$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('topcat', 'T')he game is not rigged; money, if used properly, makes more money.
There is something wrong with the system when a CEO's secretary pays a higher tax rate than their boss. There is something wrong when a rich industrialized country like ours has wealth inequality that you would normally find in a banana republic. There is something wrong when the richest 1% of the population nearly triple their share of the economic pie, by consuming 80% of the total increase in american incomes between 1980 and 2005.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'B')illionaire investor Warren Buffett will continue paying a lower tax rate than his secretary.“Counting payroll taxes, I’ll probably be the lowest paying taxpayer in the office,” Buffett told CNBC. Of the top 400 richest people, who might be making $200 million or $250 million a year, maybe half pay an income tax rate of less than 25 percent, he explained.
Buffett: My Secretary Still Paying Higher Tax Rate than I Am

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he richest 1 percent of Americans now take home almost 24 percent of income, up from almost 9 percent in 1976. As Timothy Noah of Slate noted in an excellent series on inequality, the United States now arguably has a more unequal distribution of wealth than traditional banana republics like Nicaragua, Venezuela and Guyana.

C.E.O.’s of the largest American companies earned an average of 42 times as much as the average worker in 1980, but 531 times as much in 2001. Perhaps the most astounding statistic is this: From 1980 to 2005, more than four-fifths of the total increase in American incomes went to the richest 1 percent.

In the past, many of us acquiesced in discomfiting levels of inequality because we perceived a tradeoff between equity and economic growth. But there’s evidence that the levels of inequality we’ve now reached may actually suppress growth. A drop of inequality lubricates economic growth, but too much may gum it up.

Robert H. Frank of Cornell University, Adam Seth Levine of Vanderbilt University, and Oege Dijk of the European University Institute recently wrote a fascinating paper suggesting that inequality leads to more financial distress. They looked at census data for the 50 states and the 100 most populous counties in America, and found that places where inequality increased the most also endured the greatest surges in bankruptcies. Inequality leaves people on the lower rungs feeling like hamsters on a wheel spinning ever faster, without hope or escape. Economic polarization also shatters our sense of national union and common purpose, fostering political polarization as well.

Let’s not aggravate income gaps that already would make a Latin American caudillo proud. To me, we’ve reached a banana republic point where our inequality has become both economically unhealthy and morally repugnant.

Poverty rate jumps in the suburbs

poverty growing rapidly in the suburbs

The poverty rate has jumped by 64% in the suburbs as a result of declining home values during the great recession, and continuing job losses, student loan debt, falling wage levels since 2008 during the WORST RECOVERY EVER. :(

This has been going on for decades now. It was only the burst of the housing bubble and the end to the home ATM machine that has brought it more to light. Average working folks had their wealth tied up in their property. While the wealthy have it in their investments. There are far fewer rich Americans that can take up the slack of consumption by the masses of consumers that no longer have the disposable income to expand the economy to escape velocity.

The bursting of the housing bubble didn't go on for decades as you claim---it occurred rather suddenly from 2007-2009 during the "great recession".

The current recovery is different from past recoveries in that US family incomes and wealth and housing values haven't recovered the way they did in the past after recessions ended. The current recovery is unusually weak.

The result is increases in poverty, food stamp use, debt, welfare, have continued from the recession right into the supposed "recovery." Thats one reason why this is the WORST RECOVERY EVER. :|

The housing bubble has been building for decades it only popped during that time.

Up until that point for middle America, the home was the only thing left of real appreciating value. Real wages have been flat for the average worker since the 1970s. At that time US capitalists redirected their money to production overseas, while also replacing millions of workers in the US with automation. Simultaneously, woman fully entered the workforce leading to an end to labor shortages and forcing wages and benefits down even further. With the exception of their homes until the end of the bubble, Americans have been getting poorer for the last 30 years.

That may be so, but think of how much women have improved morale in the workplace.

Besides adding to the glut of workers, women have given a short term boost to family income over the last few decades. This has now been absorbed by the average married household. As real wages have flattened or declined, housing values are still at record lows, credit is tapped out or unavailable to the average person, there is really no other source of available assets to draw from.

So, the pressure will widen to decrease wages even further, reduce benefits and push to raise productivity even more in order to create cost levels where corporations can still make profits on affordable goods and services to a public that is continually losing buying power.

In ends up being a real catch-22.

Happy Birthday, Obamacare!

Its the third birthday of Obamacare!

The birth of Obamacare occurred just 9 months after the beginning of the WORST RECOVERY EVER. Now that we are safely past the 2012 election, the bulk of the regulations and new taxes called for under Obamacare are starting to go into effect.

It will be interesting to see if Obamacare lives up to its promises, or if it just becomes another misbegotton policy of the Obama administration that results in higher costs and poorer medical care and acts to slow the economy even more during the WORST RECOVERY EVER.

Since the WORST RECOVERY EVER started in 2009, about 150,000 each month have found jobs.

During the same time period, about 250,000 people per month have left the workforce to go on social security disability. Some critics claim the SSI disability program has become a defacto welfare system, as huge numbers of people make claims under the program. Its clear that US unemployment would be far worse if over 8 million people hadn't claimed SSI disabilities since the WORST RECOVERY EVER began.

Last I looked, a recovery isn't really a collapse. While the current recovery is THE WORST EVER, that is primarily because of Obama's lack of experience in anything prior to becoming President.

No one cares much about Cyprus, the Europeans have problems even worse than being stuck with a leader with zero experience, and Cyprus ain't it.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')The vast majority averaged a mere $59 more in 2011 than in 1966. For the top 10 percent, by the same measures, average income rose by $116,071 to $254,864, an increase of 84 percent over 1966.

...This $59 increase for the vast majority covers a time longer than most people work. Back in 1966, the first Star Trek episode aired and Barack Obama started kindergarten.

Sure you do. You make up a claim, say, you suffer from "anxiety", and you apply for disability (maybe get a medical marijuana card at the same time). You get it. You mooch off the taxpayers. I've got one of these stinking parasites in the family, so I know the scam. This woman was damaged mentally by...get this..WORK. She worked in a hospital sterilizing everything from the instruments used in surgery to the food plates of patients. This work disabled her. She filled out the paperwork, and spent the next decade mooching off of my tax dollars contributed to social security.

In the meantime, companies can't find workers because Obama is busy manufacturing a supply for his "Come one moocher, come all moochers" program.

Yeah. I'll tell you what. I'll start worrying about the millions of dollars that moochers make from disability the moment you start worrying about the multi-billions that corporate fat cats hide away in offshore tax havens.

Yeah. I'll tell you what, the 'moochers' are TAKERS and those of us who actually pay taxes, pay for the MOOCHERS. The MOOCHERS don't do anything except drag down the economy. At least the corporations are MAKERS, and EMPLOY people. At least Wimpy (in the old Popeye cartoons) said he would "...glady pay you Friday for a hamburger today. Kinda like Barry H. O. who lies daily also.
