That “lack of trust” thing? That sounds a lot like a bunch of the AGW deniers who say scientist are just making up climate change to keep the research money rolling in.

The number of people killed by the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is expected to exceed 1,000 on Friday, the World Health Organization has warned.

Weekly infections have been rising since late February, with attacks by armed groups and a failure to win community trust undermining the response to the epidemic.

Since the outbreak began in August, 1,510 cases have been recorded in North Kivu and Ituri provinces, according to figures released by the DRC’s ministry of health on Thursday, while 994 people have died of the disease.

Ebola spreads to Uganda

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/06/11/heal ... index.html

Ebola situation is getting worse
(CNN)The Ebola outbreak that has infected more than 2,000 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now spread outside the country, the World Health Organization announced Tuesday.

A 5-year-old Congolese boy was diagnosed with the virus in Uganda, the country's Ministry of Health and WHO said.
"The child and his family entered the country through Bwera Border post and sought medical care at Kagando hospital where health workers identified Ebola as a possible cause of illness," WHO said in a statement.

There have been a couple of recent incidents moving Ebola to Uganda. There have been at least 2 reported recent vectors which have reached into Uganda. The one below and another.

Unless Ebola goes airborne, as a transmission vector, it will always be a lethal but a local disease. I know it makes for a lot of drama when there is an outbreak but there it is.

Agreed. Yet the more it’s around the greater chance of it going airborne. That’s the real reason for keeping a weather eye on this topic.

Ebola death toll in east Congo outbreak climbs above 2,000

By Djaffar Al Katanty and Aaron Ross

GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - The death toll from Democratic Republic of Congo's year-long Ebola outbreak has climbed above 2,000, government data showed on Friday, as responders battle to overcome community mistrust and widespread security problems.

The government team overseeing the response said the number of confirmed and probable cases had also hit a milestone of more than 3,000 in what has become the second-worst epidemic of the virus on record.

So as of May 15, you said this. Now you're all alarmed about 2000 deaths, 106 days later.

So let's do a little math, shall we? Rounding everything down, to give you the benefit of the doubt:

1600 * 1.03 ** 105 = 22.27

1600 * 22.27 =

35,632 (again, rounding everything down).

So your giant red font spewing doom is similar to the never ending drumbeat of economic doom re the fast crash doomers.

Put away the red font and the hype UNTIL ebola has been PROVEN to be airborne, unless all you're about is shouting "look at me!!!!!!"

...

And yeah, I know, 2000+ is more than 1600+ but it's not exactly exponential growth, now is it?
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

East African country yet to comment on WHO rebuke, but had previously told UN health agency it had no cases of Ebola....

In a statement on Saturday, the UN health agency said it had learned of one suspected fatal case of the virus in Tanzania's commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, and two others but, despite repeated requests, was provided with no information from the country's authorities.

As a point of balance, instead of doom or fear mongering, I was watching "93 Days" on Netflix, and looked up "Ebola cure rate" and found this encouraging news:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')Ebola drugs show ‘90% survival rate’ in breakthrough trial

Ebola may soon be a "preventable and treatable" disease after a trial of two drugs showed significantly improved survival rates, scientists have said.

Four drugs were trialled on patients in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where there is a major outbreak of the virus.

More than 90% of infected people can survive if treated early with the most effective drugs, the research showed.

The drugs will now be used to treat all patients with the disease in DR Congo, according to health officials.

On Tuesday, two people cured of Ebola using the experimental drugs were released from a treatment centre in Goma, eastern DR Congo, and reunited with their families.

The US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which co-sponsored the trial, said the results are "very good news" for the fight against Ebola.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-49326505

So, while Ebola and any potential pandemic are damn scary, let's keep things in perspective.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')The survival rate among patients with low levels of the virus in their blood was as high as 94% when they were given REGN-EB3, and 89% when on mAb114, the agency said.

The findings mean health authorities can "stress to people that more than 90% of people survive" if they are treated early, said Sabue Mulangu, an infectious-disease researcher who worked on the trial.

(Blue font mine, for emphasis).

Now, whether logic and data can overcome fear and mistrust is, of course, an open question. But clearly if early treatment can result in a cure rate of over 90%, that's got to be a hell of a lot better approach than a cluture of fearful patients ignoring or hiding the problem.

While thinking about my last post, I thought "I wonder what the status is on work on effective Ebola vaccines?", and found this news from less than 24 hours ago:

https://www.who.int/news-room/detail/12 ... -countries

This is being reported by the WHO and major news outlets.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')The World Health Organization (WHO) today prequalified an Ebola vaccine for the first time, a critical step that will help speed up its licensing, access and roll-out in countries most at risk of Ebola outbreaks. This is the fastest vaccine prequalification process ever conducted by WHO.

Prequalification means that the vaccine meets WHO standards for quality, safety and efficacy. United Nations agencies and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, can procure the vaccine for at-risk countries based on this WHO recommendation.

“This is a historic step towards ensuring the people who most need it are able to access this life-saving vaccine," said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. "Five years ago, we had no vaccine and no therapeutics for Ebola. With a prequalified vaccine and experimental therapeutics, Ebola is now preventable and treatable."

Blue font mine, for emphasis.

Yes, a lot has changed in the past 18 months or so.

I had thought this last outbreak could be significant but it seems to have died back.
