first time i've seen this link. i will (attempt to) download as soon as i get home. i'm excited to share it with my wife... if i miraculously get the whole thing tonite i'll make many copies and hand it out to many friends at our big annual camping trip this weekend.

Anyone familiar with the Fibonacci sequence? Not having seen the video, the description of exponential growth reminds me of that. A population with no predators will expand at a rate of roughly 1.618 (theta, the golden ration) times per generation. and as was pointed out by johnmarkos, since there are 1.618 times more people in generation next than generation before, when generation before dies off, we still have more than when we started...

Gosh I hate you! I would love to meet Bartlett.

My students find his video to be one of the better ones.

Very well done video. Thanks!

He concludes PO in 2004. In any case, it's 1 minute to 12:00.

Even with all this information, it's hard to get your mind around the fact that this is going on RIGHT NOW.

In a nutshell, the litre per person number is going to drop since the population isn't going anywhere soon. The first to lose out are the poor countries. Which by the way, is going on NOW.

after watching the 1st half of the video:

i'm loving it. i see his arguments as rock solid. i don't, however, think this will be useful for someone without a mathematical brain. most of us here probably have that. but many people just don't think logarithmic math and calculus is at all simple, and i think they would be overwhelmed and choose not to continue. so far, i think this is a great lecture--for the right types of people.

looking forward to the 2nd half. glad, at least for now and the next 35 minutes, that i have NOTHING to do at work today except wait.

I just found a transcript (i think thats what it is called?) with figures and all! It's really good if there's something you did not understand in the video.

Just for the new folks... mostly.

First post this thread.

Watch this video...

If you can't quiet grasp why some folks around here are pretty worried, this video should clear up any doubts.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I've downloaded the .rm file (110mb) but it won't play, what am I doing wrong? How can I make this work without resorting to the bittorrent type stuff you guys were talking about?

I read parts of the NPG report and it made me physically ill, I really want to see the video.

Hmm there was a version a while back of this where he was addressing a group of college students in a classroom. Anyone know where I can find that? Also I believe that it was mpeg format or maybe avi/windows.

Thank you very much Dukat. It works fine now. Now I have to figure out how to get my wife to sit through a 60 minute lecture.

Great video.

As a communications minor I really appreciate this guys skills in public speaking, it makes ALL the difference.

His delivery, organization, tranistion, and exemplification are really good.

Long story short, he's a real OG. I recently gave a speech on PO in one of my comm classes that I thought was pretty good, the prof came up to me and wanted to discuss after class etc. But really, nothing on this guy.

I also LOVE the way he used the exponential function and very basic calculus to illustrate this problem. I already knew it, but i'd never seen someone use it as a topical approach to a speech on PO. beutifal. Fact is this is a mathematical problem and i'd estimate less than 5% of the US population retains the simple math skills required to comphrehend it.

This guy reteaches them in an hour in a very interesting/granfatherly way. people might actually sit through this and learn something!

I'm sending this to my close family and friends. He manages to do in a credible, unavoidable, and interesting way what i have been putting of doing. It seems like so many adults these days are so childish in their unwillingness to comphrehend anything new.

IE trying to get people to understand the core issue at hand here.

taking the red pill if you will.

I sent it to my family members too, and apparently none of them ever watched it. Several have the math skills too. I prefaced it as "The clearest presentation I've yet seen about how the human race is in big trouble." Oh well.
