Anyone found any good energy infrastructure - oil storage, refinery, open cast coal mines, LNG plants?

Yeah but the reverse-engineering of alien space crafts goes on inside so what's the point?

The area is reputed to be heavily patrolled, with prohibitions against entry, photography, and so forth. Google makes it possible to see the area inside with a mere click of the mouse.

The point is that our rules, regulations, and systems are not beginning to keep up with technology. That's an interesting state of affairs, don't you think?

Agreed, if your computer has the muscle to run it you can do 3D flybys of many cities, dive into the grand canyon or Mount St Helens or other interesting places. Resolution outside the US usually sucks though.

Outside of the US? Hell, When zooming on to my house, the closest I can get is 1500m resolution. It is impossible to get a closer resolution, (with google at least). Meanwhile, http://terraserver.microsoft.com works fine for it.

I saw the whole neighborhood where I grew up in pretty good detail on the first link. Uncanny. You zoom in from outer space and there it is!

There's a place in France,
Where the naked ladies dance,
There's a hole in the wall,
Where the men see it all,
But the men don't care,
'Cause they chew thier underwear,
And the underwear they chew,
Cost a dollar ninety-two!

Not one but two Register readers emailed us to tell us that MSN's Virtual Earth is promoting a world free of the menace of Apple Computers.

If you've got time on your hands - stand up Jens and Stefan - have a look at Apple's Cupertino headquarters from Google and MSN's rival map sites. Both sites offer aerial photos alongside maps. MSN's version is here and Google's is here.

See the difference? Google shows the Apple Cupertino HQ - a lovely, shiny building probably full of iPods. MSN on the other hand shows an apparently empty field. Not as much as a black turtle-necked jumper remains of Apple's headquarters. This could be no more than an old picture taken before Cupertino was built or a glimpse of an imagined future.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Google brings the Earth to you

Google brings the Earth to you

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')ugust 05 2005 at 09:20AM
New York - The world at your fingertips, with the click of a computer mouse.
That's what Internet giant Google is offering in a program allowing Web surfers to fly around the world in a matter seconds, hopping from one destination to another across the sky.
In "Google Earth", a user can download a picture of Earth, pick a spot on the planet and navigate through satellite and airplane photos of cities.
The program uses broadband streaming technology and three-dimensional (3D) graphics, "much like a video game", according to Google personnel.
The California company focused more on the United States than other places, but mapping out Europe is a "very high priority", said John Hanke, general manager of Keyhole, whose company was acquired by Google and came up with the technology.
In Britain and North America, the technology gives the latitude and longitude of an address. It can even pinpoint to a precise address by searching some buildings by name.
In the United States, 38 cities can be seen in 3D, a feature that has piqued the interest of real estate agents, Hanke said.

This is fantastic.

I spent all evening playing on it.

Found my house ok but the image could well be a few years old. Luckly my washing was not on the line.
