$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pops', 'N')ow now, this is a family show.

Otherwise I agree. I cant for the life of me figure out why there aren't thousands of small clinics and "prompt care" with GPs and NPs attached to ERs and stuck in strip malls everywhere.

Pops,
Actually, there are. We lived in Boise for about 7 months in 2009. The Rite Aid drug store about a mile from our place had a 24/7 urgent care clinic attached. These urgent care clinics ("doc in a box clinics" as they are often called) are all over the Pacific Northwest.

I have been recruited a few times to go work at such places outside the Pacific Northwest (not interested in leaving these parts) -- but maybe there aren't any near where you live. 8O

Australian Citizen, no need to waste time thinking about this.
I am also a US Citizen and this is one of the major reasons I would never choose to live in the US again
In the Philippines a good family cover costs me $30 a month.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Lumpy', ' ')Fiddler, I am SO happy for you that you have been able to get the help you needed :)
Unfortunately, things like NO POLICY LIMIT mean that more 'money' is being created out of thin air.

Thank you for your kind sentiments.

Agent R11 puts the situation very well. I myself went from a series of very expensive crises (which the system will have to pay for) to a planned care system, to which I do contribute nearly $10,000/yr, along with the ability to keep working and paying taxes.

But is is only a matter of some luck that I could keep getting medications that reduced the risk of me having a stroke or other problems that could have me permanently disabled in a Medicaid bed, and requiring HUGE sums in care until a miserable death.

For people like hemophiliacs and brain damage cases, people who regularly run over the usual 2 million dollar limits on policies, their situations tke exactly that road. No EXTRA money is spent to provide rational coverage, we just plan it.

BTW, ALL insurance policies are going to unlimited in the coming year. People really have no idea how even less-than-catastrophic injuries or sick babies can cost millions of dollars in care very quickly.

Almost none of us are exempt. Even those god-like people like Cog can go from "self-reliant goliath" to "leech on the taxpayers" in the blink of a drunk driver's eye.

As an Australian friend said. if he is traveling in Australia and gets sick, he can leave his hotel and tell a cab driver to take him to the nearest doctor, who he will see after short wait.

If an American heard that, you would smell burning insulation as their brain tries to process this inconceivable chain of events.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Lumpy', '
')In May, 2009, our self-paid insurance premium was about $840/month. We have not developed any new illnesses, etc, since then. For the SAME coverage now with the SAME company at a DISCOUNTED rate (because of where we buy our car/homeowner's insurance) the cost is $2041.00/month!!!!!!

Have full cover for me and the family (Three kids).

Includes dental (Great when all three kids had braces) eyes, physio (Great with three kids playing sport) and everything else I can think of.

I dont have Hospital cover as I cancelled it recently when it went up to $120 per month. Dont really need it here as hospitals here are free and very good.

So the cover I have now costs $76 per month.
There never was much hope. Just a fool's hope.

I'm Australian so I'm covered including subsidised prescriptions.
When we travel we are covered in a few first world countries, through reciprocal agreements except the US where we have to have private insurance.http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/pub ... /index.jsp

Being remote we also get free Physio, had a massage for sore shoulder a few days ago might go again next week too.
We pay a levy on our electricity bill for Ambulance in Queensland too.
So if you need to go by ambulance or helicopter to hospital that's free too.

There will be considerable violence and bad will expressed by the lower end of the economic spectrum as things unwind in the good old USA. Weaving and dodging the chaos resulting in a breakdown of society should provide an interesting challenge.

It sure will, still you did not confirm your status-- are you a leech, an aspiring leech, or a devoted donor? You seem to be too snarky to be a devoted donor, and there are no other options.

Well, do you aspire to take back what was taken from you and given to those who deserve neither your time or consideration? If so, you are an aspiring leech, since you have no idea how much of your taxes and fees were spent in that direction, and you have no idea at what point of your hospital stay this number will be recuperated. If you suffer a car accident, will you go to the hospital? When you will get cancer ( note that I said when, not if) will you go to the doctor or a Jesus Christ peddler?

Lumpy, I'm on the GOP health plan for poor folks: Don't get sick, and if you do, die quickly.

I have zero health insurance, lost it at end of 2009 when laid off from previous job. I'm covered by workers comp, but that's it. I'm fairly risk averse while not at work. Some of my work can be somewhat dangerous, though (lots of truck and tractor driving, lots of knife work, ladders, etc.).

I looked at $100-$200/mo insurance plans and they seemed like a ridiculous waste of what little money I have (farmhands don't exactly rake it in). Obamacare may be less bad when (if?) it actually kicks in sometime in the distant future.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Lumpy', 'A')nyway, I believe that the upcoming years ... not distant future ... are going recast me in the role of "Lumpy, Kindred Creek Valley Medicine Woman."

Funny, I always assumed you were male for some reason, no idea why. Are you an MD?

In my experience it is cheaper getting quotes online. Some of the top insurance companies offer discounts when ordering online, because it is less work for them. But to be safe you could compare rates online, pick the best offer and try a local agency to see if they can match it or do better: http://www.quotes-center.com/average-cost-of-health-insurance

ACkkkkkkkk .... already did, VM. My well-founded caution/paranoia did not kick in soon enough

Seriously, I wish I would not have done it now ... but it's done.

Still looking at options. Not too excited about any of them. Looks like I will probably go with an indemnity plan for 6 months -- it's not 'real' insurance. It's a deal where they pay me "x" dollars when I send them proof of a doctor's visit, etc.

Then after 6 months we'd qualify for the PCIP.

Just tore the cartilage in my knee (farm accident.) Surgery required. (I have a copy of the MRI .. there's no question about it.) Glad that will be done before the insurance runs out!

We are also maxing out our dental and vision benefits, and stocking up on some prescription meds ... while we still have the coverage.

Loki ... you thought I was a man? That's funny :P I often have referred to my husband here ... but maybe you weren't in on those threads.

Yes, in answer to your question, I practice medicine. Rural psychiatry, actually, which meant okay money until 2.5 years ago -- and virtually no money now. I am sure my practice from the farm will be much more of a general practice in the future.

Will evaluate that after I am done being "laid up" from the surgery -- about the 1st week of September. Just in time to help with the harvest/canning/freezing, etc!

I'm in my early 50's. My personal coverage just went up about 25% to $490ish a month. Good coverage, but with a $2500 deductible.

I suppose Obamacare is already kicking in to screw up my rates, as this raise is higher than in the past.

So, I guess I now call in to see what raising my deductible to $10,000 or 20,000 will do to my rate, assuming they will allow me to do that.

On thing I really hate about Obamacare is the mandatory NO LIMIT provision on coverage. I'm sure that's part of the expense forcing the rate rise. But of course, Obamacare offers no choices, as his administration knows better than all the individuals what all their coverage choices should be.
Given the track record of the perma-doomer blogs, I wouldn't bet a fast crash doomer's money on their predictions.

Having an upper limit on insurance policies simply rolls the liability for extreme medical care from the individual to the taxpayer.

A top limit hides the risks and raises overall costs to society, a kind of invisible, extremely-inefficient socialism that conservatives seem to love and count on when they are gambling on not having health insurance, because when people go over their limit, they simply end up on the government insurance, once they have lost everything they own and quit working to have no income to qualify.

It is insanity to operate a country like this. Obamacare makes sense.
