Think about the 47 million people that are on Snap this year:

To say the least challenges lie ahead. Welfare states, good or bad, require appropriate demographics and working economies. The western world now has neither. Expanded spending, like Krugman might recommend, only works if you can recoup the spending in an economic upswing in the future, not likely to happen now post peak oil, or at he least as long as oil prices remain high. Austerity, powerdown, whatever, a rose smells the same regardless of the name.

like I said, if a couple people had hoarded most of the nations zinc, copper, or tin, we would consider it a threat to our national security. Letting them hoard all the money just draws bovine looks of feigned ignorance.

Uncle Sucker spends about $65 billion a year on SNAP (food stamps).

In comparison, the top ten fedgov contractors (mostly military) get more than $71 billion a year---Lockheed Martin alone bilks taxpayers for nearly $17 billion a year, Northrop Grumman for more than $11 billion, Boeing for more than $10 billion.

Yet we never hear Cog (deleted) bitch and moan about the CEO of Lockheed Martin or other millionaire mooches....

Lockheed Martin? What will America be without submarine missiles? Sure, I bet they overcharge taxpayers by way, way more than $10-20 million they spend on lobbying every year, but at the very least they ARE doing something productive ( or constructively destructive, if you want to put it this way )

Calm yourself Loki. I don't want you to stroke out over wealth inequality.

I'm sure somewhere in the world, someone is making a ton of money that is going untaxed right now. Be a hero and go search them out and distribute their largess to the masses.

As for mooches, what do they produce aside of humanure?

I wouldn't consider anything Lockheed Martin does "productive." On the contrary. But apparently mooching on a big enough scale is not only acceptable, but downright admirable.

As AgentR11 says, SNAP is a cheap insurance program to ensure social stability. It's far more useful and productive than anything any "defense" contractor does. And the great majority of SNAP dollars are circulated locally and used to buy US-grown products.

I do find Shaved_Monkey's charts disturbing, though, I knew there was a notable increase in people getting food stamps, but didn't know it was this significant. Stuff like this shows how bad the Great Recession has become, but instead of the breadlines of the 1930s we get "Oregon Trail" cards (what food stamps are called here in Oregon).

You know Cog..

It's ironic that after 30 odd years of your ideology in practice, supposedly anti-communist, now has us to a point where so many are impoverished that we're going to wind up with de facto communism -- government feeding the people, government bailing out homeowners, government healthcare, all because the people are too damn poor participate in the market economy after two generations of your Reaganomics crap.

Your side has driven this country to the very thing you claim to oppose.

I see.

So we need more welfare state to prevent more welfare state? Sometimes your illogically formed statements defy any effort to unscramble them.

Hmm which do I choose A or B?

Taking from the rich and giving to the poor doesn't work, won't work, and shouldn't be done even if it did work.
