I've got to say that a sign that says "Your retarded," using the wrong version of "you're," is pretty damn funny.

Yeah, it's a t-shirt design off of bustedtees.com.

I think it's hilarious...and, yet, fairly subtle.

Simmons, Bartlett, Deffeyes, etc. Interviews E&E TV

Postby LadyRuby » Thu 11 Aug 2005, 22:36:47

I never saw this site before, they have interviews with everyone! Even Caruso from EIA (haven't seen THAT one yet).

Cool link, thanks.

http://www.eande.tv/transcripts/?date=040705#transcript

I looked at the Caruso/Felmy interview from 4/7/05 and there was an interesting quote regarding peak oil:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Ben Geman: Is it possible that this is starting to become a permanent fixture of the energy landscape? There was a presentation recently by a member of the House of Representatives, Roscoe Bartlett, on the idea of peak oil. Do you guys agree that we're sorted at the peak of the Hubbert curve or we're going to soon reach the peak of the Hubbert curve in worldwide oil production?

John Felmy: Absolutely not. People have been saying we're running out of oil for a long time. Only a short period after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania, the chief geologist of Pennsylvania said we were going to run out of oil in four years and that was just using it for kerosene. The key is going forward is that we continue to develop technology. Markets continue to move the appropriate resources around and we find more oil than what we use. So as long as reserves continue to build you don't even reach a peak. So I would say that's a bit premature to make those statements. That being said, unless we do make the investments required to bring oil resources online you could see the continued tight markets that we experience.
(emphasis added). Well, that's good to hear!

I thought that this was quite hilarious:
Ken Deffeyes: I happen to have some deep feelings that if the Chinese took over and fired everybody at Unocal it wouldn't bother me in the least.

Bloomberg Radio Mentions Simmons

Postby hoplite » Mon 22 Aug 2005, 23:07:52

In a discussion about oil, (not peak oil, just the usual hand wringing over oil futures prices with a guest, ferget who) the host on Bloomberg today mentioned Matthew Simmons. The host said that he had spoken with Simmons and described him as an investment banker in the oil industry- no mention of "peak oil" no mention of Simmons' trademark Saudi studies, just a quote from Simmons about oil prices going higher or some such non-sense. So, I'm convinved now that at least Wall Street is aware of a possible problem but what do they (the traders) know that we don't? If what SImmons says is even partially true, you'd think the traders would have panicked already. Awareness is rising- I dunno if thats a good thing though...

Ahh, but traders have a very short term orientation. I'm aware that long-term deferred contracts for crude exist, but you'll notice they don't trade very much.

There's an old stock market saying - long term is settlement date. Used to, that was 3 business days. Another one - long term investments are short term trades that went down.

I think what we've got to watch is the stock market - it's badly overvalued - and when it cracks and reverts to normal valuations, then we can believe that the story is beginning to come out. This might be catalyzed by an airline bankruptcy - or by the failure of GM, FNMA, or other such supposed bastions of financial strength.

The Matthew Simmons Thread pt 3 (merged)

Postby realeyz » Tue 23 Aug 2005, 09:21:54

Did anyone catch Matthew Simmons on Fox news yesterday? He was on the Neil Cavuto hour and did a small bit on Saudi Oil reserves and his book. It was only a 5 minute bit, but it is the first and only time I have heard the utterance of "Peak Oil" on a major TV news network. Actually he said it several times.

Anyway, I have it on my TiVO and can Divx it if a lot of people really want to see it.

That is interesting Realeyz.

If he was on Fox he will be on other network shows. Peak Oil may be starting to break through.

I was watching MSNBC and there was a former executive from some big company talking about future prospects for the economy and he basically said we are screwed.

It was pretty entertaining. These financial shows are all about where to put your money in the stock market, and the host asked what to do with your cash and the executive said it take out of the stock market.

Typically these shows try to stay as positive as they can because no one watches them all day long to find out how there gold is doing.

Convert it to divxx and post if it is not too much trouble.

I'm kind of surprised Faux News would cover this, even if Simmons is a Republican. Did they take him seriously? Or did they try to paint him as a nut?

Here is a link to what Cal Thomas has to say about high gas prices.

He says that Americans should quit there bitching and drive less. It is one of the better analysis of the current Peak oil problem regardless of his ideological background.

This is a good article indeed. Peakoil is not about the depletion of oil, it is mostly about the American way of life and a culture of consumption that expects cheap prices.

If it wasn't for American greed for consumption goods, oil would be around for a couple of hundreds of years more...

Simmons on Your world with Dorkus

I obtained the complete transcript and it is nearly identical to the linked story.

"Dorkus" (Varney) starts off wrong with the statement "running out of oil", to which Simmons did not specifically respond.

These kind of misleading comments distracts attention away from the issue of PO is about. Faux news viewers may think, well everything is ok - we are not running out of oil yet.

These shows are infotainment.

They do not get into deep discussions and the subtle but important concept that PO is not running out of oil but running half out is lost in the 3 min blurb fest and to deep for such a shallow show.

But the show is till rather ominous to even mention PO is a big deal. He will be booked on MSNBC next you can bet on it or he may already be. These guys all run the same story as each other.

This is story is just gaining traction and the longer and the higher the prices go the more the big media will begin to talk about PO.
