Peak Orange

Unread postby PalatineCreator » Tue 29 Nov 2005, 17:47:21

The world is running out of oranges. Whereas in 1892, roughly 3/5 of 1% of arable land was devoted to orange production, today it is under 1/100th of 1% and falling. Orange juice is up to $4 a gallon, higher in many places. Meanwhile, a new and rapacious demand for the fruit has risen in rapidly westernizing China. Something has to give. Whereas yesterday it was "not just for breakfast anymore," tomorrow it may not be available for breakfast at all.

Not a problem, the market will take care of it. When the price goes up over $5/gal new trees will be planted, or else synthetic orange juice will be made out of corn stalks.

Don't worry about shortages, it's nothing that switching to orange drink won't cure... 8)

big deal, oranges are abiotic. this was discovered by russian scientists.

I've been getting juice out of the same orange for almost 7 months now.
I just keep it in my shirt pocket for whenever I'm thirsty.

I totally forgot about oranges being abiotic. I remember reading that in a dated Russian encyclopedia that's sitting next to my old perpetual motion generator and shrink-ray gun. :P

"OMG! We all gonna die because there are no alternatives to orange juice! Every other juice has a lower EROEI than orange juice!"

Nonsense! It is very important that you understand that this is not an orange juice crisis, it is a liquid orange juice crisis!

Right, good point. There haven't been any juice factories built in thirty years. Right now in Florida, there are huge stocks of rotting oranges and no way to process them!

I agree, and what we really need is a full, honest account of orange reserves.
Sadly enough OJEC will never allow this...

Where will all this lead? Will the world go juicular one day? It makes me so banana to think about it...

Don't start with the bananas, we have enough to worry about with the oranges. But it wouldn't suprise me if we're at Peak Bananas. The Perfect Storm: everything goes wrong at the same time.

I like this kind of thing. I like something to laugh about, while I can, at least. My guess is that laughter will be hard to come by in just a short while. I liked the OJEC line.

Only agent orange can save us...

And don't forget mobile warming! We don't have enough cooling bags either to maintain the orange juice economy. People just don't understand the simple juicodynamic law of Entropicana...

Actually, we are more likely hitting the peak of light sweet oranges. There are still plenty of heavy sour oranges, though there are not enough facilities to process them into FCOJ.

I'm with you. I find humor in almost everything today, esp. at all the new spectacles (Bass Pro, Cabela's, Ikea) and strip malls going up in my area. Kunstler says it all: psychology of previous investment, consensus trance, et. al. All I am thinking is that I'm glad I'm not invested in any of it. :)

Peak Orange? Yikes! This really is the end of Suburbia! Are Hybrids the answer? Is this country prepared for a major hurricane hitting our crop reserve in Florida? The fact that Florida's Governor is Jeb Bush or that Haliburton owns all the groves IS NO ACCIDENT, its a conspiracy!

Can we expect Homeland Security to screen illegal immegrants who pick our Oranges?

makes my head split, gotta call Art Bell tonight,

I dunno....

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PrairieMule', 'A')re Hybrids the answer?

Hybrids are the answer, duly noted by the introduction of the grapple (pictured below). Looks like an apple, tastes like a grape, allowing both to be eliminated altogether (Nobody likes apples anyways).
Now, what are we going to combine the orange with? :P

Yeah it's nice to have a laugh, it's a good therapy from PO-angst, and I find it amusing that everyone knows the jargon and the topics by heart and immediately knows what they are referring to - every cult has its own language...

(Off topic: mule, great sig-line, but wasn't it William Faulkner who said it? Yes, I confess, I am an anal retentive :-D )

On topic again: Did you ever wonder why the free masons used the sun as a symbol? And the sunshine state produces what? :!:

Today it's Grapple, tommorow Soy Oranges.

But Seriously, you have a point about the Masons. Everyone in the know is aware of the secret meeting of power brokers of Goverment and the corporate sector out near San Francisco. It's held at THE GROVE!!

Why did I take the Vitamin C pill?

When the Iranians try to sell OJ in Euros, look out! There is a mysterious connection between the Dollar symbolism and FreeMasons:
