He has adquately defended the proposition that compressed NG is cheaper than gasoline. At least for now it is.

Cog is absolutely correct, as usual!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('JRP3', ' ')A CNG ICE ...already lost some of that energy due to piping losses and compression losses to get it into the vehicle..... Other than all that, good work as usual.

Thanks, but I don't think you've completely thought this through.

If you are going to consider losses in the NG transport system bringing NG for the CNG car, then you also have to consider losses in the NG transport system bringing NG to the electrical power plant that is generating electricity for the EV car.

You can't selectively use one criteria for a CNG car and a different, less rigorous one for evaluations of an EV car.

Here are today's CNG prices at gas stations in LA

natural gas buddy----location and price of CNG at gas stations in LA

They are about half of current gasoline prices. If you go to Oklahoma City or other areas with local NG production and better NG infrastructure, CNG prices today are about 1/3-1/4 the current price of gasoline.

Indeed, nor did I do so. The pipeline losses for a single centrally located large generating plant are much much lower than the pipeline losses for millions of individual homes and thousands of filling stations, (which don't exist by the way). There are also no secondary compression losses for EV's as the gas doesn't need to fit into a vehicle tank at high pressure, which is a large source of energy loss for CNG vehicles, to the tune of over 12kwh's for every fill up. That's 50 miles of EV range wasted each time a CNG car fills up with 180 miles of range.

Hi Solar:

Amazingly, you completely missed the point of the data, the DOE paper I linked to, and the topic of this whole thread. None of this has anything to do with the efficiency of a "typical single-passenger gasoline car" you are talking about.

This topic is about natural gas cars. The reason that the DOE report I linked to contains effciency numbers higher than those for typical gasoline cars in modified engines is because CNG cars are more efficient than typical ICE gasoline cars after the engine is modified to optimize the use of natural gas. The octane content of NG is much higher than the octane of gasoline making the whole engine much more efficient.

If you don't know about CNG vehicles, I suggest you check it out---AGAIN, if you want to talk about "typical gasoline cars" you are in the wrong thread---this is a discussion vehicles fueled by NATURAL GAS.
Yes, and the links I previously provided show the Honda CNG vehicle getting between 26-32mpg in actual use, mildly efficient for an ICE, and no where near the numbers you are claiming.
If you don't know about CNG vehicles, I suggest you check it out.

Todays price of CNG is quoted for gas stations across the USA. If you want to fantasize about mining gas on Saturn you go right ahead but please don't waste our time here with such silliness

THis is is the kind of thing that can help CNG cars gain attention and build momentum as a viable and practical alternative to gasoline cars. Now that gas prices are going up, CNG cars are looking more and more attractive.

At least with the Volt you can plug it in/fill it up almost anywhere, unlike CNG vehicles.

It is written that CNG gas pumps will be added at existing gas stations ... one by one, slowly, first here, then there. Than more. Then many more. Finally like a great wave.
