Ok here we go. A House bill to legalize the Devil's Lettuce and regulate it under the BATFE instead of the DEA. I support this move and it should have been Republicans proposing it.

I've been told that smoking weed will make me a fan of jazz music and fill me with a desire to date black men. But that might not be true. ;) My last experience with weed was 40 years ago so I'm guessing the stuff nowadays is stronger

I obtained some second hand information about an individual who started dosing on THC via pot smoking to control a neurological condition. It helped in the first year but then lost efficacy and resulted in an aggravated neurological state in the individual. This reminds me of the 1960s dopamine studies (L-dopa) one of which was aimed at curing catatonia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awakenings). Without understanding how the brain works, taking THC is just so much voodoo and it seems to be the norm that blind "fixes" for brain problems do not result in long term solutions.

It does look like the net effect of TCH intake is negative. Its therapeutic effects are grossly overrated.

There are some medical conditions where marijuana, namely the ingredient THC, is useful. Nausea with cancer patients, glaucoma, and some others. But lets be honest. Most people use it to get high. Just like people drink to get drunk or buzzed. I'm for letting people do that sort of thing if they want to.

People also sniff glue to get high......but society has decided to restrict glue sniffing because inhalant use causes severe medical problems.

IMHO the same logic should apply to marijuana. I believe society has the right to restrict the use of marijuana because it causes severe medical problems, including brain damage, schizophrenia and psychosis. AND unlike booze and cigarettes, marijuana causes medical problems for YOUNG people who use it. Even those pot users who do not become psychotic are statistically likely to lose IQ points and do poorly in school.

What kind of society are we if can't even protect our kids from things that cause brain damage?

When people have an overwhelming urge to use something they generally find a way of getting it. Is the juice worth the squeeze to stop them? Apparently a lot of states don't think so.

It doesn't cause Schizophrenia... It rather triggers Schizophrenia to happen in individuals that are already predisposed to having it. They just have it sooner rather than later. I don't think that is a valid reason for banning it when only one percent of the population is susceptible.

I agree young people shouldn't have access to it though as it could affect their brain development. All the more reason to legalize it with an age restriction of 21 like alcohol.

The incidence of psychosis and schizophrenia is going UP right now as marijuana is legalized and pot potency and use increases. A decade ago there were about 30,000 hospitalizations per year in the US due to marijuana and psychotic episodes---now as legalization spreads that number has rapidly grown and now has tripled to 90,000 hospitalizations per year.

You can't compare the two because Schizophrenia is genetic and Cancer isn't. Most people with Schizophrenia knew about the possibility of them having it from their family history.

Schizophrenia and psychosis aren't the same thing. Schizophrenia figures are not going up, that's nonsense, it's always been about 1% of the population. The pot does tend to be stronger these days so rookie users should be wary of that and not start off with higher THC pot. Psychosis from THC alone is only temporary in those that don't have Schizophrenia.

Since you brought up emergency room figures: if you care to look at figures of people that die each year from alcohol and tobacco it makes your increased emergency room claim look pretty weak. Used responsibly by adults pot is one of the safest things out there.

Even Gene Simmons who was anti-pot most of his life has now come out in favor of it:

Thats not quite true. A certain percentage of those people who have psychotic episodes triggered by their marijuana use develop long term mental health issues.

You are comparing apples and oranges. Yes, people who smoke cigarettes for 40 years develop lung cancer, and people who are alcoholics for extended periods time have severe health consequences. But people developing psychosis and other brain diseases due to their marijuana use are typically young. Its not unreasonable to be concerned about drugs that cause severe psychological problems and brain damage in some young people, and are associated with things like IQ drops in most young people who use pot.

Thats nice. But Gene Simmons isn't a medical doctor or a scientist---he's a second rate singer. I think when it comes to the health dangers of pot, I will pay more attention to what the scientists and doctors say, based on the latest scientific research.

PBS Newshour did a segment last night on pot edibles and psychosis. Doctors in Colorado are finding that pot edibles are triggering lots of psychotic episodes.

Marijuana in the US today is about 3-4 times more potent then it used to be. And new studies show that while low dosage marijuana makes people relaxed and friendly, high dosage marijuana makes people paranoid and even psychotic.

Low dosage marijuana gives people the munchies. High dosage marijuana causes scromiting.....convulsive screaming and vomiting that is very unpleasant and even fatal in rare cases.

And of course, the powerful marijuana available today tends to produce the "bad" effects on many people.

The thing with the edibles is they take an hour or so to kick in so you have to have experience in order to take the right dose that will give the desired effects. It's too easy for a newbie to underdose or overdose. Even though the overdose wont hurt you it might make you feel like you're losing your mind for a few hours.

Me? I quit smoking pot around the beginning of this year. I came down with some weird form of asthma from cigarette smoking and now I can't smoke anything at all. I was ready to quit though, the asthma just forced it to happen a bit sooner. Now I'm 4-5 months not having smoked anything and I feel better overall. :)
