$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'Q')uote:
To my knowledge the Bible has been put together in its more or less current version in the 12 th century by the then contemporary clergy, weeding out scriptures that they found unfit to be included . There was a wealth of additional texts. A current example would be the findings in the caves of Qumran, but then again, why working on a book of laws rather than an interactive one...

The fascinatingly twisted history of the bible here:

the "old" testament:

Crackpot theories. Anyway, even if there were certain texts not included, i can guarantee none of them said God wanted men to put each others cocks up their arses. Sorry to dissapoint you.

The "Bible" underwent major text edits throughout Christianity's history. The early Council meetings in the 4th century did a lot of cleaning up (this is recorded in mainstream history i.e. the Nicene Creed in response to Arianism). IT is interesting that homosexuality does not feature in the New Testament and Evangelists rely on the Old Testament to attack homosexuals.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he "Bible" underwent major text edits throughout Christianity's history.

The history of the gospels is especially hilarious.

1. Not a single original text of any gospel survives. The sources of the copies of the copies are not recorded.

2. There were many more than 4 originally written (Thomas, Mary, Peter, etc) Iraneus's rationale for selecting the canonical 4 was this: $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')t is not possible that the Gospels can be either more or fewer in number than they are, since there are four directions of the world in which we are, and four principal winds...

3. The earliest copies circulated anonymously, and the names--Matthew, Mark, etc--were added later. Eusebias tells us that Papias told him that someone called "the presbyter" told him that "Mark" wrote down everything that Peter said...etc. Worse than a game of "telephone."

4. They have been tampered with. For example, Mark magically grew several new endings in the 2nd century, probably out of dissatisfaction that Jesus never makes an appearance after his death. Also, the famous woman taken in adultery scene appears in several places in early editions of John, and also in Luke.

5. The anonymous writers of Matthew and Luke plagiarize Mark, and a lost gospel called "Q." These early writers, dissatisfied with "Mark's" version of the story and wanting to incorporate the sayings of "Q," rewrote Mark independently, hoping to supercede him.

Carrier also has a fabulous DVD of a debate between himself and Mike Licona, called "On the Resurrection of Jesus Christ."

Rate the AVATARS

Postby pea-jay » Wed 27 Jul 2005, 03:14:32

Some of us have them, all of us see them, those miniscule pictures that supposedly "represent" us or our ideals.

But after one year plus of Peakoil.com, we've never really judged them.

I think that time has definately come.

What's your vote for:

* The wittiest/most comical
* The most disgusting
* The dumbest
* The most artistic
* The most cliched
* The avatar or avatars you simply just don't get

If you want to submit a previously posted avatar for consideration, go right ahead.

As for my current avatar, it comes from an oil field not far from me. It's a small field (producing 39K barrels a YEAR) but yet so very much emblematic of our overall oil production situation. I have driven by this particular well an number of times over the past few years and seen it operate. Much to my bemusement, the last time I passed by it I saw huge lettering stating "out of service."

Well, I'll go first

I can't think of a best of at the moment

I think the most disgusting one by far is the pic of the guy picking his nose and having it pop out his eye

The dumbest one at the moment I nominate Stupid_Monkeys

The most artistic is a toss up between Lorenzo's pics and LOTRFAN's latest Avatar.

I think anyone who has a pic of an OIL well is certainly cliched
(yep, mine is cliched. Sorry)

The oddest one I remember was John Denver's with the wierd bubble face

I would give MicroHydro's Avatar the award for the most peaceful. It reminds me of one of the waterfalls up at Dworshack resivoir. It looks peaceful. I wish I were there.

PenUltimatemanStanding's Avitar reminds me of what we will be staring at at the end of the oil age. A bunch of twisted and rusting metal that used to compose the skeletal structure of decaying relics from the industrial era. Blackened is the end.

KillJoy's avitar just is wierd. I don't know what it means. Is it a picture of some guy tweaked out?

Decaulling's avatar reminds me of the enemy we face every day, sight unseen, and those that do see the face of the enemy are still thrown off by the sun glasses and hood. If those that have seen the hooded terrorist were to see the perpetrator unmasked, he would not be recognised until it was too late. The Unibomber embodies the US Government. It appears to be one thing, but is actually more evil than suspected.

Nero's Avitar reminds me of either of two things. 1. "Play me a sad song." 2. Ceaser fiddling while rome burns. Either one would be adequate for PO comparison.

Thanks PenultimateMan, it indicates the ordinary citizen who smells the rat. He starts digging and ends up at PO! What an epiphany... I myself like Killjoys new avatar eventhough his screen name is not particulary enchanting. Or to modifiy topic of the tread - his avatar impoved the most. (Nothing against Devine).. Baby Peanut also improved!

The most symbolically apt avitar now, I think, is MonteQuest's sunset picture, i.e. get ready for the long dark night. (my old avatar of Saturn Devouring His Children seemed very apt too, but I got tired of it and wanted a change.) I used to enjoy mindfarkk's avitars but I haven't seen her around lately. Two people that I would like to see get an avitar are Madpaddy and Threadbear. Finally the avitar that you-can-spend-the-most-time-staring-at is Aaron's walking stick man with the car antenna ball head.

See, k_semler, how Modern Art can actually have evocative power and interest? That's Franz Kline, American Abstract-Expressionist painter from the mid 20th Century.
