You know, I'm wondering if the political near homogeneity of this site's participants is necessarily a good thing. It seems to me that as this community matures, it should start to move towards the center of the traditional political spectrum through the participation of people of many ideologies. I mean, obviously, I believe we bottom lefties are correct about everything but we will have greater diversity of thought, more interesting new ideas, and more vibrant dialogue if we welcome opposing viewpoints.

As peak oil moves more into the mainstream, we'll likely see more people who aren't in the traditional audience for such stuff. I think as a very broad generalization, people in the bottom left of this spectrum tend to be most familiar with ecological ideas such as carrying capacity. Because of this, we may want to think about ways of framing ecological ideas in language that is more accessible to those folks outside of the bottom left quadrant.

Also, we might want to think about the way we treat dissenting voices in general. I'm not talking about the typical newbie who walks in here and starts making absurd claims. I'm talking about people who have done all of the reading and for whatever reason, still disagree with the majority here. There are very few of these people. I firmly believe that even if most of us disagree with them vehemently, engaging with them in rational dialogue will make our understanding of the issues more complete.

On a more general note, I've been thinking lately about the disconnect between the stereotypical ecologist's view of the world and that of the stereotypical engineer. To sum up briefly, the engineer views the world as a set of problems to be solved, whereas the ecologist views the world as a holistic system. Each side has something to learn from the other.

Close enough to Gandhi, though the Dalai Lama's a bit away from me. I like the idea of being closer to Libertarian than Authoritarian, but not TOO close! Of course, Left is right! **hee hee**
