UN warns of Ebola 'perfect storm' in DR Congo
The World Health Organization says outbreak could deteriorate rapidly because of attacks and mistrustful communities.

The World Health Organization says the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo could deteriorate rapidly because of attacks by armed groups, community resistance and the geographic spread of the disease.

"We are now extremely concerned that several factors may be coming together over the next weeks and months to create a perfect storm," WHO's head of emergency response Peter Salama told a news conference in Geneva on Tuesday.

Five new Ebola cases confirmed in eastern Congo: health ministry

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-heal ... SKCN1MG0PC

The current epidemic in Congo’s North Kivu and Ituri provinces has seen 140 confirmed cases since July, 108 of whom have died, according to the ministry’s daily bulletin, which has been reporting an average of one to two new confirmed cases per day in recent weeks.

The ministry said the five new cases were located in the regional hub of Beni, where attacks by rebel groups in the area and local mistrust of the Ebola response campaign have disrupted treatment and vaccination programs....

“We are very concerned about the potential for the virus to spread into Uganda, but also into Rwanda, South Sudan and Burundi,” WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday

+++EBOLA ALARM++++

KINSHASA - A second wave of the Ebola virus has been confirmed in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where an initial outbreak has already killed 125 people, a minister said Saturday.

The latest wave is centred in Beni, a town in North Kivu near the border with Uganda, said Health Minister Dr Oly Ilunga.

“We don’t yet know the scale of it,” he added. “The epicentre, which was in Mangina is now in Beni.” The two towns lie about 20 kilometres apart.

This second wave occurred as a result of community resistance to measures taken to tackle the disease, Ilunga said.

“The epidemic in Beni is high risk... and the situation is worrying.”

"...where an initial outbreak has already killed 125 people..."

"According to the CDC, an estimated 80,000 Americans died of influenza and its complications during the 2017-18 season"

I wonder if the CDC plans to evacuate personnel from the US? I'm sure that would also generate some big headlines. LOL

“There is a very real risk that this is going to be something we cannot cope with,” one aid worker said.

“I’ve never worked in such difficult conditions, conditions that are highly volatile, highly hostile and highly dangerous but which we really cannot begin to understand. I don’t want to sound unduly pessimistic but the situation is very close to spiralling out of control.”

Children dying of Ebola at unprecedented rate in Congo -health ministry
REPORTfrom Reuters - Thomson Reuters Foundation Published on 28 Oct 2018 —View Original
An emergency WHO committee said that the outbreak was likely to worsen significantly unless the response was stepped up

GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Children in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are dying from Ebola at an unprecedented rate due largely to poor sanitary practices at clinics run by traditional healers, the health ministry said on Sunday.

BBC NEWS
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-46167340
The latest outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo is the worst in the country's history, the health ministry says.

Almost 200 people have died since August, officials say, with more than 300 confirmed or probable cases.

A vaccination programme has so far inoculated about 25,000 people.

DR Congo has suffered long years of instability and efforts to relieve the disease have been hampered by attacks on medical workers.

"At this point, 319 cases and 198 deaths have been registered," health minister Oly Ilunga said.

"In view of these figures, my thoughts and my prayers go to the hundreds of families grieving, to the hundreds of orphans and the families which have been wiped out."

Congo voters barred over Ebola vote anyway, by the thousands
By Al-Hadji Kudra Maliro | AP December 30 at 11:16 AM
BENI, Congo — They were barred from voting in Congo’s presidential election. They voted anyway.

On Sunday, thousands of men and women gathered in Beni to cast paper ballots they hoped that someone, somewhere, might take seriously. Last week, the electoral commission made the surprise decision to bar some 1 million voters in Beni and Butembo, cities in eastern Congo affected by a deadly Ebola outbreak.

Protests followed the decision as people demanded to vote with the rest of the country. Ebola facilities were attacked. Health teams suspended work for days. The World Health Organization chief warned that “prolonged insecurity” could bring a spike in Ebola cases. Congo was dangerously politicizing the outbreak, the International Rescue Committee said.
