The world is running out of oranges. Whereas in 1892, roughly 3/5 of 1% of arable land was devoted to orange production, today it is under 1/100th of 1% and falling. Orange juice is up to $4 a gallon, higher in many places. Meanwhile, a new and rapacious demand for the fruit has risen in rapidly westernizing China. Something has to give. Whereas yesterday it was "not just for breakfast anymore," tomorrow it may not be available for breakfast at all.

Not a problem, the market will take care of it. When the price goes up over $5/gal new trees will be planted, or else synthetic orange juice will be made out of corn stalks.

big deal, oranges are abiotic. this was discovered by russian scientists.

I've been getting juice out of the same orange for almost 7 months now.
I just keep it in my shirt pocket for whenever I'm thirsty.

Right, good point. There haven't been any juice factories built in thirty years. Right now in Florida, there are huge stocks of rotting oranges and no way to process them!

I agree, and what we really need is a full, honest account of orange reserves.
Sadly enough OJEC will never allow this...

that is the problem with you fruity peak doomers....the sky is falling, the sky is falling. Come on now...there is no reason to panic, why I be at this very moment the biggy-wigs over at delmonte are working on a techno solution that will solve all of our fruit related problems.

And don't forget mobile warming! We don't have enough cooling bags either to maintain the orange juice economy. People just don't understand the simple juicodynamic law of Entropicana...

Actually, we are more likely hitting the peak of light sweet oranges. There are still plenty of heavy sour oranges, though there are not enough facilities to process them into FCOJ.

I'm with you. I find humor in almost everything today, esp. at all the new spectacles (Bass Pro, Cabela's, Ikea) and strip malls going up in my area. Kunstler says it all: psychology of previous investment, consensus trance, et. al. All I am thinking is that I'm glad I'm not invested in any of it. :)

Peak Orange? Yikes! This really is the end of Suburbia! Are Hybrids the answer? Is this country prepared for a major hurricane hitting our crop reserve in Florida? The fact that Florida's Governor is Jeb Bush or that Haliburton owns all the groves IS NO ACCIDENT, its a conspiracy!

Can we expect Homeland Security to screen illegal immegrants who pick our Oranges?
