Out of curiosity, what kind of life do you think those of us raised in redneck/coal country/hicksville lived? You are implying that growing up redneck was a wonderful experience?

Let me describe my growing up, and how fantastic it was, from 1st grade through high school graduation, being a redneck cracker in the hill country.

If you didn't shoot it yourself or grow it, your calorie intake might be a little low. Some call that hunger. When all your friends long to be the flagman on the county road crew, because it was a union job for as long as it lasted, it paid you to stand there and do...almost nothing. Just....stand there. Perfect job for Lucky, probably his dream just as it was theirs. Inheriting your parents house, farm or property in general was the aspiration (assuming they owned any of these things and your siblings didn't get it instead) of future wealth. Our trailer didn't have running water in the winter, pipes would freeze between the well and the trailer. We hauled water from the creek to fill the backtub so we could flush the toilet. We used a kerosene heater to heat the place, which meant the living room and kitchen were a solid 50F on cold days, the rooms on the end a little colder. Or much colder. My friends affectionately referred to it as "The Hole". We never were proud of being poor folks in the holler, didn't even think of ourselves as poor really. We had food, and generally family. We hardly consoled ourselves in our poverty, ignorance, or inability to escape these circumstances by proclaiming how great it was to be redneck hillbilly white trash. It was just life. Certainly nothing to be proud of back then. Amazing events were when the holler party line became individual circuits, or with a bigger antenna we got 2 TV stations depending on which way the rabbit ears were turned. Grandma was just a 1/2 mile up the road, she had a woodstove and her place was warm and she always had a garden, and we would hang out there quite a big. Mom was never around, working full time during the day and then extra jobs nights and weekends to keep the trailer and pay for stuff in general.

Yes...how we reveled in being poor and generally ignorant of...most everything. We wore it like a badge. <snicker snicker>

Amusingly, claiming redneckhood is used as some form of badge of honor nowadays, as you've just implied. I don't know when that happened. I cleared out and discovered a world beyond the holler, and eating squirrel and running a trap line, and carrying water from the creek to flush the toilets. I remember being awe struck the first time I ordered a pizza in college and they brought it to my dorm room! Still remember how cool that was.

I lived in places other than the suburbs as my career progressed, from the swamps of Louisiana to hotels and mancamps near the Arctic Circle in winter, but I settled in suburbia about the time my first was born, and stayed there until they graduated college. Moved into a new place just last year more out in the open (but will be a suburb if I live long enough I imagine).

But it is ironic....redneck now means something different than it once did. Someone buys a 4X4 and hauls blow up kid toys around in it and because they own a gun and a truck...redneck they are. With running water and store bought food. Whoa iz them.

I understand the feeling. I tried talking the wife into at least 5 acres and enough of a barn for her to get some of those silly fluffy cows or a herd of dogs or something, I have always enjoyed the forests and hills and open spaces, without the lifestyle that came with it when I was young, but she is a townie. What can you do...she's my partner in crime across many decades now and when she's happy, so is everyone else. :)

Amusing that you would confuse a highly useful tool with a hatred of all other tools? I have owned 4 Camrys in my lifetime, as opposed to just 2 Leafs. Does that mean I hate Leafs less than Camrys? Nitwit. And I don't live in a city anymore. I did when I was in suburbia raising the kids, and even then it wasn't Boulder. Nor is it now. Not even a nitwit, but a halfwit. Not at all. Never heard much of anything from politicians. TV wasn't the soul sucking time waster it appears to be in the modern world. I remember watching some of those TV shows, entertainment stuff. Gilligans island reruns? Love Boat maybe? Never knew I was poor until I left for college. The only entrance of politics in my young life was when my mother, as part of a group of concerned citizens who wanted to change the local school board, took me wherever I needed to go to register to vote as soon as I turned 18. Then I voted as mom told me. Was my senior year in high school.

Never had much use for politicians. The only memorial election I remember being involved in was David Duke Vs Edwards in Louisiana. That was wild, bumper stickers were "Vote for the crook, its important". Thought it was a riot.

I couldn't survive anywhere in LA. Normal non-crazy bonkers suburbia is bad enough, but the times I've been in and around LA it just sucks. The traffic is amazingly bad, the hotels regardless of where I'd stayed while in town were surrounded by an alien feeling environment, people were getting high and poking themselves with needles and smoking weed outside hotels I stayed at on the beach and they had no A/C but it was warm and that stench ends up in the room, it was just awful. The Angeles Crest Highway. I'd go back to that again. But otherwise give me the north rim of the Grand Canyon any day. The Basin and Range. Nowhere Montana, or the UP of Michigan. MAINE!

I would lump San Fran in with LA. I've camped south of San Fran along the coast, the coast highway was nice, and once you clear the city to the north things get nicer.

Like every big city LA got it all. The run down shit and the out-of-this world money. If I was forced to live in a major city, the south west would be my choice, somewhere along the coast. But luckily no-one forces me and I'm free to live my small town life. :-)

yep. California no doubt is extremely beautiful. Just way too many people. The redwoods, Gorgeous. Havent been there in 25 years. Maybe it's time for a road trip? Do we still have oil for that? :)

Well that just sucks. I crossed center in a corner on my motorcycle and was hit by a pickup truck, front driver side. Woke up in a hospital with a compression fracture of the spine. When I went to pay fines issued for crossing center and failure to maintain control and being a stupid kid and whatever, the sheriff eyed me up, all bruised and battered and crutching around, and scratched off everything except the failure to maintain control. I thanked him, and asked if he could get me the person's address so I could apologize for hitting them and ruining their day. Sent the lady an apology for being a incompetent rider. Took 6 months before I could sit without pain on a narrow motorcycle seat, and a month after that went to the racetrack for the first time to learn how to not be a stupid kid.

Doesn't matter who makes the mistake, the rider of the motorcycle usually comes out the worse for it.

Gave up my "unlimited" motorcycle endorsement last year. Mostly, I owned trail bikes, they were street legal, but due to the gear ratios, topped out around 70 MPH. When taking my initial motorcycle driving test as a 16 year old, there was a middle age man taking the same test on a fully decked out Harley D 1200. Sometimes on the maneuvering portion he had maybe an inch of space to get the handlebars through. I was very impressed.

Besides, I'm allergic to road rash. 8O 8O

My very first computer program project was in Fortran 4, it told me how fast I had to go to make a predetermined jump. Variables were ramp angle and distance required. Got an A for it.

Of course I had to go out and try it in the real world, it worked fine. Math is everything.

Back to electric vehicles, I'm a little surprised how many middle aged adults are afraid to take a ride in ROW-B. Kids and younger adults don't have this problem. Surprisingly, a LOT of us seniors, also have no trouble taking a ride. I attribute that to avoiding the day when the kids take your keys away. Old people want to keep their autonomy, right now Tesla has the only Key.

I thought the comments in those videos above were instructive because the anti-EV ones, by far the Majority, were all basically intelligent observations, and diverse one from another. The Positive comments on the girl's video on the other hand were all slavish ooo ahhh and copycat posts about how "they too" had saved money over the years. Those claims are not unreasonable either, if you buy an EV and by virtue of range anxiety and charging difficulties aren't driving the same miles you once were you'll certainly save money.

I know a woman who installed solar and then went on to claim she was making an absolute fortune in tariffs! Well she was certainly ahead of the other solar powered homes I knew of in terms of income, but when the full story came it she was basically turning everything off when the sun went down and sitting in the dark. It had become an obsession with her. Instead of being simply a means to reduce her bills she had twisted herself into a pretzel allowing the technology to dictate when she could eat hot food or wash dishes. This is akin to what the average EV owner does. Not by choice, but by necessity.

Alas the average EVidiot out there doesn't see this, they don't see any downsides to their choice because they have happily changed their lifestyles to suite the limitations of the car. And if that was the only downside they could be forgiven for their zealotry and treated like the retarded nephew, a smile and a pat on the head. But unfortunately for them it goes a lot deeper, with battery degradation and poor resale value coming down the road. But these are things the average EVidiot has yet to face so lets just pat them on the head for now and deal with the temper tantrums when they come in the years ahead :-D

Are you in America? I only ask because I know there are levels of motorcycle licenses in places like Europe and maybe Japan, but hadn't heard of it before in the US.

I bought the wife a Kawasaki ZL00 Eliminator, way back in the day, when she decided to learn to ride, rather than just sit on the back of mine. I couldn't PUSH that bike through the cone course required to get her license because of the length of its wheelbase. So I bought some little 100cc street legal dirtbike looking thing just to do the course to get her her own license.

Years later she crashed my FZR400 in one of the usual beginner ways before I had a chance to even get it on the track. She was okay, but the road rash, bumps and bruises and contusions had her in a bed for a couple of weeks.

Road rash sucks. LEATHER ONE PIECE RACING GEAR FOR EVERYONE! Mine proudly bore the scars of racetrack get-offs, with a single scratch on me inside.

I believe that. In my mom's early days of Alzheimers before I even suspected she had it, she began to make driving mistakes and bumping into other cars. Then she eased out of driving without really saying why. It took me awhile to catch on independently, she tried to hide it for as long as she could. She never wanted to admit she had the disease, let alone give things up. I thought she was just more interested in staying home and hanging with the neighbors. Then I took her and Pops on a trip and things began to fall into place. Sundowners being the one big clue.

While Gasoline is a whopping $1.83 cheaper per gallon than three years ago, U.S. electricity prices are continuing to rise, outpacing inflation, and are expected to continue rising through 2026.

So what happened to early promises of EV's being almost free to drive? Yes they said that, "They", the marketers. Just like the marketers of BTC once said it was a stable form of money that protected you during downturns in the economy. Every Ponzi scheme has an underlying product that gives it legitimacy in the eyes of the investors, For those that invested in the electric car transition it was the mass of new EV flooding the market.

As has been said, the Electric concept has it's niche, and that was well serviced at the beginning by the Toyota Prius HEV and then the Nisan leaf BEV. Little bitchBoxes that those wanting an oil free life could buy. It became a ponzi when Tesla entered the market, a company that never made a profit and never paid a dividend and was eventually bailed out by the federal government with tax credits it could sell to established car makers. The Lies the EV was founded on have now all come home to roost in the garages of drivers across the world, but we've see it all before. The parallels between the unwind of the EV mania and the Segway mania are different in scale but identical in consumer regret. In the end the Segway became a ride for fat mall cops and warehouse pickers. The EV is turning into a ride for suburban hipsters and weekly shopping excursions. 1.5% of the driving public and declining.

Certainly in backwater areas, such as Australia and even in rural America, your figure might be true, but it isn't Australia, or rural America, where new technologies are hatched, or utilized until after they have become mainstream. There are places in America today that you probably can't even get decent internet, and the world now runs on broadband.

Just because those left out of better educations and jobs because they stayed in some backwater area, or in the case of Australia an entire country, doesn't mean that the world will stop moving forward. Just because you, the real life embodiment of a modern Neanderthal, don't like EVs, is irrelevent to the high school and college graduates interested in breathing better air, or caring about what the world for their children looks like, or saving money. You are allowed to be as ignorant a true believer as you'd like.

But it is noticeable that your cherry picking of information supports only the point of view you believe in...and you believing something certainly doesn't make it true. It just makes you a parrot for pre-conceived, ignorant, and backwater country ideas.

Odd? Tariffs make imports more expensive, locally produced product more affordable. So what's going on here? A Lie of course. Rivian desperately wants an excuse as to why people are no longer buying their EV and there is no other Lie big enough to explain away the sales collapse. 23% is not a fall, it's a bonified collapse.

So what's VW up to? Why do they want stock in a failing company... A tax write off no doubt, and the simple fact that they import tons of cars into the US. Some very expensive luxury cars.

4.8 Million! If they only made $1000 profit on each car that would cover their entire investment in Rivian. But of course they make a lot more.
So now you see the truth dear reader. they didn't buy into Rivian because it's a great deal and their software is the bees knees. Rivian is just another dog maker of EV garbage. So nothing to see, move on, move along please.
