Not my favorite Stripes' song but how about

"The big three killed my baby"

The big three killed my baby
no money in my hand again
the big three killed my baby
nobody's coming home again

Their ideas made me want to spit
a hundred dollars goes down the pit
30,000 wheels are rollin'
and my stick shift hands are swollen
everything involved is shady
the big three killed my baby

The big three killed my baby
no money in my hand again
the big three killed my baby
nobody's coming home again

Why dont you take the day off and try to repair
a billion others dont seem to care
better ideas are stuck in the mud
the motors runnin' on tuckers blood
dont let them tell you the future's electric
cause gasolines not measured in metric
30,000 wheels are spinnin'
and oil company faces are grinnin'
now my hands are turnin' red
and i found out my baby is dead

The big three killed my baby
no money in my hand again
the big three killed my baby
nobody's coming home again

Well i've said it now, nothings changed
people are burnin for pocket change
and creative minds are lazy
and the big three killed my baby

And my baby's my common sense
so dont feed me planned obsolescence
yeah my baby's my common sense
so dont feed my planned obsolescence
im about to have another blowout
im about to have another blowout

Modest Mouse - Bury Me With It

We were shootin' at a mound of dirt.
Well nothing was broken, nothing was hurt.
But I probably really should have been at work.
But if my freetime's gone, would you promise me this?

That you will please bury me with it?
Please bury me with it!

Well sure as planets come, I know that they end.
And if I'm here when that happens, will you promise me this my
friend?

Please bury me with it!
I just don't need none of that Mad Max bullshit.

Well the suit got tight and it split at the seams.
But I kept it out of habit and I kept it really clean.
But if it's getting' faded, if it's runnin' outta thread,
Could you just do this for me my friend?

And please just please bury me with it?
Please bury me with it!

Well we moved to the left and moved to the right.
And sure as hell we stayed out almost every single night.
But if the party's over, if the fun has to end,
could you do this for me my friend?

Would you just please bury me with it?
Please bury me with it!

Good news for people who love bad news.
We've lost the plot and we just can't choose.
We are hummingbirds who are just not willing to move.
And there's good news for people who love bad news.
We are hummingbirds who've lost the plot and we will not move.
We have good news for anyone who loves bad news.

We were aiming for the moon. We were shooting at the stars.
But the kids were just shooting at the busses and the cars.
So don't drink the water, don't you breathe the air.
If it's gotten to that point then I have to declare:

That you please bury me with it!
Please bury me with it!

Well fads they come and fads they go.
And God I love that rock and roll!
Well the point was fast but it was too blunt to miss.
Life handed us a paycheck, we said, "We worked harder than
this!"

Please bury me with it!
Please bury me with it!

We are hummingbirds who are just not going to move.
And there's good news for people who love bad news.
We are hummingbirds who've lost the plot and we well not move.
We have great news for anyone who loves bad news.

Iron Maiden - Wasted Years

From the coast of gold, across the seven seas,
I'm travelling on, far and wide,
But now it seems, I'm just a stranger to myself,
And all the things I sometimes do, it isn't me but someone else.

I close my eyes, and think of home,
Another city goes by, in the night,
Ain't it funny how it is, you never miss it til it's gone away,
And my heart is lying there and will be til my dying day.

Chorus:
So understand
Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years,
Face up...make your stand,
And realise you're living in the golden years.

Too much time on my hands, I got you on my mind,
Can't ease this pain, so easily,
When you can't find the words to say, it's hard to make it through another day,
And it makes me wanna cry, and throw my hands up to the sky.

Chorus:
So understand
Don't waste your time always searching for those wasted years,
Face up...make your stand,
And realise you're living in the golden years.

David Rovics
Before the oil wells ran dry

Were you drinking wine from Argentina
Or Indonesian coffee
Did you take some in a plane
And go fly across the country
Did you go to work the next week
Drive your daily twenty miles
Stop off at Sears to see
The latest Chinese styles
When you did these things
Did you wonder how or why
In the years before the oil wells ran dry

Were you watching the news
Did you wonder when
They’d bomb another country
Or start up the draft again
As you tried to stop the war
That might decide the planet’s fate
Did you stop to question
How that food got on your plate
As you stuck your fork
Into that slice of pie
In the years before the oil wells ran dry

When you went back to college
To get another PhD
Or you went into the studio
To record one more CD
Did it occur to you
That your time might be spent better
Digging in the earth
Or learning to knit a sweater
Did you prepare for all the changes
Or at least pretend to try
In the years before the oil wells ran dry

When the cars and planes stopped running
And the dollar hit the floor
And the hordes of hungry children
Were knocking on your door
When unemployed men in the streets said
Blame the Arabs for our plight
Did you shout with dirt held high
"Farmers of the world unite"

Did you ride an ox into town
And say "join the Green Revolution or die"
In the years before the oil wells ran dry

Come 'n listen to my story 'bout a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed
And then one day, he was shootin' at some food
And up through the ground come a bubblin' crude
Oil, that is, black gold, Texas tea

Well, the first thing you know, old Jed's a millionaire
Kin folk said, Jed, move away from there
Said, Californy is the place you oughta be
So they loaded up the truck and they moved to Beverly
Hills, that is, swimmin' pools, movie stars

Well, now it's time to say goodbye to Jed and all his kin
They would like to thank you folks for kindly droppin' in
You're all invited back again to this locality
To have a heapin' helpin' of their hospitality
Hillbilly, that is, set a spell, take your shoes off

Y'all come back now, hear?
The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

Gnarls Barkley: Crazy

I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that phase.
Even your emotions had an echo
In so much space

And when you're out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much

Does that make me crazy
Does that make me crazy
Does that make me crazy
Probably

And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that's my only advice
Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are,
Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you're in control

Well, I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
Just like me

My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember is thinking, I want to be like them
Ever since I was little, ever since I was little it looked like fun
And it's no coincidence I've come
And I can die when I'm done

Maybe I'm crazy
Maybe you're crazy
Maybe we're crazy
Probably

Call me an old fogey baby boomer, but nobody write better lyrics than Ray Davies, and I was living it back then, too...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')"Kinks: A Gallon Of Gas"

I’ve been waiting for years to buy a brand new cadillac
But now that I’ve got one I want to send it right back
I can’t afford the gas to fill my luxury limousine
But even if I had the dough no one’s got no gasoline

I went to my local dealer to see if he could set me straight
He said there’s a little gas going but I’d have to wait
But he offered some red hot speed and some really high grade hash
But a gallon of gas can’t be purchased anywhere for any amount of cash

I can score you some coke and some grade one grass
But I can’t get a gallon of gas
I’ve got some downers some speed all the drugs that you need
But I can’t get a gallon of gas
There’s no more left to buy or sell
There’s no more oil left in the well
A gallon of gas can’t be purchased anywhere
For any amount of cash

I love your body-work, but you’re really no use
How can I drive you when I got no juice?
Because it’s stuck in neutral and my engine’s got no speed
And the highways are deserted
And the air smells unnaturally clean.

It’s got power-assisted overdrive and carpets on the floor,
But it’s parked out front just like a dead dinosaur.
And I’ll be paying off the bank for 45 years or more.
It should go 100 miles an hour,
But it’s never moved away from my door.

Who needs a car and a seven-forty-seven
When you can’t buy a gallon of gas
Who needs a highway, an airport or a jet
When you can’t get a gallon of gas
There’s no more left to buy or sell
There’s no more oil left in the well
A gallon of gas can’t be purchased anywhere
For any amount of cash
You can’t buy a gallon of gas

guess I'm a little late to this.

I dig the old stuff. America's seen its better days.

Pass Around the Bottle and We'll All Take a Drink.

I have to include this old classic too:

Twenty-five cents for the morphine/ Fifteen cents for the beer/ Twenty-five cents for the morphine/ Gonna drink me away from here.

From Hee Haw...

Gloom, despair, and agony on me.
Deep dark depression, excessive misery.
If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.
Gloom, despair, and agony on me.

Mainly Tool, System of a Down, Audioslave, that sort of stuff. I don't listen much, but I've gotten into those three a good bit.

My soundtrack music is really background music for my own personal Peak Oil movie. I play Worldbeat Brazil by Jezzro and Huff, all the time while I'm surfing this forum. The two experiences are now irrevocably linked in my brain. The beautiful track 'Night in Bolivia' is now associated with images of abandoned cars, deserted suburbs and the sharp pang of anticipation at the idea of coming changes. I guess this music affects me so because it's all written in the minor key.

Well, I'll turn the volume back up ....

Regards,

L.

Having found Punk Rawk when I was 12 (1980)....I have not stopped listening to the Subhumans (UK).....
The song "Apathy" to this day remains one of my favorites from the band as well as a great assesment of today's humans:

APATHY

Drink, Sex, Cigarettes
Ford Cortina household pets
Bombs? War? Famine? Death?
An apathetic public couldn t care less

The Public watches ITV
Reads The Sun drinks cups of tea
Two-star family stay content
Their lives controlled by parliament
Well daddy's lost his job again
Because he never had no brain
He only lives to watch TV
His life controlled by apathy

The Russians seem so far away
The government seems to be OK
The papers never mention war
Cos the people that they cater for have got….

The things that you never knew were there
Or was it that you didn't care
The biggest problem face to face
An apathetic human race

This one says it all...
Artist: Jimmie's Chicken Shack
Title: Milk

milk them chickens
and pluck them cows
we're the ones
that gonna fuck you now
wandering with no purpose
things we do well i don't know
we'll go all the way down to mexico
join up with the circus
and no prophet today
words could sound so sweet
like the beat of the souls
in the drums of our feet
no fear will rise today

who do we think we are
who do we think we are

and what's left to save
well it's time that we will
give her back what she gave
i'm not talking to myself
i'm just the only
one who's listening

mine doesn't matter
think of all that we could do
if we could just join together
one of these days
we're gonna break through
wise never looked so strange
life is something
that will soon fade away
and if anything is right today
it's that we're hypnotized man

who do we think we are
yea who do you think we are
who do you think we are

and no prophet's words
would ever sound as sweet
as the beat of the souls
in the drums of our feet
no fear we will rise today (x2)

but it's politics
and i'm no politician
yea it's just politics, polytricks,
polydicks, politics
and i'm no politician
yea but i've got the attitude
attitude it ain't nothing but
a bunch of head fattitude
talking 'bout my attitude, attitude
it ain't nothing but a bunch of head fat
who do i think i am
yea who do you think you are
and who do we think you are
and who do you think we are

chicken

and what's left to say
well it's time that we will
give her back what she gave
i'm talking to myself
im' just the only one who's listening
mind over matter
think of all we could do
if we could just join together

one of these days
we're gonna break through
wise never looked so strange
life is something
that will soon fade away
and if anything is right today
it's that we're hypnotized man

who do we think we are
who do we think we are

Buncha great lyrics here ladies and germs ;-)

I really liked "when the well goes dry" and alot of the older stuff still stands up well.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Vexed', 'S')leep Now in the Fire - Rage Against the Machine

The world is my expense
The cost of my desire
Jesus blessed me with it’s future
And I protect it with fire
So raise your fists
And march around
Don’t dare take what you need
I’ll jail and bury those committed
And smother the rest in greed
Crawl with me into tomorrow
Or I’ll drag you to your grave
I’m deep inside your children
They’ll betray you in my name

Sleep now in the fire

The lie is my expense
The scope of desire
The party blessed me with it’s future
And I protect it with fire
I am the nina the pinta the santa maria
The noose and the rapist
And the fields overseer
The agents of orange
The priests of hiroshima
The cost of my desire

Sleep now in the fire

For it’s the end of history
It’s caged and frozen still
There is no other pill to take
So swallow the one
That made you ill
The nina the pinta the santa maria
The noose and the rapist
The fields overseer
The agents of orange
The priests of hiroshima
The cost of my desire

Sleep now in the fire

That one was good but this one is more PO related really ;-)

Rage Against The Machine
The Battle of Los Angeles (1999)
Testify

The movie ran through me
The Glamour subdue me
The tabloid untie me
Im empty please fill me
Mister anchor assure me
That Baghdad is burning
Your voice it is so soothing
That cunning mantra of killing
I need you my witness
To dress this up so bloodless
To numb me and purge me now
Of thoughts of blaming you
Yes the car is our wheelchair
My witness your coughing
Oily silence mocks the legless
Boys who travel now in coffins

On the corner (corner)
The jurys sleepless (sleepless)
We found your weakness (weakness)
And its right outside your door

Now testify
Now testify
Its right outside your door
Now testify
Yes testify
Its right outside your door

With precision you feed me
My witness Im hungry
Your temple it calms me
So I can carry on
My slaving, sweating,
The skin right off my bones
On a bed of fire Im choking
On the smoke that fills my home
The wrecking ball is rushing
Witness your blushing
The pipeline is gushing
While here we lie in tombs

While on the corner (corner)
The jurys sleepless (sleepless)
We found your weakness (weakness)
And its right outside your door

Now testify
Yeah testify
Its right outside your door
Now Testify
Now Testify
And its right outside your door

Mass graves for the pump and the price is set, and the price is set
Mass graves for the pump and the price is set, and the price is set
Mass graves for the pump and the price is set, and the price is set
Mass graves for the pump and the price is set, and the price is set

Who controls the present now controls the past

pssst...They think cops with guns and small yet pretty walls with gates will protect them - well isn't that special in a church lady kinda way ;-)

Ok tool - What could be more appropriate then Aenima???hmmm

I admit it stands on its own as possibly the baddest tool song to date and it includes so many aspects relative to PO and of course GW or "AGW".

Ok I found it.

[Faaip De Oiad]
-I, I don't have a whole lot of time. Um, OK, I'm a former employee of Area 51. I, I was let go on a medical discharge about a week ago and, and... {chokes} I've kind of been running across the country. Um, um, Damn, I don't know where to start, they're, they're gonna, um, they'll triangulate on this position really really soon. OK, um, um, OK, what we're thinking of as, as aliens, uh, they're extradimensional beings, that, an earlier precursor of the, um, space program they made contact with. They are not what they claim to be. Uh, they've infiltrated a, a lot of aspects of, of, of the military establishment, particularly the Area 51. The disasters that are coming, they, the military, I'm sorry, the government knows about them. And there's a lot of safe areas in this world that they could begin moving the population to now. They are not! They want those major population centers wiped out so that the few that are left will be more easily controllable.-

Ok this "song" is not better the Aenima but for some odd reason I was subliminally compelled to post it......

hahah gotta love "Jimmy" - makes me proud to be a buckeye if only for one fleeting nanosecond.........

I wonder if I should tell him how unsustainable arizona will be post peak? ;-)

Yep, this is the song that spins in my head when I think of "these times". Can we have soundtrack and not just lyrics? Sure, why not.

Tool - Aenema

One only has to listen to the opening lines to "get it". 8)
