$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TommyJefferson', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Loki', 'B')ut the enviro mvt is too afraid of being labeled racist--and too wedded to liberal politics--to actually tackle the biggest environmental problem facing our country.

That is sad.

Well, enviros would rather have people be poor in other countries I suppose. I'd actually prefer unlimited immigration myself.

Yep, everyone's quality of life would be so much better if America's population was a billion. Hell, why not two billion or three billion? The more the merrier, right? Maybe we can strive to achieve India's standard of living.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Loki', 'I')'m an unrepentant, unapologetic treehugger. I think turning a blind eye to over-immigration is by FAR the biggest mistake the environmental movement is making.

You can put that in all caps and take that to the bank.

I waited with baited breath, watching, hoping as the Sierra Club was on the cusp of taking a stance against immigration levels in to this country. They caved like spineless politically correct losers. I knew that environmentalism was dying, but on that day it was pronounced dead.

No more David Brower's or John Muir's in that organization. Just a bunch of beauracrats trying to sell calendars and knapsacks, who might save a subalpine meadow now and then that the loggers/miners/developers could never get to anyway.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('azreal60', 'S')eriously though, I love how people love blaming it on immigration when the average family around here is 3 children. And those three have three each, and so on and so forth. Having food makes us want to breed, biological fact. Less food, less breeding.

Your neighbors having lots of babies doesn't change the fact that population growth in many or most western industrialized countries (especially the US) is driven by immigration. This not a "theory" or someone blaming someone for something.

The cornucopian central planners, economists and bankers basically looked at the demographics of their countries and said "whoah! if we want to keep the pyramid scheme going, we better start importing people from countries with much higher breeding rates...and quick"

Every campesino that swims across the Rio Grande is a potential bank account, auto loan, renter, home buyer et cetera... This fact is certainly not lost on the people the pull the strings of our immigration policy. In other words "The gate is open! come on in."

The added benefit is that the bankers and financiers reap the benefits, and you get the bill. Your taxes will pay for their education, health care, infrastructure and other services. Plus you get the cost of resource depletion and a further degraded environment which convienantly doesn't show up on the books at Bank of America.

Common costs, Private profits. A classic case of the Tragedy of the Commons.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('emersonbiggins', '3')00,000,000 people means there's only 7.54 acres of land area per person. No more 40 acres and a mule for your common family of four - more like 30.

:)

Its actually around 4-4.5, discounting alaska, deserts and mountains.

True, I'm sure the arable land per person is well below 4 acres, not counting all the farmland that has gotten tilled under miles of sprawl.

A billion people in the US are wealthier than a billion people in India for simple infrastructure and legal reasons. More productive people are wealthier and have less children.

Hey! I was wrong.. The 700 mile fence INCLUDES $1.2 Billion in appropriate funds! I thought it was just an authorization that would have to be funded next year.

Dang, I should pay more attention.

Ok, so they will have fewer children next generation.

That doesn't change the fact that a billion people consuming on the same level as America would consume nearly 70% of the world's resources.

We don't have enough stuff to take care of a billion people in the United States.

Just take that 1,000 million people compared to 300 million people math.

300 million Americans use 20 million barrels of oil.

1 billion Americans would use 67 million barrels of oil.

We only produce about 7 million barrels regardless of the population.

So our oil imports would be twice the current production capacity of OPEC! 8O

Even though we live in the decade of the "3,000 mile caeser salad" and other such imported and beyond-boundaries consumerism, how much is the environmental impact of population growth still based regionally? Even though many immigrants move outwards, it's probably an issue with the south midwestern states because of immigration.

The unrelenting leftist that I am, I'm in favor of gentrification, abortion, sex education, assisted suicide and homosexual lifestyle to lessen the effect.

Like we've been saying:

U.S. population consumes its way to 300 million

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '"')The pattern of population growth is really the most crucial thing," said Michael Replogle, transportation director for Environmental Defense, a New York-based advocacy group.

"If the population grows in thriving existing communities, restoring the historic density of older communities, we can easily sustain that growth and create a more efficient economy without sacrificing the environment," Replogle said.

That has not been the American way. Instead, the country has fed its appetite for big houses, big yards, cul-de-sacs and strip malls. In a word: sprawl.

"Because the U.S. has become a suburban nation, sprawl has become the most predominant form of land use," said Vicky Markham, director of the Center for Environment and Population, an advocacy group. "Sprawl is, by definition, more spread out. That of course requires more vehicles and more vehicle miles traveled."

For one thing, their value system clashes with our own. The Hispanic contingent is a highly volatile, unpredictable electorate that is both rigidly religious, yet highly socialist in nature. The republocrats know that having such a large third element that can't split solidly to one side or the other is huge threat to the current political system. Having the Mexican electorate could possibly lead to the emergence of a new American populist party, perhaps of the Catholic flavor, which would almost surely start taking seats in Congress and possibly the Presidency as well. That is, if the Diebold machines stop doing their job...
