PeakOil is You

PeakOil is You

THE Surveillance Thread (merged)

A forum for discussion of regional topics including oil depletion but also government, society, and the future.

Let me precede my comments by saying that I am not connected with the government in any way.

That being said, I have a number of friends in law enforcement, including some that work for the feds. I haven't mentioned this site specifically, but I have shared my copy of End Of Suburbia with them, and I email them the occassional bit of news.

I don't think you need to concern yourself about the FBI or others monitoring the site or doing anything disruptive. They're people just like you and I who do their job. They follow the rules; in fact, they are, by and large, more fastidious about obeying the rules than non-law enforcement types.

So as long as one isn't doing anything foolish - which would be in violation of the site's code of conduct anyway - one has, in my opinion, nothing to fear.

Not scared, just intrigued at how much truth there is to the whole cointelpro stuff. You hear of the odd site getting messed around like www.indymedia.org. I'd love it if my job was to read these forums, instead of them being a distraction from it

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')ot scared, just intrigued at how much truth there is to the whole cointelpro stuff

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')Rotterdam (ANP) – Rotterdammer police have arrested 4 people suspected of preparing an attack on Saturday morning. The suspects were discussing about firing rockets (fireworks) at airplanes during the Red Bull Air Race in an internet forum.

The men were holding their discussion at the Lunatic News site, an “independent fan site for fanatic Feyenoord supporters”. One of the suspects admitted he could set off a smoke buoy at the Erasmus bridge when the planes have to fly under the bridge. A spokesperson of the OM (public prosecutor) said that the police discovered the discussion at the forum and the 4 men were arrested.

I think Aaron has said in the past that from looking at the logs, a lot of folks from IPs originating from government organizations have visited. So I think odds are that they are keeping an eye on this site & others like it, for whatever reason.

If they do believe that peak oil is on the horizon (and they probably do), they're probably trying to keep an eye on any political movements that have the potential of civil unrest in the future, as well as any developments the CIA might have missed (hey, they still watch CNN, don't they?)

It's good policy to assume that anything you write online (and probably anything you email) is being monitored.

Jack is probably right that FBI types are fastidious about following the rules. The only problem is, the rules may not be what you would like them to be. And the rules may change, especially if times get rough.

Those visitors with open government addresses are just normal readers.

The site visits for surveilance purposes would come from common commercial IPs, or front company .com or .net addresses, never from an obvious government IP.

If governments had their fingers on the pulse of public opinion enough to worry about, they'd not keep doing the asinine things they keep doing.

I'd not worry a bit, just don't go breaking the forum rules, and keep the discussion on peak oil and associated worries, and that's it.

I actually know someone who's talked more than once about capping the Pres but I've not said anything because he's too lazy/chickenshit to be a harm to anyone. I figure he'll probably say something kinda dumb to a cop or something because he's not the sharpest tool in the shed, and let THEM report it!

Another one, 'outed' by PMS.

My belief is that if you post towards personal advancement or other high ideals, you will be able to relate well with your inquisitor both interpersonally and on a moral basis. You will be fine because you can easily explain yourself. The 'bad outcome' is sustainable.

But of course I hope for the best, most of the time And I never exclude the possibility of things turning out just fine, and better in substantial ways.

PMS - if I do, I'll happily tell them all about this chickenshit guy who keeps mouthing off about capping the Prez. It would serve him right! In fact, it would be a pleasure! I just don't want it to seem like something personal against him, just because we disagree on some political things. But if I get a knock on my door, then I have an excuse, I'll happily turn him in and take the Feds out for sushi too!

I read this article in this morning's San Jose Mercury News. I think it's a safe bet that we're being watched:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')hree decades after aggressive military spying on Americans created a national furor, California's National Guard has quietly set up a special intelligence unit that has been given ``broad authority'' to monitor, analyze and distribute information on potential terrorist threats, the Mercury News has learned.

Known as the Information Synchronization, Knowledge Management and Intelligence Fusion program, the project is part of an expanding nationwide effort to better integrate military intelligence into global anti-terrorism initiatives.

Although Guard officials said the new unit would not collect information on American citizens, top National Guard officials have already been involved in tracking at least one recent Mother's Day anti-war rally organized by families of slain American soldiers, according to e-mails obtained by the Mercury News.

lol maybe we should give the best posters a 'https' forum in the interests of 'personal security', if the feds don't have the decency to be friendly and join in like everybody else then they can be relegated to the uninformed forums!!!! :P to you sneakies!!!!

Just joking. I imagine a https to a fed is like putting a padlock on your garage full of stolen loot and assuming the cops can't get in!!!

NSA supposedly sucks down all communication traffic so if they want to find something they have their ways thanks to the best programmers that the gov. can buy.

Regarding those supposed terrorists in Holland. They must be total idiots. They better start reading a bit in the spy section of the library. Maybe that is why the Feds like to keep track of library records.

To see who is reading "The Code Breakers" :) :) :) :)

Anyone know what the law is regarding what you can get into trouble for saying? If I say that Im going to headbutt the capitol building till it falls over am I guilty of planning an attack? When does harmless conjecture and radical discussion become illegal?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Rickenbacker', 'A')nyone know what the law is regarding what you can get into trouble for saying? I

In the US, we have the First Amendment:$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he First Amendment of the United States Constitution protects the right to freedom of religion and freedom of expression from government interference. See U.S. Const. amend. I. Freedom of expression consists of the rights to freedom of speech, press, assembly and to petition the government for a redress of grievances, and the implied rights of association and belief.
...The most basic component of freedom of expression is the right of freedom of speech. The right to freedom of speech allows individuals to express themselves without interference or constraint by the government. The Supreme Court requires the government to provide substantial justification for the interference with the right of free speech where it attempts to regulate the content of the speech.

http://www.law.cornell.edu/topics/first_amendment.html

From what I understand, the UK has similar protections, but they don't have the primacy of the First Amendment.

Least protected is speech that incites to immediate violence or is an endangerment (Justice Holmes' quote that "shouting fire in a crowded theater" is not protected).

Being critical of the government in the US and similar countries is not illegal, otherwise 90% of the population would be in jail.

In times of war or disorder, the boundaries shift and governments become more aggressive in prosecuting speech that is critical (for example, opposing the draft in wartime). The big danger in such times is the hysteria that takes hold, as the anti-Communist witchhunts of the early 50s or the imprisonment of dissenters during World War I. For me, the period following 9/11 was particularly ominous; things could get pretty bad after another terrorist attack.
