Last Christmas I predicted we'd see $2.50 before the end of 2005 and thought it was a pretty risky prediction. Now it turns out I was being too cautious.

Re: Disappearing Gas Station Price Signs?

Unread postby wisegoat » Wed 31 Aug 2005, 05:52:37

here in canada we don't have much choice.. our signs are designed per litre and thus only has room for two numbers and a decimal.. so most places i look I see "__._" which is really chilling. They've resorted to oldfashioned cardboard signs on the side of the road (most esso's i've come accross don't bother with either).. there's a few stations that are just putting the last bit of the price tag up so it looks like "02.9" .. wow, cheap gas!

I noticed that in France at Total stations as well recently...

I was suspecting the same kind of tactics...

In Ireland where I live the law requires that service stations display the prices for petrol and diesel. The notice must be clearly visible from the side of the road and be in writing at least 20cm in height. The order specifies that the prices must be displayed in litres. In addition, the actual price charged at the petrol pump must match the price displayed.

Here in Italy they never used to put price signs... nobody cares about gas prices after all (it's about $6 per gallon, so there's no point in driving 3 km more just to save 3 cents per liter). Also, people here never fill the tank but asks for "10 euros" of "20 euros" of gas every time... filling the tank is too expensive.

Lately, after the price spikes, they all put the signs, but I've noticed some of them disappearing in the latest days. I think they're tired to change the price every day so they dropped the whole useless signs business

Haha.... free plastic flag at petrol station. Malaysia celebrates it's independent day today. Stuck that on your helmet. Currently USD 1.61 per US galloon. My 1992 Lancer not refilled yet. When time come , I just pushed it into the sea. I will never sell it (my lovely modded Lancer).

Got screwed by colleagues and mother when they reported that I cycled to work. My relatives spotted me and telephoned to my mom. Almost fell down from bicycle due to my mom phone call.. At work, I told them no more cheap fuel. They said US should offered SPR to lower oil price. Some said fusion energy just around the corner..

Next time, shut off the telephone while cycling. And yes this year, no many ppl celebrates national day this year. Many blame politician for economic woes. I almost got hit by suggesting peak oil. They said I belong to the "Dark Side". Dark Side use bicycle ??

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('energyaddict', 'b')y the end of the year the US will lead the world - in that particular list....!

I don't think so. Gasoline is also traded on the world market. So in Europe we will also be paying higher prices. So unless the US petrol stations are going to increase their profit margins, I think the Netherlands will stay in the lead.

The list above was from March 2005. Currently in the Netherlands the price today is (for Euro 95):

€1.459 per ltr.

€1.459 * 3.7854118 (ltr to US gallon) = €5,52
€5,52 * 1.2195 (EUR to USD) = $6.71 per gallon

$6.71 per gallon.

So that is up $0.23 per gallon since March 2005.

But these price differences are mainly due to government taxes. So the extra money we pay for gas we get back in some form. Would instead all that money go to the oil companies than these prices would be more of a problem, because the government would still need to get that tax income form somewhere. It probably did motivate us to keep our oil consumption relatively low (compared to the US).

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('marko', 'I') hear that the US Midwest is very dependent on supply from Louisiana. Perhaps the same is true for Ontario?

No, I'm fairly certain Canada does not import much (if any) oil from the US. Canada is a net oil exporter.

Canadian gasoline prices soar

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/ ... /Business/

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')...

Motorists in Canada's biggest cities were jolted awake Wednesday by a stunning jump in gas prices — in some centres costs rose as much as 20 cents a litre — in the wake of the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina on U.S. energy sector.

In Toronto, prices were running around the $1.19 a litre mark at some stations. Overnight in Vancouver, gas prices jumped 12 cents to about $1.13 a litre.

In Fredericton, prices at some stations went up to $1.19, an increase of about eight cents a litre. Lineups were reported at places still offering regular unleaded for $1.11.

According to Torontogasprices.com, the highest per-litre price reported over the past 24 hours was in Newmarket, Ont., where costs hit $1.29.

"This is not good," one Toronto motorist told news station CP24 Wednesday morning. "I do an hour and a half everyday to and from work. This is not good."

The price hikes come on the heels of reports of extensive damage to oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico that sent crude oil prices surging above $70 (U.S.) overseas for a second consecutive day on Wednesday in what some analysts described as an "evolving energy crisis" as a result of the hurricane.

So:
1 Canadian Dollar = 0.83949 US Dollar
1 US Dollar (USD) = 1.19120 Canadian Dollar (CAD)

What, $US 4/gal?

Prices here are $1.20 per liter in CDN dollars.

That works out to about $3.84 USD per gallon.
