous associations, for my particular thoughts only.

For me the the best kind of soundtrack for the night is intense electronic music (around 130~145 bpm) preferably without vocals (which avoids singing mentally, thus unfocusing) that allows to stay awake and keep on researching on any specific subject.

one of the association trees can be this:
rumble pack - the sliph
talamasca - overload
talamasca - capetown
infected mushroom - chaplin
alien project + astrix - israeli trance
infected mushroom - horus the chorus
Infected Holymen - desert storm
alien project - The First Revelation (Astrix Rmx)
shakta - lepton head (part 3)
paul oakenfold - swordfish soundtrack points (2:35>7:15, 12:36>20:00)
stevie wonder - superstitious
talamasca - beyond the mask
paul oakenfold - great wall cd2 - point 58:50
paul oakenfold - great wall cd1 - point 20:50
astrix - sex style
astrix - scientific reality
dead can dance - baraka soundtrack (slower)

enjoy :)

For all you doomers out there, you should listen to the brilliant King Crimson song "Epitaph". Not only is it lyrically perfect as a Peak Oil doomer soundtrack, but the instrumentation sets the mood well, especially with the creepy organ sound. The song is sure to send chills up your spine.

Lyrics for Epitaph by King Crimson
(Fripp/McDonald/Lake/Giles/Sinfield)

The wall on which the prophets wrote
Is cracking at the seams.
Upon the instruments if death
The sunlight brightly gleams.
When every man is torn apart
With nightmares and with dreams,
Will no one lay the laurel wreath
As silence drowns the screams.

Between the iron gates of fate,
The seeds of time were sown,
And watered by the deeds of those
Who know and who are known;
Knowledge is a deadly friend
When no one sets the rules.
The fate of all mankind I see
Is in the hands of fools.

Confusion will be my epitaph.
As I crawl a cracked and broken path
If we make it we can all sit back
and laugh.
But I fear tomorrow I'll be crying,
Yes I fear tomorrow I'll be crying

This is more the Doomer line of things, but given mankinds penchant for being stupid I think it fits. The song is very haunting and ironicly I was listening to it when I first started to read lifeaftertheoilcrash.com

Kingdom by VNV Nation

Our domain, this kingdom come
now godless lands whose ways are lost.
Without the strength to carry on.
All values lost all virtue none.
Did you think you would be saved
by burning flags to cleanse yourselves of shame?
Or are you afraid as you stare back at your face?
are you ashamed, are you afraid,
by destroying what the gods had made?
Did you think you would be saved?

I believe that we'll conceive
to make in hell for us a heaven.
A brave new world.
A promised land.
A fortitude of hearts and minds.
Until I see this kingdom is mine,
I'll turn the darkness into light.
I'll guide the blind.
My will be done until the day
I see this kingdom has been won.

No more the servants of the weak
devoid of thought or light to seek.
I'll leave no walls, no stone unturned.
Every tower to be razed to the dust from which it came.
None will be spared, no remnant saved.
Are you ashamed, are you afraid,
of the gods and idols you have made?
Did you think you would be saved
by the gods and idols you have made?

None will be saved.
None will be saved.

System of a Down -- it is most definitely a "doomer" band. The title of the band refers to the doom of the universe. Here's the first one -- pay attention to "eating seeds is a pastime activity" I think they are referring to "eating our seed corn"

SYSTEM OF A DOWN - Toxicity Lyrics
Conversion, software version 7.0
looking at life through the eyes of a tired hub
eating seeds as a pastime activity
the toxicity of our city, of our city
Now, what do you own the world?
how do you own disorder, disorder
Now somewhere between the sacred silence
Sacred silence and sleep
somewhere, between the sacred silence and sleep
disorder, disorder, disorder
More wood for the fires, loud neighbours
flashlight riveries caught in the headlights of a truck
eating seeds as a pastime activity
the toxicity of our city, of our city

Now, what do you own the world?
how do you own disorder, disorder
Now somewhere between the sacred silence
Sacred silence and sleep
somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep
disorder, disorder, disorder
Now, what do you own the world?
how do you own disorder, disorder
Now somewhere between the sacred silence
Sacred silence and sleep
somewhere, between the sacred silence and sleep
disorder, disorder, disorder
When I became the sun
I shone life into the man's hearts
When I became the sun
I shone life into the man's hearts

SYSTEM OF A DOWN - Bubbles Lyrics
Fish that don't drown,
Life in a bubble jungle,
I wouldn't frown,
Not short another chuckle,
Snake in the ground,
But I was in there for you,
Now leaving town,
Life in a bubble jungle.

Seeing you believing
Us adhering
We're the power struck.

Believing, then kneeling,
Appeasing,
The power struggle.

We're left with no arms,
Right in the power struggle,
We're left with no arms,
Right in the power struggle.

Wearing a crown,
Life in a bubble jungle,
Chasing a clown,
Not short another chuckle,
Snake in the ground,
But I was waiting for you,
Now we have found,
Life in a bubble jungle.

Seeing you believing
Us adhering
We're the power struck.

Believing, then keeling,
Appeasing,
The power struggle.

We're left with no arms,
Right in the power struggle,
We're left with no arms,
Right in the power struggle.
Left with no arms,
In the power struggle,
Left with no arms,
In the power struggle.

May I remind you,
May I remind you,
May I remind you.

May I remind you,
May I remind you,
May I remind you.

May I remind you,
May I remind you,
May I remind you,
May I remind you,
May I remind you,
May I remind you,
Your life is in a bubble jungle.

Seeing you believing
Us adhering
We're the power struck.
Believing, then keeling,
Appeasing,
The power struggle.

We're left with no arms,
Right in the power struggle,
We're left with no arms,
Right in the power struggle.
Left with no arms,
In the power struggle,
Left with no arms,
Right here in the power struggle.

This is my all time favorite System of a Down song, blasting out of my truck while I unload horse manure or dig raised beds. When he's saying "we don't give a f*ck about your wars" I'm thinking of Dick Cheney and Wolfowitz and all those regime criminals.

SYSTEM OF A DOWN - A.D.D. (American Dream Denial) Lyrics
We fought your wars with all our hearts,
You sent us back in body parts,
You took our wills with the truth you stole,
We offer prayers for your long lost soul.

The remainder is,
An unjustifiable, egotistical, power struggle,
At the expense of the American Dream,
Of the American dream, of the American, of the American.

We don't give a damn about your world,
With all your global profits and all your jeweled pearls,
We don't give a damn about your world,
Right now, right now.

We don't give a f**k about your world,
With all your global profits, and all your jeweld pearls,
We don't give a f**k about your world,
Right now, right now.

There is no flag that is large enough,
To hide the shame of a man in cuffs,
You switched the signs then you closed our blinds,
You changed the channel then you changed our minds.

You bring about the stick,
We bring about the confusion,
Bring about the solution,
Bring about the fusion,
Bring about the collusion,
Bring about revolution,
Bring about revolution,
Bring it about.

No flag large enoguh,
Shame on a man un cuffs,
You closed our blinds.

The remainder is,
An unjustifiable, egotistical, power struggle,
At the expense of the American Dream,
Of the American dream, of the American, of the American.

We don't give a damn about your world,
With all your global profits and all your jeweled pearls,
We don't give a damn about your world,
Right now, right now.

We don't give a f**k about your world,
With all your global profits, and all your jeweld pearls,
We don't give a f**k about your world,
Right now, right now, right now, right now, right now, right
now, right now, pararara...

The lyrics don't do justice to the very loud, very angry music that this band creates that go with these lyrics. This is a brutal song, though it makes use of pianoforte dynamics

System Of A Down - Attack Lyrics

Grieving each others lives
Holding this in mind
That if we fall, we all fall
And we fall alone

The calming sincerity of steel machines
Have consumed our euphoria
Transforming us into muted dreams
Dreaming of the day that

We attack
Attack, attack our fetal servitude
We attack
Attack, attack with pesticide
We attack
All the years of propaganda
We shall attack!

Bombs illustrate what we already know
Candles cry towards the sky
Bracing your plants of a polluted coast
Dreaming of the day that

We attack
Attack, attack our fetal servitude
We attack
Attack, attack with pesticide
We attack
All the years of propaganda
We shall attack!

Attack! (Attack!)

Grieving each others lives
Holding this in mind
That if we fall, we all fall
And we fall alone

Grieving each others lives
Holding this in mind
That if we fall, we all fall
And we fall alone

Was the philosophy of displaced minds
The bombing of all homes and villages?
Truth is the only sort we demise
Pleading till the day that

We attack
Attack, attack our fetal servitude
We attack
Attack, attack with pesticide
We attack
All the years of propaganda
We shall attack!

Attack all the homes and villages
Attack all the schools and hospitals
You have attacked all the innocent villages
We shall attack!

We shall attack!

I think this one is aimed right at the war propaganda. I can't imagine soldiers in Iraq listening to this, and I know many of them must be. This is one of those "suicide songs," extremely bleak.

System Of A Down - Soldier Side Lyrics

Dead men lying on the heart of the grave
Wondering when savior comes, if he is gonna be saved
Maybe you're a sinner and to your turn in life
Maybe you're a joker, maybe you deserve to die

They were crying when their sons left
God is wearing black
He's gone so far to find no hope
He's never coming back

They were crying when their sons left
All your men must go
He's come so far to find no truth
He's never going home

Young men standing on the top of their own grave
Wondering when Jesus comes, are they gonna be saved
Holy to the little bishop, tells the king his lies
Maybe you're a mourner, maybe you deserve to die

They were crying when their sons left
God is wearing black
He's gone so far to find no hope
He's never coming back

They were crying when their sons left
All your men must go
He's come so far to find no truth
He's never going home

Welcome to the soldier side
Where there is no one here but me
People all grow up to die
There is no one here but me

Welcome to the soldier side
There is no one here but me
People on the soldier side
There is no one here but me

No question at all for me.

Opeth - "Hope Leaves".

Hope Leaves

In the corner beside my window
Hangs a lonely photograph
There is no reason
I'd never notice
A memory that could hold me back

There is a wound that's always bleeding
There is a road I'm always walking
And I know you'll never return to this place

Gone through days without talking
There is a comfort in silence
So used to losing all ambition
Struggling to maintain what's left

Once undone, there is only smoke
Burning in my eyes to blind
To cover up what really happened
Force the darkness unto me

For me it's maybe "Where is my mind" from the Pixies.

I didn't even really know the lyrics, but the mood of the song and the context of the first time listening to it (in the movie "Fight Club") did it.

PIXIES LYRICS

"Where is My Mind"

Ooooooh - stop

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind [3x]

Way out in the water
See it swimmin'

I was swimmin' in the Carribean
Animals were hiding behind the rocks
Except the little fish
But they told me, he swears
Tryin' to talk to me to me to me

Where is my mind [3x]

Way out in the water
See it swimmin' ?

With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
If there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself

Where is my mind [3x]

Ooooh
With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Ooooh
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Ooooh
Ooooh

Here's one for a Suburban dieoff, Let's go Old School with Mean Streets by Van Halen

At night I walk this stinkin' street past the crazies on my block
And I see the same old faces and I hear that same old talk
And I'm searching for the latest thing, a break in this routine
I'm talkin' some new kicks, ones like you ain't never seen
This is home, this is Mean Street
(This is) Yes-ah home, the only one I know

An' we don't worry 'bout tomorrow 'cause we're sick of these four walls
Now what you think is nothin' might be somethin' after all
Now you know this ain't no through street, the end is dead ahead
The poor folks play for keeps down here, they're the living dead

Come on down, (Huh! Ow!) down (This is) to Mean Street
They're dancin' now, look! Out on Mean Street
Dance baby!

(Guitar Solo)

It's always here and now my friend, it ain't once upon a time
It's all over but the shouting, I come to take what's mine
We're searchin' for the latest thing, a break in this routine
Talkin' some new kicks, ones like you ain't never seen

This is home, (Ooh) this is Mean Street
(This is) Yes-ah home, only one I know

(This is home) See, a gun is real easy
(This is Mean Street) in this desperate part of town
(This is home) Turns you from hunted into hunter (Yeah)
(This is Mean Street) You go an' hunt somebody down
Wait a minute, ah (This is home) Somebody said "Fair warning", Lord
(This is Mean Street) Lord, strike that poor boy down!
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

So we are all to fondly imagine that Peak Oil will be accompanied by a full 5.1 surround-sound audio track, replete with (I suppose) symphony orchestra?

LOL, ahh, you guys are good for a laugh. What an enduring disappointment reality will be Post Peak oil: no rock & roll, no "easy listnin' " music, no jazz...

OH, well, I guess we'll all just have to make up our own music, like our ancestors did. But...GASP, that would mean *gasp* clasical music!

 or would you recommend a banjo and periodically blowing on an empty bottle marked XXXX?

The subject of the thread is referring to your peak oil awakening (ie from your first realisation of peak oil and it's consequnces up to present time). Of course I'd expect the imaginings of the future are what will influence music listening moods so the sound of silence may be apt for some.
