Peak Oil Google Maps

Unread postby TITAN » Thu 12 Jan 2006, 10:43:16

This website uses google maps to show groups of people where everyone is in that group. I created a group for peak oil, forward this on to others if you are interested...

Great Idea, I'm now ON THE MAP so to speak ;)

Nice to see how spread out we are, I would hate it if everyone was my next door neighbor ;)

This is excellent.. I'm on the map.

FYI those that are outside of the USA use the zoom and scroll controls on the upper left corner of the map to move around the global maps. You should be able to zoom in quite close to most of the populated regions around the world. I selected the hybrid mode as there are no detailed maps loaded for the Melbourne, Australia region as yet.

I look forward to discovering and contacting other peakniks in my region.

Cheers,
Jace

hmm the closest person to me lives in the parking lot of the warner pacific college according to the pin. I suppose the peak has hit and a giant SUV is now residence ;)

Since it can't locate my exact house I suppose I'll post my location. Gotta keep the stash hidden

Did anyone notice the "H Chavez" marker for Caracas?

And the note? "Nothing to see here, move along".

Too funny.

You use the scale on the left hand side to zoom out to see the world. Just keep hitting the minus sign.

Added myself to the map, in Missouri.

Seems that someone is living in the same general area as I am, in Ballwin. Their tag is stuck in front of mine, so mine is difficult to see when the map is zoomed out on the default setting.

Thank you for the heads up and link Titan. Looks like I'm the first one in Colorado.

Google Earth

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Thu 28 Dec 2006, 17:43:57

It's a downloadable program. We talked about it over a year ago. But I've since learned how to adjust the viewing angle so you can see things from the side. Mountains and valleys come into view unlike from just a top view. It's glorious! Yesterday I "flew" over the Andes from Peru and down the Amazon. I took a tour of southeast France down the Rhone through Lyon to Marsailles (beautiful country!). Anywhere in the world at the click of a mouse. My beloved Mt. Miguel here in San Diego lies at 32 41 50.58 N 116 56 06.98 W. It rises to 2505 feet from a nearby river valley at 343 feet. I climbed it as a kid. The house where I grew up is nearby to the north at 32 45 38.63N & 116 57 03.50 W You can see all the developement since that house was built in 1958. There was nothing between that house and Mt Miguel at that time. I have noticed some distortion by matching a view which I am currently painting with the version given by the algorithm of the program. It has it's limitations. Specially obvious when looking at something like the Eiffel Tower. Does anyone have the upgrade that has to be purchased? Is it better?

Great! Now all the kids will be sniffing glue, listening to Pink Floyd while surfing Google Earth.
