The land of the exceptional.

And what does an exceptional Australian look like? Are the rest of you jealous you didn't come up with the alligator wrangling, move to NYC and be popular idea to put Australia on the map?

Not sure what you mean. You object to Americans being exceptional? Or just the comparisons between American leaders and those who represent Australia?

Here is an honest question. Why is it called "Australian Royal Navy" if you folks aren't just another bunch of gutless sychophants that couldn't get free of the Monarchy in the last 250 years after the exceptional folks showed you how?

Did you know that the Gerald Ford class American aircraft carrier carries about the same number of aircraft that THE ENTIRE ARMED FORCES OF AUSTRALIA HAS?

And America thanks you for buying nearly all those aircraft from America. Maybe if you Australians were less like you and more like Americans they could build...you know...stuff? They are just...airplanes! American has been building them for 121 years! Sure you've been neutered by the Monarchy but that's your fault. GROW A PAIR already.

That is amazing. Is that true? Instead of fixing infrastructure and schools or lower taxes or lower deficit or protect its own borders the US spends it on carriers full of planes to protect nations that don't have an army? I even heard nato members don't need to pay membership fees because the US don't mind. What a crazy bunch, them americans.

It is! I was amazed as well. Wiki lists total Australian military aircraft around 90-95. The Gerald Ford lists out at carrying 90 or so. There is probably a give or take in there, as I found ranges of numbers for American carriers based on the type of aircraft they were hauling at any given time. Some numbers ranged up to about 135 if you stuck with just FA-18s.

Yup...instead of spending money on doing the things better that you mentioned (when not trying to overthrow the government for their own personal gain anyway) the US protects pussy countries like Australia that don't even have land borders that need protecting!

I am as floored by anyone with how America handles its exceptional business sometimes. I mean, nowadays we have these addled dementia patients that are convicted felon tax cheating don't pay vendors grifters acting as though being a philadandering liar while enjoying the benefits of being Jeff Epsteins buddy on his sex island qualifies them for running for President!

America is certainly in a sorry state as of late...but yes...we do protect pussy countries that can't do it for themselves.

Indeed. The good news is after Biden got in, NATO countries realized they should start kicking out that 2% because after their brush with the prior blowhard they sure couldn't count on America in the future, and in 2024 most countries are doing pretty good.

Spain, Portugal and Italy...what are you gonna do?

Supersonic passenger jets, Space travel, and other commonly held Dreams.

Remember the heady days of the Space Shuttle? Or perhaps you just want to forget them... After all they basically ran to a dead end with two disasters along the way. Predictable disasters too, because the engineers, when asked at the outset how safe the program was, all but one stated that 1:100 launches would end in disaster. The guy that didn't agree claimed there would never be a disaster and he was chosen for a top PR position in NASA. There were 130 launches and two ended in disaster. An even worse ratio than predicted, and a stat that tells you something about engineers and scientists. They tend to publish the "Best case scenarios" from their data.

The shuttle was born out of a SciFi dream, 2001 a space odyssey.

Image

We were off to the stars! Or so they said.

Before that was supersonic passenger travel, a great idea really, and it worked, and it was safe as the record proved. Right up until the end when an antique Concorde suffered a catastrophic accident due to a combination of air-frame age, pilot error with loading, and a 10,000:1 event involving some debris left on the runway by a previous takeoff. But the program was disbanded because it wasn't economically or environmentally viable. Economics killed the space shuttle too, just as much as it's safety record. The point is the Public was Amazed by these technologies and fully believed the Marketing surrounding them even though they were doomed from the outset. People thought they could see the future, endless supersonic trips, cheaper and cheaper once they sorted the tech out, and in the case of the shuttle, trips to the moon, blah blah blah.

The flying car has had many iterations over the decades and each time enthusiasm wanes more and more I suspect. People tend to have a fear of heights, but also tend to feel safe in numbers so they are happy to close their eyes and get on passenger jets which though they often have catastrophic crashes are still relativity safe. But alone up there? I'm sure they would even board a passenger jet though if a computer was in total control and no pilots were up front. That's just how people are.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')riverless trains have been operating on this London rapid-transit system since 1987. However, a train attendant is still on board to open and close doors, and to take control in an emergency.

Now we come to the latest craze, the latest bit of futuristic hopium, the Electric car. Ignoring all the previous EV failures, this time "they have got it right" We're off to the stars at last, or at least off to the lake for a picnic without having to worry about nasty pollution or mechanical failures and all the other downsides to neolithic driving. Muck is behind it and he's a Wizard! Biden and all the other World leaders are 100% behind it, it's a given, a no brainer. Well that was certainly how the public approached it, with no brains, just a head full of Hopium and marketing. Like my friend who recently signed up for a Ford F150, known down here as a Ford Ranger. "It has a 10-speed auto box" he told me at length, explaining all the benefits of this and how it keeps the engine in the right part of the torque curve etc etc. He was parroting the salesman, who was parroting the brochure. He knew nothing about the class action in the states related to this tragic transmission. These tucks are junk and have many points of failure.

Caveat Emptor. My guess is he doesn't even know what this phrase means.
the principle that the buyer alone is responsible for checking the quality and suitability of goods before a purchase is made
So now we have millions upon millions of saps that rushed in and bought EV's. Stuck with them now they have to gut it out and because we all have an EGO they will pretend for the most part that it was a good decision. It suits their lifestyle to have to recharge every day and to limit their trips to only so many miles. They love being able to visit the coffee shop or movies for an hour or so while it's recharging, they don't care if a given charger is broken or won't accept their app, there is another just across town, they are content to drive the extra 20 minutes Yes, that really is a No Brainer in my opinion

But now it's over, now that we are faced with unwind, with the mountains of stranded assets to deal with. The Concorde and the Shuttle too left behind a pile of stranded assets and a legacy of wasted money, but nothing like the waste pursuing the EV. Just the damage caused to the Planet with the ramp up of Lithium and Cobalt mining is staggering! Not to mention the waste of rare earths, copper and steel. I suppose in the scheme of things it's not that big a deal. The limits to growth was going to be reached regardless of this folly so what if it shaves a few more years off the day?

It is called old news to the countries that built supersonic passenger jets and those countries who have been sending people into space for decades now. We're cheering you on though Lucky....you can get that diploma even in your doddering years and learn some stuff!

In my next post we'll look at Belgium and the disaster awaiting the corporations there as they went all-in EV because of Government tax codes. See if you can see the looming problem.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')early one in four new cars in Belgium are fully electric, but where people buy them and how they are paid for varies considerably between regions.

While the car market remains fairly stable, with similar trends to last year, the national automotive federation Febiac reported a big shift towards electrification in the first half of 2024. This comes as Belgium's car market is doing very well, said Febiac's CEO Frank Van Gool. Corporate preference: Electric vehicles are becoming the preferred choice for company cars.
Of the 64,404 new electric cars registered in Belgium in the first half of 2024, over three-quarters (77.7%) were registered in Flanders. This is partly due to the large number of leasing companies based in the region.

Yes it's true! Amazing hey! I posted here just the other week that their front line bombers the U2 or whatever they are have begun stationing here at our bases. They cost like 2 Billion each, that's like thousands of miles of good motorcycle roads, Or over 1/4 of a million homes fitted with free solar panels. The Government here pays for all that. I hear in amerwica the homeowner pays it ALL, and gets Raped by finance companies into the bargain, because in amerika no one has any money to pay upfront. Strange country...

Of course one day the party will end, but Australia is very good at tooling up, in WWII we were making state of the art Beaufighters here by the hundreds. The Japs called them "Whispering Death" Plus our soldiers did all the hard yards up in the south pacific. MacArthur was so pissed he wouldn't let us fight in the final conquests. That's ok though, the US troops were dangerous. Always giving away their positions by talking all the time, chewing gum and smoking, shooting as many of themselves as they shot the enemy sometimes. We helped them by securing the southern flank then let them go on their merry way. Strange people by all reports.

Stranded Assets

As the article above reports, Belgium has experienced a big shift towards electrification in the first half of 2024 with "Electric vehicles becoming the preferred choice for company cars." These are all Leased cars of course and many of the privately owned EV's are held on Lease as well. But the public as a whole has rejected the EV because... All the usual reasons. Now the Leasing of cars requires that at end of lease they can be sold, into the public, at a reasonable price thereby making the whole operation financially feasible.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')Leasing model behind Europe's EV drive at risk of breakdown
Aug 13 (Reuters) - Low resale values for electric cars have pushed the leasing firms that drive Europe's auto market to double prices over the last three years and some are threatening to quit the business altogether if regulators force them to go electric too fast, industry executives say...

Leasing companies play a pivotal role in Europe as 60% of new cars of all fuel types are leased...
When it comes to EVs, the proportion is estimated to be as high as 80%. The price of a lease is designed to account for the depreciation of a vehicle over the typical three-year lease period, based on estimated resale prices, or residual values. But if second-hand prices end up being lower than anticipated when the lease ends, leasing firms take a financial hit when they get the vehicle back.

According to figures provided to Reuters by data firm Autovista, resale values for EVs in Germany in early July were 24% below pre-pandemic levels and 30% lower in Britain.
That's in stark contrast to second-hand petrol models, which remained about 15% more expensive in both markets.
https://www.reuters.com/business/autos- ... 024-08-13/

So here's the issue, corporations have been buying EV hand over fist and now expect the public to buy them secondhand, but the public doesn't want them. Stranded assets. For sure a few of the first round of offerings will be snapped up if the prices are low enough, but we can see the conundrum here as the used EV's begin piling up and up. leasing companies doubling costs for EV will no doubt see corporations switch back to ICE, if they don't then a tripling of Lease costs and more may eventuate until a balance is found between the resale price of the mobile iPads and the number of consumers willing to take on the risk of a half dead battery.

Personally I see this unwinding very fast because the consumers of Europe are maxed out already and a depression is imminent. The average person, the average secondhand buyer that is will be thinking longevity now, a car that will last and last. It doesn't matter that they won't be planning long trips, a tank full of Gas might last them two months, but an aging battery is sure to die within a decade no matter how often it's used so only a fool would choose that option.

But either way it's clear there will be millions of ex-lease EV's piling up across the EU, parked in lots with no buyers in sight.

And across the pond?
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')pr 26, 2024 Hertz reveals it will reduce its EV fleet by an additional 10,000 cars, after suffering higher-than-expected depreciation of its electric models. The rental giant, which has recently seen its CEO resign, will sell off 30,000 EVs this year after posting a loss of $392 million in Q1 2024

Earlier in the year
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'J')an 11, 2024 — Hertz is dumping 20,000 EVs, a not-insignificant portion of its roughly 50,000-EV fleet (as of October)

It's the great awakening, the people have finally discovered the Emperor has no cloths, and they are...

Warning for those in flood effected areas!
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')Florida Officials Warn Of Electric Vehicle Fires Sparked By Hurricane Milton
“You can put your electric vehicles up high,” Castor said in the press conference. “Make sure you are elevating all those electric batteries and electric items as well because those batteries—once they start on fire—they cannot be extinguished.” She added that some houses were lost during Hurricane Helene two weeks ago to fires sparked by saltwater flooding electric vehicles.

Prior to that storm, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also warned residents of the risk of fire from electric vehicles and flood waters, as contact with saltwater can short-circuit the batteries, causing a chain reaction known as thermal runaway in which heat energy is released from the battery to cause a fire. The City of Tampa mobility department noted all parking fees were removed in anticipation of Hurricane Milton to encourage more EV users to take advantage of above-ground parking. “The CFO’s Division of State Fire Marshal has confirmed 48 lithium-ion battery fires related to storm surge from Hurricane Helene, with 11 of those fires associated with EVs,” the agency said in a fire safety alert to Florida residents.

What about Tesla powerwalls?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')tay out of the water if any part of the battery, Gateway, or wiring is submerged. Turn off Powerwall, then turn off the AC breaker to Powerwall. Turn off the AC breaker to the Gateway. If possible, protect the system by finding and stopping the source of the water, and pumping water away.

Ok, got it! But how do I stop the storm surge? That would be a neat trick.

Will juice box EV chargers become stranded assets?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ') --Enel X abruptly left the U.S. market with no initial plan for JuiceBox support, functionality
--JuiceBox line is among the most prevalent U.S. home smart EV chargers

If you’ve come to rely on smart EV charging as part of your daily routine, and you have one of the most popular smart chargers in the U.S., you might soon have to come up with an old-tech backup plan.

Earlier this month, the EV charger provider Enel X sent out a message to U.S. users of its smart chargers—including the JuiceBox line—essentially stating that in nine days it was pulling the plug on its charger business in the U.S.

That potentially meant the end of ongoing support of its smart chargers, which require Enel’s servers to function. So its “smart” chargers, which consumers had paid a premium for, might essentially become “dumb” chargers, reverting to base settings. That might retain their functionality as chargers, but render them unusable for all the smart-and-connected reasons buyers chose them. They'd no longer be able to initiate charging via a smartphone, even at home, or monitor a charging session on the app, as those things depend on the company's servers.

The move sent shockwaves across the EV sector, and it begged some important questions that haven’t yet been addressed beyond the small print users likely skipped over in the app agreement. How long are companies that make smart, connected devices responsible for supporting them? What happens when something as substantial and essential for daily transportation, like an EV charger—one that’s been top-rated by experts for years, and widely supported by automakers and charging programs—is suddenly “bricked” due to lack of support of the brand behind it?
https://www.greencarreports.com/news/11 ... ts-support

Tip of the iceberg really, but a Huge issue for the EVidiots since a lot home charge. These days I feel like I'm looking down on the titanic on that fateful night, she's taking on water and only has hours to live but the majority of the passengers on deck are still playing with ice and sipping champagne. All the damage was hidden below water of course and I'll wager there are thousands of informed people across the globe who work in the industry and know it's fate but are yet to speak out.

Re: THE Electric Vehicle (EV) Thread pt 15

I see Elon Musk has fully embarked on his new image, a sort of an 'overwrite' of the operating system from prophet of tech to a reborn Paul Revere, with million dollar a day cash giveaways "because that's america." His empire (a personal one) is based on marketing himself as someone special, someone worth paying more for, a sort of luxury brand. But with the demise of EV the brand was in danger of tarnishing. Not anymore though, Elon 2.4 is a slick new operating system with enhanced patriotism and free speech packages and the desperate faithful are lapping it up. Now seen as a Hero in this dystopian political saga he is combating the forces of evil. Trump and Musk, Batman and Robin if you will, here to clean up Gotham and make America Great... Again.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he promotion began on Saturday night. It runs until November's election and is open to anyone who signs his online petition supporting the US Constitution. "One of the challenges we're having is, like, how do we get people to know about this petition?" Musk told the audience of blue-collar workers, many of whom were youngsters with families, adding, "This news, I think, is going to really fly."

"Earn" You're not earning that money, you're winning it. That's what a giveaway is. But in a world where Black is White and Credit is Debt it's a small distinction. Go go over to twitter (now X) to sign up.

Twitter cost someone a lot of money, and while I'm sure Musk put in billions, the big banks were right in there too because everything today is done with debt. It's a private company, Elon's company, but what if "You" could buy into America's Freedom. Wouldn't you want a piece of that action? the X (formerly twitter) platform can easily be made public again, and the IPO would have strong demand and a huge opening price so long as the "Brand" is trusted. Why not sell those flagging Tesla shares and buy in? Time will tell if that happens but it's the logical course of action.

Space X isn't a listed company either but it's share price is touted at $80. You can't buy in but many wealthy people own a chunk. Elon reportedly) holds a 40% stake https://spaceexplored.com/guides/spacex-stock/

It's all Money and Profit, that's what drives the nation and the Grift must go on, and on and on. It's amusing to see people rush to the defense of Elon, and by association, the Banks and FatCat investors surrounding him. Elon is a Legend, Fighting for America and American freedom. Who cares if he milks the pension accounts of the elderly to get there, I just want a piece of the action too!
We're 17 years past the peak now and the 3rd World is going hungry and dark. We'll be next, we're well on the way in fact.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('theluckycountry', ' ')to the defense of Elon,

I stand in awe of Elon's achievement. Flying a rocket into space, building a car company? Stuff like that I can only achieve in video games. My considerable achievements in engineering are child's play in comparison to what Elon did. He actually builds stuff whereas his contemporaries, the greedy jew zuckerberg and the glorified peddler jeff bozo are exactly that, a greedy jew and a glorified peddler.
