Something I pointed out a few days ago, the USA House of Representatives was frozen at 435 members in 1911. USA population has quadrupled in the last hundred years. Therefore I only get 1/4 the representation my grandparents and great grandparents had when they were voting.

It's not the numbers it's the partisan gerrymander that's carved up our representation in this country.

That (birthrate) is great news.

As I'm sitting here cogitating on the question, I hear a gunshot. In my 'hood that isn't a bad thing, someone's shot a whitetail. If the question is, 'is it too late to survive as hunter gatherers' then yeah, we're way too big for that. But are we too big to learn to live on a reduced level of consumption - if energy production only slowly declines? Not at all.

Using energy (of course) to look at the trend, it's easy to see that the US is begining to "bend the curve" - the trend would be even more obvious if this were per-capita...
Image

Obviously not everyone is happy about the way the curve is bending. I'm certain that we aren't bending it on purpose but that doesn't really matter does it?

If it's too late for us then looking at this map, other countries are so far over the cliff Wile E Coyote can't even grab 'em!

The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

Without going into all the reasons, that's how I see it, we are way over the cliff.

I'm not sure there is a technically feasible alternative, even if there was we would not do it. Human nature.

If you guys and gals haven't seen this yet it is worth a view.

It really graphically depicts, absent any black swan pathological or climate event, how unelastic our worlds population growth will unfold during this century....

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tanada', 'S')omething I pointed out a few days ago, the USA House of Representatives was frozen at 435 members in 1911. You mean because your representative has so many more constituents to cater to, therefore it is 4 times easier for you to get lost in the mix? Actually, I think the problem is a lot like that of measuring earthquakes, where magnitude is exponential and each number on the scale is 10 times as powerful, but each number also represents 30 times the energy being released. I think due to the complexity brought about in the quadrupling of the population there is far more than 4 times alienation. Big campaign money and interests assure this. In order to be heard it takes the average citizen way more than 4 times the effort to clamber(politics always requires clambering) about over the voices of their fellows, and especially their fellows as designated in corporate form. I for one would like to see the US build a new Capital Building capable of housing a House of Representatives large enough in number such that every member upon going home has the chance to hear what their constituents are really saying. How large is that? I don't know, but probably in the several thousands.

For the U.S., the problem isn't just population but over-consumption. The same applies to around 12 pct of the world's population that consume at far higher rates than the rest.

VM, you are off topic again--unless, of course, you are claiming that Mr. Rothchild has personally overpopulated the US.--FL
