$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')umanity is close to breaching the sustainability of Earth, and needs a technological revolution greater – and faster – than the industrial revolution to avoid “a major planetary catastrophe,” according to a new United Nations report.

Tecnological revolution, no thanks. See where's that'g got us already? Gadgets everywhere, nature no-where. No thanks.

We need a revolution in devolution, me thinks :-D

I wish them good luck with that.

Who would want to pay UN dues if they admit we're done.

Gas, I understand that the "UN will take over the world" thing is part of the conservative narrative, but I think we answered that pretty forcefully when we refused to ratify Kyoto as well as the ICC. In addition, we have a permanent veto over anything the UN might seek to *DO* without our consent. For the US, its a great place to let powerless nations babble endlessly and make themselves feel heard. That's not a horrible thing.

The only power they have in the US is to avoid paying parking tickets.
I think I can live with that.

Yes, you're a Gas, all right :-D regurgitating free-market libertarianism as the cure for all when it is practically the cause of all this. Greed, lubricated, is not the answer, unless we all blow ourselves up fighting for the last resources available.

Sorry Gas, I have to agree with Pstarr. The UN is no military threat to the US, they're not a military threat even when they deploy. They might be an administrative/ governmental threat to the US. Well they might have been in the past, maybe even the first year of the Obama administration. But he has inadvertantly made sure that will not happen anytime soon. Their biggest power over the US was control of global warming, as as Agent states, canning Kyoto (Democratic Senate at that) negates any power. And the global warming faith seems in decline at present.

As my post alludes, we now know clearly that "liberal academics" can't run a government. I like to look at the bright side Gas, I'm not sure who runs the world, but I get to laugh at the "liberal academics and swarthy 3rd-Worlders " when they try.

Kind of amusing that the UN is sounding like many of the posters on here. Not much of a revelation to those who look a little farther then the next corporate quarter.
The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '')Technological transformation, greater in scale and achievable within a much shorter time frame than the first industrial revolution, is required,” it says. “The necessary set of new technologies must enable today’s poor to attain decent living standards, while reducing emissions and waste and ending the unrestrained drawdown of the Earth’s non-renewable resources.”

I can make fun of the report, but there is a kernel of truth in it. This new technology EXISTS! We just have to make use of it. It's called 'Organic Farming'. Get use to it people, especially the third world. Growing crops for exports using fertilizer and monocrop machines is going to be passe.
