$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pops', 'G')ypsy bought the most sustainable car, or rather the type of car that uses the least energy, a used car. My '69 4x4 390cid ford pickup that gets 10mpg downhill with a tailwind ...

My car will run for a year without putting liquid fuel in the tank, 20 miles a day, even 40 miles a day. Unless Gypsy is manufacturing his own fuel, sooner or later, that tank runs dry. And then a "sustainable" car becomes 2 tons of scrap metal. While mine is still doing burnouts at stoplights far into the post peak apocalypse.

So your car just popped out whole from your credit card with no energy inputs?

Amazing.
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

Is it better to live 100 miles from where you have to go every day and have a car that gets 100 mpg, or is it better to live 1 mile from where you have to go every day and have a car that gets 1 mpg ?

There is no right answer for everyone. But there is a right answer for yourself.

Shorty's doppleganger must have spent what? $40k (they are about that here in Oz) on the Leaf/ that's a lot of dosh for a tiny car, even if they are $20k it's still a lot.

Diesel prices have been fairly stable around $1.40 litre here for the last few years. By the time I have spent 20k refuelling my old banger I will have driven it 350,000 km. Maybe an engine rebuild, a few bits and pieces, another $2k or so. How much will the Leaf or Volt have cost by the time it has done 350,000 km? How many battery packs would the leaf have chewed through? Also if the concern is CO2 emissions it's a bit rich to come over smug while running an electric car based on coal burning electric generation.

Ha! Love the baby in the bucket! Man would you go to jail in Australia if you tried that!
The little diesel car gets similar mileage to my trike in the Philippines; but is a tad more comfortable:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pops', 'S')o your car just popped out whole from your credit card with no energy inputs?

Amazing.

My car probably has the same amount of embodied energy as some old gas guzzler of one sort or another, most likely less because of modern, more energy efficient manufacturing techniques.

The beauty of my car is that the worse peak oil gets, the better it is to own than any gasoline/diesel powered one, plus it stimulates American fuel manufacturing rather than putting funds in the hands of various despots around the world.

10 years ago you couldn't hedge against peak oil this way, but you sure can now, and good thing too. Does anyone actually like to stop and fuel up, always held hostage by those little numbers changing at the whims of various speculators and banksters?

Depends on how you value your time I suppose.
