Fact-filled video on Exponential Growth

Discuss research and forecasts regarding hydrocarbon depletion.

I think this is a challenge to any optimists left lurking these boards. Tell us a way that we can achieve 0 population growth but keep suffering to a minimum? Maybe we need suicide booths like the cartoon, Futurama. I think that lowering birth rates will be the most ideal, but also the most challenging to achieve. Hunger will be pretty tough to avoid in a world with a yearly shortfall in energy production and a population that is still trying to grow. Of course hunger paves the way for disease and war. These are mother nature's most common choices from the list.

For those who don't know, humans are the only mammal whose females are capable of becoming pregnant 12 months out of the year. If we are unable to manage our numbers through wisdom, perhaps some genetic engineering is needed to put us back in line with the rest of nature.

Sheesh...

Does anybody have a link for this video that actually WORKS? [smilie=angry5.gif] [smilie=cussing.gif] The Realmedia stream dies after a few seconds (if it starts at all), edonkey is worthless crap (I've NEVER been able to get anything to successfully download from that network, even after trying several clients), and apparently the bittorrent tracker is down.

If anyone has the avi version and knows how to seed a torrent, please do so and post a link here. I'll help with seeding it once I have a copy. I can also host it intermittently from my hard drive thru http for those who can only manage a "Right-Click Save"...

I was able to view the realmedia stream by changing the settings in the player to 56k.

In my opinion, the most effective way to reduce the population is disease, which would spread quite quickly due to intercontinental travel. Of course, the public would not approve of a campaign for disease, but, in my opinion, I think that we'll be due for another epidemic soon, so maybe nature, the government, or whoever, is already at the plate.

So does nature. When any given species exceeds the carrying capacity of their environment, two things set in: disease and the inability to reproduce due to toxins or malnutrition. 37% of all deaths last year were disease related. Look at all the premature births, fertility clinics, and the related multiple births that go with it. Mother Nature batts last.

Yup, don't use edonkey, use emule. On a good day, I can get upwards of 80 KB/sec on emule.

Bittorrent can be even better provided the tracker is up and there are seeds around, that one can hit the download limit cap which is around 180 KB/sec (on 1500K cable).

I've finished getting the 400 MB lecture video from emule some time back, haven't watched it yet (due to my anime backlog, couldn't help it, lol). Maybe later today, or tomorrow.

And here I sit, out in the sticks, at the end of the phone line, where my lousy connection rarely budges over 24 kps. I can go thru a six pack while a 3 minute audio downloads. This valley didn't get electricity til the 1950s, so I probably shouldn't complain about my turtle connection. Still, it would be nice to some day see 56 kps. An impossible dream no doubt . . .?

Stick it out, big guy. This is a video worth watching. I just saw an article that stated that SA just doubled their reserves. After watching this video, my raction was, "so what?" It's a real eye-opener.

Math. Just math.

Anyone know how I can save this presentation to my computer? I've tried saving the link, but that just saves a shortcut to it. Once I'm in realplayer I can't find a way to save the file either...

It should be possible, theoretically at least, to download the clip using Streambox VCR. Do a search for Streambox VCR Suite 2.
If the wait gets far too annoying, and you'd like to see it in good quality, it can be bought on DVD here:
http://scimath.unl.edu/exp/expmain.html

No online ordering though... Damn. And they don't accept credit cards either.

Was finally able to download and view the video.

Wow, if that doesn't catch your attention nothing will. He said something like, to be sustainable, every person must use less than 1.7 liter of oil a day. Gulp.

Too bad he wasn't included in The End of Suburbia. Would have made it a lot more effective.

No offense to the End of the Suburbia, but I thought the same thing. His presentation is probably more likely to catch the attention of the average person. Plus he really gets to the heart of the matter: the real problem is exponential growth. Now it's oil, but it could just as easily be something else like water.

In case anyone is still interested, the ED2K link for this file is still valid.

I have uploaded about 1 GB already. As far as I can tell, there are only 6 complete sources worldwide, and there are currently about 20 people on my queue.

Will continue to help to spread this for a while longer. Now that's P2P for a good cause

Files on the ED2K network have a much longer shelf life than torrents. Help spread the word!

This video seriously made my day. It distroys any delusional optimism about growing forever, living on Mars and having flying cars!!!!!!!!! Thank you mother nature.

Now when people piss me off about endless growth I can talk about grains of wheat on a chess board and totally distroy their delusional behavior.

Finally!

What an excellent video!

I've always understood the power of doubling, but I'd completely forgotten about the significance of the exponential function and the types of calculations that could be made with it (what can I say, it's been awhile since school - speaking of doubling... and then some... ).

Talk about an eye-opener... 8O

If there's anyone else that wants to see this video but is having trouble with the stream or with grabbing it thru p2p, message me with a day and timeframe during which you'd like to download it and I will send you a link where you can get it from my machine. It's about 400 Megs; shouldn't take more than a few hours on a cable connection. :)

There should be at least 6 complete sources on ED2K. PM me your emule userID if you like, if I see you I can give you a friend slot - guaranteed transfer, skip the queue ..

DVD available

Postby Danimal » Tue 11 Jan 2005, 23:43:13

This is a great video for getting people to wake up and pay attention. I think I'll use it as a starting point after someone "takes the red pill" and asks for more information. I had been using Beyond Suburbia for that task, but a lot of people refused to watch the whole thing since it wasn't a happy, mindless, Hollywood movie, and there's only depressing news for the first one hour and two minutes.

Bartlett keeps things moving, though, and doesn't even pause to take a breath through his whole speech. Plus, he uses examples of the news articles we see every day telling us not to worry, and promptly debunks them.

This same lecture, in high quality video, with good graphics and animations for all his slides is available on DVD from the University of Nebraska here:
